if you mean that we are "dragging the car" and ruining its value i could understand but this car has been like this since the early 70s, since buying the car my dad has contacted a previous owner who he raced last year coincidentally and the guy who did the alterations to the car in 1971 to make it drag worthy, in this photo it has a straight 6!!, This car has quite the racing history in bc and has even been down to california, and my dad has taken into his care this piece of history and is giving it a powerplant that is deserves, nothingn crazy over the top but something to make an appearance at the track with and to show that the car is still racing after all this time, so yea you could say "way to shit on a classic" or you could not be an asshole and maybe ask a question or two before you try to voice your useless opinion that noone cares for, go be negative in some other thread not this one

A muffler right after the y would kill any exhaust scavenging from that merge.

And the extra volume before the muff helps dampen the exhaust pulses before they exit the car.

Many side exhaust street cars are laid out like that. TA challengers for one.

I never understand this either. I have a cam and valvetrain and headers 5.3 Vortec that is otherwise stock that makes 445 hp with a street cam. One of my buddies built a 383 SBC with almost nearly every part except the block being aftermarket (rotating assembly, cam, aluminum heads intake, Holley EFI). The cam is pretty mild (he's probably giving up maybe 20-25 hp compared to mine) but his engine makes just a bit more at 455 hp. He's spend around $5k with all the parts and machine work. I spent $400 for the complete 5.3 with ECU. About $2k on the refresh with the cam, headers, tune and everything needed to drop it in which was just engine mounts and an electric fuel pump.

>>
>>14079552
What's it going into?
>>
>>14082089

Yeah. Stock Vortec cylinder heads are much better than every regular factory SBC cylinder heads. Many stock LSx cylinder heads are as good or better than max effort aftermarket SBC cylinder heads. You have to go with a full race SBC piece to get a better cylinder head than a stock LS3 or LS7 unit.
>>
>>14082089

He makes 10 more hp from a considerably heavier engine that only retains a production block. And he spent more than twice as much on it (and the $5k I noted earlier doesn't include the price of all the parts he reused and the initial purchase price of the running engine which was around $500 back in the 90s). I made a bit less power for $2.4k, and I have way more power potential and upgrades available. He's stuck with an cast iron block SBC and his overpriced TBI EFI.
>>
>>14082363

Well, actually weight is basically a wash with my block being a bit heavier, but most of my components like the intake being lighter. But either way. $5k+ for 10 hp versus $2.4k stock but for cam/valvetrain/headers.
>>
>>14082383

I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about. The Holley EFI makes more power at every RPM than a 600-650 cfm carb that is appropriate for his application. He wanted turn key reliability and actually drives the truck off road and in the winter where the EFI wins hands down. Sure he could probably pick up a few HP at the top of the RPM range beyond where the engine operates with a stupid mismatched Dominator or something. Either way take the Holley EFI out and it's still $4k+ spent. Once you go EFI you won't want to go with a carb since EFI is superior in every way except cost.
>>
>>14079662
OHC is older than OHV

OHV has advantages in simplicity of maintenance and lower size and weight relative to displacement

OHC gives manufacturers more control over engine design

I'm not saying one is better than the other. I'm building a 350 myself. But your buddy going 5k must have meant he went REALLY nice forged stuff. If EFI were 1K cheap, a lot more guys would do it.

Fuel injection is superior in every way except maybe cost.

Anyone who disagrees is ill-informed or stuck in the past.

Fuel injection makes more power more efficiently and is way more reliable through varying conditions and altitudes.

Seriously I'm trying to think of how you spend 5K on a gen 1 SBC. ~40% of his cost besides the EFI must have been the heads.
>>
>really want an aluminum Dart/Bill Mitchell 302 based block
>$4600 for the bare block
>>
>>14082815
>>14082835

The Holley Sniper kit can be had for about $1k or less depending on the sale or vendor. A good carb can cost $500-750. There are high performance carbs that give you as close to the custom to the engine similarity of EFI that cost $1k to 2.5k.

Just the rotating assembly was $1,500. The heads were $1,200 and then another $1,200 for the valvetrain including cam, lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, and valve springs. Intake is $250. EFI is $1k. Machine work is close to $500. Then you've got other parts like valve covers, oil pump, fuel pump, water pump, timing chain, front cover, oil pan, headers, brackets, alternator, power steering pump, all the bearings, gaskets, and fasteners.

