First gens can be had right now for less than 10K. You just have to go for the better looking coupes instead of the fastbacks, and you may have to deal with an striaght six instead of a V8. Swapping to the latter is piss easy anyways.

I always found car collecting interesting from a conceptual standpoint but it's never something I actually wanted to do because past history is always the same cycle of perpetual fail:

>guy wants car he masturbated to when he was 16
>buys it, restores it, car shows, blah blah blah

>his kids are like Nice car butmmmmmnah sorry old man

Why even bother taking up a hobby like that if you're going to eventually be too old to enjoy it? Pointless.

The secret of investing in collectibles is to literally be "into shit before it was popular" and then to get rid of it right when it's at the height of popularity i.e. right before it stops being popular (when "too many douchebags are into it")

I've already converted all my Magic cards into 80s cars and my retro video games may be next up, though I suspect they have longer legs.

You guys already fucking know which cars are going to appreciate. Go buy them right now while you still can!

We are the music makers and the dreamers of dreams

No you're not that old yet in your 60s if you take good care of yourself, but have you seen what half these guys look like (assuming you've been to an antique car show)? Massive beer guts, red-faced, can barely move, insulin shots. They're probably closer to 80 under the hood (bad joke I know).

Not everyone's Jack Lalanne, you know.
>>
>>14063470
You're likely stuck with an automatic at that 10K pricepoint, but it should still be possoble to find an autotragic V8 coupe for that kind of money without major rust issues. Or just go ahead and pick up the nicest possible auto six, and drop in a junkyard 351 with a T5 or something behind it.

My dad said he remembered in the 80s when there were a lot more 1920s-30s cars there being collected by WWII vets. Lotta flathead Fords, Packards, V16 Caddys, etc.

Well he said he go to the shows almost 20 years later and many of the same guys were still there with the same cars only now they were getting...old (like 75 and up). A lot of them could barely move and often were not able to drive their cars anymore. They must have needed help from younger friends or relatives to get to the show.
>>
>>14063470
Only searching for '70 coupes, but both of these almost qualify. Both automatic, sure, but hey, late sixties manuals weren't all that great either. At least they look rustfree, and have a 351.

https://www.carsforsale.com/vehicle/details/13321145

https://www.carsforsale.com/vehicle/details/352483

I'm sure you could find betters ones if you didn't limit yourself like I do. I'm picky and I'd really like a Grabber Orange '70 Coupe with a Mach 1-ish appearance pack.
https://www.carsforsale.com/vehicle/details/14603869
This would be perfect if it weren't for the red interior, I'd swap that for some black leather (bit keep the plaid seat inserts). After that it's just a matter of saving up for the inevitable 460 + 4 speed manual swap.

2. We had mandatory euthanasia at 70

Some hobbies are just not all there. For example antique radios were hot, hot, hot in the 80s. By Clinton's second term, as the WWII vets were all past the age of 75, it was like "Will the last person to leave the room please turn out the lights?"

Old Coronets and Falcons for for like 1,500
>>
>>14063647
There wasn't too long ago when we were in this antique mall and one stand had a 30s console radio in it. The price was about $50 and my dad remarked how 20 years earlier, that would have gone for like $500 when nostalgiafags were still alive and actively collecting them.

>I found a mint 81 El Camino for 2 grand. Would have gotten it if I had the dosh. There's also a mint looking 74 Torino in town for 5K

Anything from 1973-81 is not a classic, it's a chapter of the American automobile that we'd rather not remember.

“I once took my Pontiac G-8 out on a farm road and revved that baby up to 125 mph. Man, the telephone poles were just inches apart. I haven’t driven that fast since then,” he said.

Considering the G8 was only sold here in 08-09, he must have been like 88 when he bought the thing. Getting up to 125 mph at that age is impressive considering all the decrepit blue hairs who barely hit 30 on their way to Denny's as they can't see over the wheel.

