Looking to buy a new car that's both fun and functional. I don't go to the track and 90% of my driving is in and around the city.

From what I've researched it comes down between the Golf R and the WRX STI. Everything I've read basically says that the STI is more "wild" and has better track potential, while the Golf R is more "mature" and refined.

I test drove a MK7 GTI that was tuned to ~300HP and really liked it. I also test drive a regular WRX with an automatic CVT (it's all the dealership had) and found it underwhelming.

I live in Canada and get a decent amount of snow during the winter. The regular GTI and WRX are also under consideration.

Any advice or alternative recommendations? I don't want a straight up sports car with no cargo room or winter drivability.
>>
According to most of the youtube videos comparing these 2 the Golf is slightly faster and the interior doesnt seem as cheap. The golf supposedly feels like a car that costs what these cost but I imagine the subaru feels a bit more fun.
>>
impreza has ugly exterior
golf has ugly interior (literally every VW/Audi/Škoda)
>>
I'd take the Golf OP

Spec it on 18s for maximum comfy with big performance
>>
FOCUS RS
>>
Out of those two though, I would get the golf.

Those things are pretty damn quick just with a tune and the interior is way nicer
>>
Mmm Yeah I'd shill for Ford too, but of the two I'd go Golf R, mkvii golf's are supposed to be great and who knows what issues the new gen subies might have (as they just came out).

Bro/st/er

I wouldn't waste my money on a 15 STi, though the 16 might be better.

Got much done to the Fiesta? Blue or White are my other favorite colors for this car.
>>
>>14069428
What's the deal with new gen sti? They're blowing up a lot or what?
>>
>>14069352
>this guy seriously thinks vw has worse interior quality than Subaru

Son are you completely retarded
>>
Focus RS, but for the money you might as well get a Mustang.

Increased Emissions and Fuel Economy Requirements in US/Europe = Tighter Piston/Wall Tolerances = Increased Ringland Breakage. That simple.

It's been happening since the 2007+ EJ257 WRX STis and still hasn't really been fixed. It also explains why it doesn't happen as much to EJ20 cars (which blow headgaskets and spins rod bearings instead) or the FA20 cars (too new)

I think spinning rod bearings and bad headgaskets might be a problem inherent to all Subaru Boxer engines. I haven't seen a engine series that doesn't have it happen at some point from them. The N/A EJ25s and EJ205s IMO were the worst. I think people just give Subaru their reputation for reliability because there's no cheap easily accessible AWD car on the market that isn't a fuckhuge SUV/Truck and because the people that buy them the most tend to be older women/men with conservative driving habits (explains why Buicks do well too).
>>
STI is shit till it gets a new engine. WRX is by far the better buy right now
>>
how is this even a question. Golf
>>
>>14069495
Looks like the 2016 STi is sticking with the EJ257 as well, so you should be considering the 16 WRX with the FA20 (though there's no confirmation that the Ringland Breakage issue is resolved on this) or the Golf R (or Focus RS).
>>
Sti is a less refined more rally based car. You will have much more fun around town in a golf R or Scirocco R.
>>
Does the Golf get a sunroof?

Get a golf senpai. I am also in Canada and bought one.
>>
>>14069301
Reviews reckon the VW is much more sensible and mature, whereas the Subaru still feels relatively old school. On those grounds, I'd have the Subaru every time.

You should test both, though.
>>
>>14069301
Used WRX STi Wagon, either GDB 01-02 or GF8 96-00

Alternatively a Legacy GTB Wagon. Fuck new cars.

i feel sorry for you burgers

I'd rather have the 5 door :x

Sounds like the Golf is a better vehicle at this point in time.

that looks like a shrinked minivan familia

The Focus and Fiesta look awful to be honest.

Ford pls, I'd probably buy one

Can someone compare the same thing, but the older models like 95-05

deffinitely golf, especially for the 2016 year.

The 2016 sti has to be one of the worst for the money.

although the sti will still keeps its price pretty well, because ricer tax is a thing
>>
>>14071486
Damnit fastestlaps, you're supposed to be ragebait, not a reasonable conclusion!
>>
>>14069301

Let me solve this really quickly for you. The golf is FWD.

You're welcome.
>>

The Golf R is AWD actually.

In older subies the 2.0 don't have the same head gasket issues that the 2.5 does. You see it mostly in 2.5 outbacks and stis.
>>
>>14069581
How is this so shiny
>>
The r is high 11 with tune and has a slick dct. Obvious choice here even over the focus rs.
>>
STI bullet proof transmission. Low rent interior. Mad fun. Forged pistons and done.

Golf R? German vas dub piece o crap
>>
>>14072549
>Low rent interior.

More like section 8 housing interior. Subaru has the worst interiors in modern history.
>>
>>14069301
Drive a Subie with a proper manual and see how you go. Dont base your choice after driving one with the most god-awful teans ever built. Also look at maintenance costs for both aswell. Golfs burn alot of oil which VW has said is acceptable (like a litre every 1000kms). Also any car you buy that has brembo brakes will cost fucktons to replace when the time comes for it (and they wear really quickly through rotors). I have owned 2 WRXs in my lifetime (a GC8 and a GDA) and both were great cars but i found it cramped if i was driving my mates around. But i was a sucker for that exhaust note with a 3inch turbo back. I used to work for a VW Audi repairer and from what i saw, Golf R's with stage 3 tunes were shitting turbos left right and center. Just buy what you like.
>>
>>14069301
I would get the regular WRX if you had to have one. The STIs have been very weak this gen.