It's called not using Chinese junk you can buy off eBay or anything stock other than the block.
>>
>>14082978
ASSEMBLED vortec heads are ~600 for the pair from Chevy Performance. Read up and you'll see you can't get much better than those without doubling your cost.
>>
>>14082979

He's running AFR 185s. The rotating assembly you posted is cast. He's running a nodular steel crank, forged pistons and rods in case he wants to shoot a bit of nitrous in there. He built the engine to be a reliable underworked engine that's overbuilt so it will go 200k no problem.

>>14082991

Vortec heads are cast iron. Gross.

>>14082975

Go for it. It's just power. I had to do the same. When you can get the strong aluminum blocks for so cheap you've really got to be up against some rule set to go with an odd ball aluminum block.
>>
>>14081849
well if you see Catch 22 next summer come say hi, wel live over in south delta so its a good hour and a bit to get out there, do you have a car you race?
>>
>>14083006
>you've really got to be up against some rule set
I'm going to vintage race my car, I'm not supposed to use an aluminum block either but it's well hidden enough due to the shock towers and headers that I don't think the scrutineers would notice as long as I painted it. Have to stay with a 289/302 block no matter what though, can't do a 351 block either, those in aluminum are a bit cheaper.
>>
>>14082991

Vortecs are a fantastic street cylinder head. Probably the best hands down for a street SBC in cast iron. He wanted to run aluminum heads though and if you don't want Chinese cast junk you're looking at $1k-1.5k for a pair. No Pro Comps or parts store brands used period.
>>
>>14083030

Be sure to post your car. It sounds neat, but I mainly want to see it so I can have the event scrutineers throw a simple magnet test at you.

The organization I plan on racing in isn't very strict, I don't think they would check or care. They do have you take your valve covers off sometimes though so it would be a pretty weird build, aluminum block, iron heads, stamped rockers. Here's an actual racing Comet that did the East African Safari in 1964, this is what mine would have to look like (Holman Moody intake and Carter 750 are listed on the homologation papers)
>>
>>14083030

Ha good luck. If there's anything I've seen in my brief foray into motorsports is that everyone is either a crybaby, neckbeard, or douche, or some combination thereof. There are butthurt people that protest cars all the time in racing.
>>
>>14083099
this.

Some boomer will go over the car with a fine tooth comb and bitch about everything.

My car will never be that competitive anyway since I'm not going to go to 12.5:1, plus there's 427 Corvettes in the division, I'd have to drive like a madman to even have a chance at the top 5. Vintage racing is pretty laid back at least for the touring car/Trans Am crowd, most of the Dbags are in the Porsches/Ferraris/expensive vintage open wheelers
>>
>>14083134

I've only ever been to the huge Monterey race at Laguna. Those guys won't even let clones in. All of the Trans Am guys shit on anyone that doesn't race a chassis that wasn't actually raced. And even then they shit on the cars driven by the guys that weren't big names. You're either a boomer or in love with boomers because that's all boomer ruined shit.
>>
>>14083149
The Historics are way different than normal vintage racing because of it's association/timing with the rest of the Monterey events. Going to be interesting to see what happens now that the track/that event is going under different management next year.
>>
>>14083185

I hope it changes for the better, but I'm skeptical. Pretty much every major form of motorsports is currently being ruined by boomers whether as competitors, officials, owners are all of the above.
>>
>>14083149
In case you haven't noticed heart breaker is indeed a boomer cock sucker
He only cares about muh stupid historic regulations and other faggot boomer shit. He has no interest in actual competition rather only interest in prancing around the track like a prissy Bitch then go to cars and coffee afterwards

If he ever ends up building that piece of shit that is

They're ported 165's. And the block itself has 240k on it already and still looks fresh lol.
>>
>>14083208

Lol. I went to a Cars and Coffee once where they wouldn't let a CRX road race car in. Pretty funny since it would smoke a majority of the boomer mobiles there on any kind of track. It wasn't even close to being setup for drag racing and it could dip into the low 11s. With slight tweaks 10s probably weren't out of the question.

What else should I do, put an LS in it and only be able to do open track days and autocross? There are very limited options for actually being able to race.