You do not own a classic it shows. Yes my 66 is old, has a ton of wind noise, outdated suspension, and no safety gear to speak of. However, doing a burnout in it or just feeling a massive push of torque from a 7+ liter big block moving you forward in a comically long steel box is incredibly stimulating and satisfying. Also, I much prefer 60s styling to the soap bars we have today. It was an era that lent itself to grandeur for grandeur's sake. To each his own though.

When you are behind the wheel of any Detroit Steel big body of the 60's-70's you are no longer simply driving. You are navigating your personal Land Yacht. Superfluous thing such as cruise control, ABS, Traction control, or Airbags do not matter to you. What does matter is the four feet of leg room, pillow-topped seats that surround your entire body with plush comfort, the lack of a center console that allows maximum lateral freedom for you and yours, and the glimmer of the sun on the over sized hood ornament. You are the biggest thing on the road and you always have the right of way. The speed of traffic is what you decide it should be. Modern cars with "responsive" handling and packed in safety features have lost this simple creature comfort that your Classic chrome covered ride exudes.

When you are behind the wheel of a 90s shitbox you aren't driving, you're hooning. Working air conditioning, a chassis that doesn't feel like a wet macaroni noodle, interior materials that aren't cracking cheap plastic, or a differential that actually lets you go around corners without skipping one tire do not matter to you. What does matter is that you're looking out the side window when moving and the muffled eurobeat playing in the distance. You are the smallest thing on the road and you have to be on constant lookout for soccer moms in CUVs that might merge into you. The speed of traffic is irrelevant since you dart around it. Modern cars with gigantic A pillars that you can't see around, electronic parking brakes, and driver aids you can't disable that ensure you always stick to the road have lost the simple joy of hooning that your shitbox with bubbling clearcoat exudes.

I was just back on Craigslist tonight for the first time since February and I was amazed at the market for old Japanese cars in California. Back in February Toyotas, Hondas, Datsuns, and Mazda's were just a handful of cars from each company with prices around 6k for a pre 75 car.

Toyota Celica and Corolla coupes are around 4-5k now. With new ads coming up more frequent.

Honda microcars, the n600 and z600 are within 3-5k now. The z600 still being uncommon.

Datsuns have seen the most growth in price and abundance. Pre-1975 Z's are now within the 6-8k range. More 510 coupes are surfacing and will cost around 4-6k.

Mazda's were very few back in February, and only a handful are on sale as of late. RX's and Repu pick-ups will come at a steep price compared to all other Japanese manufacturers.

This, its always an event when you're driving an old car. Its a pretty good feel when someone gives you a thumbs up, you almost always make a friend wherever you go. Anyone of any agegroup can appreciate an old murican V8 muscle car.

It doesn't even have to be a show car, as long as its loud and its fucking cool. The JDMfags are missing out big time, sure Evo's Miatas and Poopra's are cool, but nothing can compare to the character/presence of an old muscle car.

My interior is 60 years old and no cracks to speak of. The 'plastic' you see here is actually closer to Bakelite. Only thin plastic is the rear deck cover and even that's think as fuck. Majority of the dash is steel and has a cloth backed padded top with no splits at all. I'd love to say I could say the same of the 90s shitboxes but most have some dash warp or crack. I agree entirely and love that GTO. There is no resaon you cannot hoon a classic. Where do people think sideways culture came from anyway? Yes the japs had the togue, but America had shine runners in the 1920s-30s that were able to powerslide ford coupes and the like. The Japanese didn't really start making the power to slide until the late 50s/ early 60s.

My sister will be coming into town and I'm trying to convince her to drive the Duster down so I can get a family pic with the Fury. My father is now looking at a new commuter and has found a 1965 Dart GT Wagon with the 225. Clean as can be and I think it would be a fun car for him.

I contend that we need to live much longer. With many of the more intricate professions by the time you're educated it's eaten significantly into your productive years. Then by the time you get some decent experience it's time to retire.

Yeh but it's kind of worthless when the human body isn't designed to last longer than 70-ish years. There's no point to living to 90 if the last 10-15 years of that is spent pooping your Depends as the Mexican nurse smacks you around the eyes.

