My friend once had a backyard mechanic rebuilt his 454ci chebby engine for his c10 "a little past stock specs".

Ended up being unable to run on pump gas, constantly over heated and blew in 1,000km. that was $4,000 down the tubes. No warranty.

OP's story

>new g/f has a borken starter for her Ranger Clone.
>gets quotes from shops,repair price of $400 with parts and labor
>balk, help her find a cheap ebay starter for $60, tell her i'll install it for dinner
>ferd makes it so easy it's hard
>get old one out after fiddling for an hour, about to install new one
>g/fs roommates car had dead battery, I sez "hey i need a break anyway, let me swing my truck around and jump you".
>get out from under truck, was right behind front drivers side wheel
>go to wash hands in g/fs apartment
>make it halfway across road
>a wild magnitude 6.5 earthquake appears
>cracks the road i'm walking across
>throws the Ranger I was just under less than 30 seconds ago off the jack stands
>vehicle jumps back and forth about a meter twice
>mfw I would have been crushed
>stand shocked for a while listening to car alarms and sirens go off in the distance

>wash hands, clean kitchen food explosion

>Ranger is g/fs DD, have to fix

>had g/f stand next to me so if aftershock happened she could help pull me out faster

Also that's not a shade tree mechanic, that's a normal mechanic. Shade trees are more along the lines of your buddy who will help you install the parts you bought for beer and a pizza

Nah he's just a cool guy. He doesn't give me beer and pizza exactly, he'll just offer a drink or snack as a good host and sometimes we wrench on my HEEP.

I have no idea what I could bring. He can't and doesn't drink and they try to eat healthy so no chips. I've bought lunch a few times and helped him on other projects though.

Yeah I helped with his fence and putting in some flooring for this weird house on a trailer thing he's making.

He's not that bad anon, they just try to not eat shit tons of processed food and have good fruit/vegetable intake.
