my dad was really into cars and it was nice being able to ask him about a model i couldn't identify and knew nothing about.

i was lucky that i had 30 years with him

that was the closest i got to a father son project

>>14097877

>Not into cars and DIY while younger.
>Father is but doesn't really goad me about it.
>Get into motorcycling.
>Suddenly interested in mechanics and by extension, cars.
>Start learning from father and independently.
>No major projects, just maintenance and repairs.
>Eventually replace his heater core and reassemble a clutch he had no time to put back together.
>He literally looks at me like "son I am proud" and hugs me.

You missed out, anon. Thanks for making me appreciate.

>dad drives automatic econoboxes, has no mechanical skills and can barely operate a ratchet
>will never have the chance to do a father son project car with him

Just be proud of yourself for doing it without his help.

My grandfather was the same to my father.

He mostly bought and worked on project cars to spite him though.

>be me, 18, senior year of HS working fulltime. Have 8k saved, easy while living with mama

>be my dad, hotrodder for life divorced from mom since i was 4, and has the tools, know how and ample garage space
>ask dad if he would help me with the riv
"how much will it cost?"
"Only your time ive got enough money from work easy."
"I dont have the time for you and I dont want your unfinished shit in my garage."
>put the car for sale next day, still haven't spoken to my dad.
>that was the straw thar broke the camels back
>in my 30s now, still dont have a rod
>>
>>14097778
Know the feels. My dad died when I was younger. At 22 my father, mother and all my grandparents were dead. Most I got to do was resurrect an old ct70 we found in the house he bought.
>>
>working on a project with dad
>record old racing stories he tells me on my phone
>best days of my life are spent doing mundane shit like changing headlights or brake pads with him
>build huge sentimental bond with car
>will sleep in car if it means keeping it if I somehow get superfucked
>Tfw some teenage girl texting in her super crossover could plow my car off its frame and its life on the road after 40 years will be over just like that.
>>
>>14098542

I know these feels all too well.

>weeb meme tofu car
>Old man hates it at first
>Have a drive with him, he has fun
>We bond over it, having plans to take it to the track, hoon it in the summer
>I absolutely love this car

>Notice tons of tailgating accident victims, their rears are all mangled the fuck up
>stupid motherfuckers running red lights
>Someday, godforbid, someone's going to fucking tbone my fucking shit
>>
>>14098338

You don't need that cunt in your life.

Let him die alone.
>>
Here to give y'all support. Positive thoughts and vibes being sent your way, senpai.

>At 22 my father, mother and all my grandparents were dead
You should buy a Lincoln MkII or a GM F-Body and build the batmobile.
>>
>dad is only into boomer cars
send help
>>
>>14097778
>Biological father dead (it's a good thing)
>step father is a literal cuck
>drives a nissan qashqai

Fucking hell senpai. I was born into a family of normies that think motoring begins and ends with Top Gear.

JUST FUCK MY SHIT UP SENPAI.

But there is hope
>boss has got a Ferrari Testarossa
>actually uses it too

There is hope

>last week a guy turned up in a Monaro VXR

It's tough but learn what you can and try to relate that to cars you like.
If he's a true car guy like my dad was he'll find it neat.

Best of wishes anons.
This thread makes me want to share a garage that we can all hang out at and wrench

Here's a somewhat positive story.
>live in Jacksonville, FL aka the land of 0 car culture
>dad doesn't really care about cars, but will still talk to me about them
>drives a manual protege 5, and taught me on that
>want to have a project with him, but no money or time
>both of my uncles live in Louisiana
>they're both mechanics, and want to work on a project with me
>heading there right now to tear down an Abarth 800 and a Giulietta Spider with them
>good feels

>>14099694
It was really hard at first. It has been years and I still get weepy when someone's father dies in a movie, there is a heartfelt moment between a dad and his son or if cats in the cradle comes on the radio. my mom died when I was 5 so it doesn't really affect me but with it being just me and my dad for 17 years it was like losing both parents. I am now sad this was stupid to bring up
>>

My father had a nasty 5.0 gt foxbody, fiero, and a lifted 60's Ford pickup on 35" tires. Never once saw him wrench on his own stuff or do maintenance.
Hear endless stories about fixing stuff in the driveway, transmission swaps, engine swaps, building trucks and cars with his brother
Every car starts falling apart and eventually being sold off. First it was the fiero. Then the mustang motor died and he gave it back to the previous owner. Previous owner was almost in tears at the state of his once love
The truck disappeared one day and I found it sitting behind a warehouse in an industrial complex. Trim was falling off and the tires were going flat. Never got the story of why or what happened

Now he won't touch any liquids that go into or come out of a car because of "my allergies" and he bums rides with his 80 year old mothers dying pos rav4

Why the fuck are there random bolts missing? Why is this not connected to anything?
Why did you waste so much time painting this thing and never clear coat it.

> Granddad died years back
> Still have the truck he bought new in the 70's
> Grew up riding around in it while parents worked and stuff
> Store it in the garage at what was his house, we rent the house out sometimes
> Changing the thermostat in the truck because it doesn't seem to be working
> Won't stop leaking
> Seriously Won't. Stop. Leaking.

>Parents hate the idea of driving
>Dad was never into auto enthusiasm, treats it with the 'A to B' mentality
>Maternal Grandfather drove a Notchback Mustang and a Chevelle in his youth, but now trades in his Lexus every five years for a new one, has no interest in driving
>Paternal Grandfather did his own maintenance, and claimed he wanted to wrench on his own sports car once he retired. He died about a decade ago and I now drive his shitbox
>Even saving my money now, it'll probably be at least five years until I can afford anything remotely sporty
>Friend's parents buy him an '03 G35 coupe
>They bought it through Craigslist and half-assed inspecting it, so it's much more beat up than they thought
>Get together with him, work on repainting the wheels, polishing the lights, and detailing the interior with him since it's the closest thing I'll get to funbox ownership

Guess it could be worse.