No but the ordinary Fords and Chevys from the Depression era sunk like a rock because they were a popular item with nostalgiafags.

buy an e30 or rx7 now and hold onto it for another 15 years. sell it.
Buy a stock s14 and sell in 5 years. Buy a bmw m3 and sell in 20 years. But a bugeye sti and sell in 15 years. Buy a brz and sell in 40 years. Buy a GTO and sell in 30 years

self driving cars will do what cash for clunkers did to the used market a few years ago, but permanently.

In fact the most valueless 30s cars are ordinary boring shit like a six-cylinder Buick or Pontiac. Otherwise, contrary to what you've heard, the disappearance of nostalgiafags from that era hasn't caused the price of the stuff to go down much at all.

Not a boomer, but Honda's are hated because of the morons that generally own them. They tend to fall into 2 categories:

yes, but there's a difference between those two statements. As of right now, there a few companies actively working and testing prototypes out in the wild. Like an old time documentary on solid state transistors, that existed only in a few laboratories at the time, and how they will revolutionize humanity's technology.

>>
>>14068330

>>
>>14064915

That's actually the opposite. Living in that era I will tell you that cars were very much disposable. People drove the shit out of them 50-90k miles and then would scrap them. I saw Hemi cars and other cars that would be considered rare today get scrapped. Most racing teams back then either buried their cars after they were used up (serious Richard Petty did this for years) or they were scrapped. They didn't end up in museums commonly until much later in the 70s and 80s when nostalgia kicked in. The build quality of muscle car era junk was atrocious too. Way worse than anything British. Any decent 80s-present basic restoration can produce a better quality car than what rolled off the line. Paint was terrible, panel gaps were terrible, uniformity in body pressings was terrible, cars were basically unsafe to drive with drums on all corners, horsepower was overrated largely. Muscle cars were shit to own and drive. It's all about nostalgia.
>>

Often times those odd ball muscle era cars are picked up by budget enthusiasts. They are good starts for a project where everything is going to be modified or updated anyway so you're not ruining a period correct car. I've seen some nice looking more door resto mods, sedans/post cars.

>>
>>14068368
Yes they do. There are tons of restored 225 slant Plymouths and Dodges that have been restored. Yes, the vast majority of what is seen is V8s because 318s are a dime a dozen and easy to swap. There are actually more restored I6 Mopars in my area than there are V8s period.

Sounds like copypaste from a nostalgic boomer idiot on some forum. Yeahyeahyeah we've all heard it before. The past (or to say when I was a tot) was a time when men were men, women were women, people were kind, helpful, churchgoing, didn't ever have sex until their wedding night, cars were built to last, people didn't commit crimes or lock their doors at night.
>>
>>14068403

Yeah starting with base models is very popular in mopar since the v8 cars especially hemis and 440 cars can start at astronomical prices that some budget guys can't afford.
>>
>>14063395
>Why even bother taking up a hobby like that if you're going to eventually be too old to enjoy it? Pointless.

This is one of the most moronic things I have ever heard. Do you even think or just babble whatever pops into your mind?

If you are lucky enough to live to an old age, you will be too old to enjoy almost every one of the hobbies you had when you were younger.

What a goddamn idiot...
>>
>>14068381
All cars are unsafe to drive, regardless of the braking system. Drums work but not as well as disc, that much is true but even Pursuit package Polaras had drums. As for the horsepower, they were rated at gross horsepower not net for many many years, so the HP advertised was at the crank with no ancillary devices. As for how they are shit to own or drive, I wasn't born in the 1960s, but I prefer them to current vehicles not due to nostalgia, but sheer style and simplicity to repair. Give me a land barge any day.
>>
>>14068425

sure that's why i like them too. for the body design. but i prefer my muscle cars to essentially be a c6 z06 corvette under a muscle car body so it's actually fun to drive and carve corners safely but not in a plastic piece of shit with a cushy feel.
>>
>>14068397
Nice. With my gearing the way it is (3.55) I could hit about 127-130. 3.23s should have me around 150-160 by my calculations. It'll never be driven that fast off of a strip because of front end lift causing a very light steering feel. Live muh Sport Fury

Not the guy you were replying to, but I think you're the party who just babbles whatever pops into his head with no prior thought.
>>

But that isn't a muscle car anon. That'd be a restomod and if its a Vette underneath an older body, it's be a classic looking sports car.

that's fine. i've driven stock or lightly modified muscle cars. they're shit to drive and most are slower than a modern regular passenger car.

