Does /o/ read motorism-related literature to better themselves as drivers, be it for track days, vidya, general DD, or just for plain enjoyment or better understanding of the workings of a car?
What are some books you would recommend?
Car mags and repair/maintenance manuals and biographies/historical also welcome.

Read Driving on the edge by Michael Krum, wasnt THAT much of an eye opener, but would recommend as a present for a gearhead you know. Currently going through Ross Bentleys Speed secrets and it is much more in-depth with more and better examples, defo recommended and well worth the value IMO.
>>
I believe that driving is something best learned on your own. I could talk to someone all day about racing theory but in reality the only thing making them better is themselves and seat time.
>>
>>14061722
While it's completely possible for someone to just drive until they are amazing at it, knowing a little bit about the physics behind it gives you a massive edge when you're learning.
>>
>>14061722
I agree somewhat, natural talent and balls can't be learned. And to an extent race craft can't be learned as it becomes intuition with experience.

But, I think we underestimate how little the typical person knows about performance driving.
Even just line selection.. using the whole track.. fast in slow out.. being smooth.. things that are ingrained in you from age 5 as a karter or whatever are completely foreign to normal people.

So, I think a book could be beneficial. Just like an instructor is. But you have to practice what they teach. You can't just read it and go do it.
>>
>>14061750
>choosing a line
Makes no sense
Fuck off
>>
>>14061780
Case in point.
In real life, there isn't a nice big easy to see black line or a nice line of arrows telling you where to put your car.

In fact on a lot of tracks that see only track days, I've seen rubbered in lines for tricky corners that are actually worse due to track day heroes. Willow springs turn 3 and 4 are a good example.

but i drive a fwd understerring 63/37 SACK OF SHIIIIIIIIIIIT
>>
>>14061750
>fast in slow out
wrong
corner exit speed is paramount
>>
>>14061849
>look at me everyone i drive rwd
nobody cares
>>
>>14061855
I dont, actually.
>>
Owner's manual and service manual for whatever car I own. That's it. Anything else I can google, youtube or look up on a wiki.

UNDERSTEERING SACK OF SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT
>>
>>14061360
This book was the single best book I've ever bought. It gave me so much to think about and it helped me become the driver I am today. Although I think it needs to be updated it should be in every driving enthusiast's home
>>
Magazines in general these days are horse shit, their 80% ads targeted at retards and the rest are just pointless useless articles that act to just fill up the rest 20% - and some times even they're paid sponsorships.

Can't wait until that fucking piece of shit medium dies
>>

Corolla?

PRELUUUUUUDE
>>
>>14061780
Yes it does. Go read a book.

>>14061855
>fast in slow out
Is wrong. Go read a book. It also doesn't matter if it's RWD, AWD, or FWD.

Really enjoy this book, its something you grab every so often and read a chapter and mess around.

>>
>>14061360
Books are terrific. Though I guess anything works as long as youre brought up to speed on current techniques.
>>14061722
Seat time alone without supervision can just cultivate bad habits you'll have to break if you ever want to race competitively.
>>
>>14062100
You're wrong.
Read a fucking book, you can't do it any other way.
>>
>>14062902
Are you retarded?
Fast in slow out is a litany against carrying too much speed into a corner causing a slow (aka BAD) exit.
>>
>>14065757
this. the guy who said fast in slow out just mistyped.
>>
>>14061722

Same thing could be said about any other skill or field. Sure, you could derive string theory from scratch, but why rediscover calculus?
>>
>>14062017
Does anyone have pdf of this book?

Again WRONG. Just because your retarded ass does it doesn't make it right.
Here have a laymans explanation as to why ... And pay particularly close attention to the last paragraph.
>>
>books will make me a better driver!

people actually belive this?
>>
Carroll Smith's books on race cars are great, start with those if you want an in depth understanding of race car chassis design and tuning.

Anyone got a PDF download?
>>
>>14070903
I would go with "Race car vehicle dynamics" by Milliken.
this book is like the gold standard

and also chassis design: principles and anaylsis by the same guy if you care about fabbing
>>
>>14070861
How do I be slow in fast out
>>
>>14070890
Is this attitude why /o/s driving power level is high school tier?
>>
>>14070921
Heres an idea. READ A BOOK
>>
>>14070921
it's just what they say.
the exit of a corner is more important than the entry.

entry and mid corner you're gaining tenths.
on the straights you're gaining seconds.

you're supposed to think about corners with prioritizing exit speed.
Depending on the type of corner obv.
>>
>>14070921
Your car will be set a little bit faster(have all weight transfers done faster, so you can put your gas pedal to the floor earlier)

>>14070931
I'm sorry that was a dick move.
here have the next page with another laymans explanation.

I may bring this magazine to work tonight and scan it in. doing this with my phone sucks, and i have to use a computer to scrub the metadata
>>
>>14070973
I don't get it
>>
>>14071002
The full article does a much better job of explaining it than I could. But basically all racing techniques are focused on the acceleration at the exit like >>14070939
said.
>>
>>14061855
Fuck off shitposter. Drivetrain is irrelevant, a smooth line is a smooth line for everyone, and will also minimize under or oversteer.
>>
>>14070921
Use your fucking brakes?
>>
>>14071140
Then why does /o/ shit on ff

Professional jao drivers in one of the best handling FF, prelude SH, still under steered off the track
>>
>>14071161
/o/ shits on ff because it is an economy based setup that usually makes several compromises on performance.

Racing drivers are hired to drive cars at the limit. Saying "hurr durr they wrecked such and such car" is retarded.
