they made an evo 9 without the AYC, a 5 speed and a spartan interior, which was priced like the WRX

What bothers me most about them is:

Mitsubishi pricing them $3000-5000 less than a Evo X when they were new (they were seriously $27-29k when they were new)

DCT Auto only knowing damn well they could use the 5 speed from the Evos just fine, and that most people bought their direct competitor (WRX) with manuals

Shittiest possible all seasons in a $27-29k car so it handled like ass in every road test

Charging $27-29k (LITERALLY the same money as a WRX which was quicker and had a solid reputation behind it, and $5000-7000 more than the Mazdaspeed 3/Focus ST)

237hp in a 3460lb car. C'mon. Seriously? I know the Evos are making 60hp more but it really wouldn't hurt to give it another 20hp.

If they priced it more realistically ($23-26k), gave it a manual option, and gave it a little more power it would've done way way better. The Lancer Sportback was a neat little car. Mitsubishi thinks they can charge Honda/Toyota/Subaru prices forgetting that they were successful during the 1990s being the cheapest Japanese cars with the trademark 1990s Japanese build quality and having tons of tech features. They also should've scrapped the 3KGT VR4 around 1996 and replaced it with the Evo IV for America (which would've been way cheaper than the VR4s, they were equivalent to $26-29k cars in Japan vs the VR4s costing double that), but that's another story.

Dunno a lot about mistu personally but I think Subaru has a serious hard on for parts cross-compatibility. For good reason because I'm sure it saves money.

The motor is another story. Ej was relatively unchanged for almost 15 years minus when it went semi closed. I can't really say they just kept it because it worked because it really didn't work well.

2-3 if you want a light 2500-2600lb tin can with AWD and parts interchangeability with DSMs

4 if you want the cheapest one out there

5-6 if you want the fastest one period from the factory, they got brembos that year

6,5 TME if you want the most collectable and coolest looking one

7-8 has the best build quality/interior, also stronger diffs/transfer case and better head

i'd get a gf8 wrx sti wagon or a evo 6 tme.

I remember someone mentioning how Mitsubishi wants to exit the NA market, but they can't just leave due to dealer contracts, so they're simply offering shit selection as a disincentive for dealers to continue working with them. Mitsubishi makes good cars, they know how, they have the resources, they're just not bringing them to the NA market.

That's not true, but it might as well be. The dealer network is pure SHIT in North America. MMNA has no idea what the fuck they are doing, it seems. I wouldn't be surprised if they were largely responsible for the lack of Mitsubishi vehicles in the US.
