No one does this. An overdrive gear is any gear that turns the input shaft slower than the output. If you have, say, a 6 speed automatic transmission and the last 2 gears are overdrive gears, pressing the 'O/D off' button will disable them. This is usually used to aid in towing or climbing steep grades on the highway.

The only time it is acceptable to call it an x speed plus is when talking about a divorced OD unit, or when talking about about GM 4 speed OD transmissions (which is what they were called by the company themselves). Technically, anything that falls below a 1:1 ratio on the output and input shaft is an overdrive gear. The term roots itself from direct drive transmissions that used a rear axle ratio to determine top speed and acceleration. When 4 and 5 speed automatics hit the scene, as well as most 5 speed manuals, 3rd was the direct drive gear and 4th was a numerical lower ratio that allowed people to reach speeds 'over drive'. On a 5 and most six speed automatics, 4th gear is your direct drive gear or close to. Anything above technically can be referred to as overdrive. Overdrive is when the driven gear turns more than one turn in relation to the drive gear. So any gear ratio higher than 1:1 is an overdrive.

Some automatics do have an overdrive gear and most manual transmissions have one or two overdrive gears.

I'm appealing to no one. You say "throwing them under the bus", but I say, "being honest". Most people I know don't know shit about cars. I'm talking almost nothing other than start, PRND, gas, brake and how to control comfort features. It's no wonder mechanics/technicians make a killing. People are so ignorant about cars that are afraid to change an air filter or check their own tire pressure if their precious TPMS light comes on.

There should be some basic car knowledge required before getting a license. At least safety related things like proper tire inflation, how to know if brakes and tires are bad (not saying how to change them, but at least know when they need to be) or how to change bulbs. Our knowledge test can be so useful, but it's just fuckeasy road sign memorization and obvious road behaviour. And it it's "supported" by a waste of time road test that doesn't teac any real-world skills that make them better, safer drivers. Instead it tests a small handful of basic maneuvers at low speeds in an often enclosed environment, such as a parking lot.

I'm not implying this is a USA only issue, but I can only speak for this country since this is where I live. People need to be education about vehicles.
