Looking at a 2000 Outback Sport with 80k on it tomorrow, 5 speed. What should I look out for? Should I even bother? I like the look of that gen and I'm from central NY so AWD would make winters much easier. What are some good mods to do to them by the way? Any good websites? Thanks in advance
>>
>>14072944
Subaru wagons have a problem with gas fumes leaking out of a rubber fuel line near the engine.

Also, especially at 80k, ask if the head gasket has been done.
>>
>>14072972
If it hasn't been done, how long do I have until I need to do it? How difficult is it? Should I bother still?
>>
>>14072987
You might not have to do it at any point, but Subaru engines from that time were made with some bad head gaskets. This was much more common on the 2.5l, though.

I have a 97 Outback with the 2.5 still running on the original gasket at 210k, so you might not have to replace it.

I would just check to make sure there aren't any coolant leaks and that the oil isn't filled with it, just to make sure someone isn't giving you a car that blew a head gasket at 80k

Replacing it can definitely be annoying, but you can do it without removing the engine.

They're really great cars, though, so don't let that scare you.
>>
>>14073012
Thanks for all the info man, I'm not too worried about maintenance because my father has been a mechanic for 22 years and I'm trying to learn even a percentage of what he knows and he's more than willing to help. WRX engines are only goot for 350whp. If you think about that, it's actually a lot in bhp if you factor 20% drivetrain loss. Anything over 300 is "I wonder when my engine is going to give up" territory, though.
>>
>>14072944

It's tough cos you should buy the H6 but it only came in 4speed auto in that gen.

I own a Lancaster 6 VDC 2000 and am stoked with the engine but the box is super expensive on the open road. Around town it's fucking decent. The car almost idles at the speed limit it's cool

does anyone's subaru on here actually burn a lot of oil?
>>
>>14079131
>146hp
>>
>>14086188
Most turbo cars will consume oil, especially when you start increasing the boost. This is why most people install catchcans, because blowby is unavoidable. If your car is actually BURNING oil then you have a problem.
>>
>>14086511
well i was looking at getting the forester xt brand new. and was reading they have a lawsuit for burning oil i read that it could burn a quart for every 3k miles. that doesn't seem that bad to me as i wouldnt expect it with the turbo and boxer engine having the cylinders sitting in the oil.

I love my Impreza, it's fucking awesome, except because she's old she needs lots of maintenance. They're rare as fuck now. And finding one that's in decent shape is even more rare. Mine is pretty decent (just look at the photo after I detailed her completely). But finding one with no rust or anything like that is virtually impossible.

it does make a great daily though