My dad had an 82 Charger until 1997 and he said by the early 90s it was definitely outclassed by other small sporty cars ergo how could you expect a car made in 1965 to compete with stuff made 40-50 years later.
>>
>>14068454

Obviously a child. You think that your priorities don't change as life goes on? Grow up, kid.
>>
>>14068473
I've had everything from 225-440 both stock and heavily modified. I'll take the barge over any modern family car any day. The interiors are too cramped, everything has went to fully integrated touch screens for climate control, and they all look god awful. 15k will get you a brand new, base model shitbox that is powered by a 1.5l lawnmower engine. Or you can have a fully loaded big block Imperial with more comfort and class than any one man can handle.

Underage kiddo, I worked in a nursing home one summer and most of them weren't enjoying their life at all and often told me they'd gladly end it all if it weren't for their religion.

In a straight line they can. On creature comforts (ie, extra bullshit that adds weight), fuel economy, and handling new cars win out but fuel economy doesn't concern me, anyone who cares about the mileage they get is wasting away. In this life it's not about miles per gallon anon, but smiles per mile.

Son, there's tons of stuff I can't do now that I could 20 or 30 years ago, not to mention I quite simply have no interest in some hobbies I had back then. By the logic of the halfwit I was originally responding to, I should never have gotten involved in any hobbies, any activities, or made any friends for the simple reason that I would out grow them one day or not be able too enjoy them one day.

If that is the point you are trying to back up,you area complete idiot and deserve to be a kissless virgin neckbeard that lives in his mom's basement for his entire life. It is a cop out of the lazy and the children that are too scared of life to try anything.

Nobody expects you to do everything at 65 you did at 25 but there also comes the point where you get old enough that the loss of physical ability starts impeding basic everyday life. As someone else said, about half of people by 85 need help just with normal tasks.

Had a friends 80+yo grandfather decide to check out a few months ago because of infirmities. Bad back and knee meant he couldn't get around too well and then he hurt his arm somehow and couldn't even carry beer in. Wish I would've kept it, sold it because 4 door. Stupid.

Have you measured? I couldn't even get a 255 on a 8" wheel to clear without rubbing in turns. Maybe if I rolled or cut the fender lip and hammered the inner fender.

I re keyed the torsion and used truck lowering blocks to try and fight lift at speed.

People tend to have a bit of a misunderstanding of how the human nervous system works. For instance it's commonly stated that your synapses do not fire as quickly in older individuals, however this is not true. The speed of them is not appreciably different in a 25 and 75 year old, rather the brain shrinks a bit with age and loses some neurons so with less parallel processing ability, you can't think as fast and get confused more easily due to brain overload.

275s fit snugly without relocating springs too. Just have to have 4.25" of backspace at a 0 offset. It's make me feel better if they made a 4.125 backspace but that's splitting hairs. On topic, I cannot go any wider that that tire on an 8.5" wheel, but I run 11" drag radials and still have a bit of room, may be the ballooning affect of the tire not being same size as the wheels. Have another C Body

Ok but why do cats have quicker reflexes than humans despite almost 200% fewer neurons (one billion in a cat's brain versus 60 billion in an adult man's brain)?
>>
>>14069079
There's a few reasons for that including the cat's musculoskeletal system being different from ours in a number of ways that allow faster movement and the much smaller size of their body resulting in shorter pathways for neural transmission.

Having said that, if you have pets you will notice they get confused and bothered by a lot of people in the room or action going on at once because they can't parallel process all that information like we can.

>>14069079

Cats are smaller and they get scared of fucking everything.
