Honestly, it's purely because of looks. The M3 has a an aggressive body kit that completely ruins the simple and clean shape of the car IMO. Also the E30 would be more fun to drive fast, especially the 4 door, because it doesn't look fast.

The closest thing are probably American independent "supercar" builds like the Rapier or Mosler that are basically street legal racing shells on top of simple tube frames with comparatively off the shelf crate engines and chassis components.
