Had a fairly cool story that actually had a happy ending, thought I would share with you guys

>Be me working, we just got in a really nice 2014 Silverado LTZ Z71
>parked truck front and center in the lot so people driving on the road can see it
>later that day, I see a guy pull in driving a 75' Vette
>seriously old guy gets out of car, walks in, and I go up to talk to him
>guy saw the Z71 from the road, wants to go out and take a look at the truck
>I walk him out, unlock truck, let him get in and check it out
>he walks around the truck, opens door, gets in, turns it on
>and boom, there it is....the look, you can see it in this old man's eyes
>it's something you see very very rarely, but it's fucking magical when it happens
>it's the look of someone who has found a car he is absolutely in love with
>not a car he likes
>not a car he wants
>not a car he needs
>he found a car he loves
>old guy asks me if we can drive it, I go in, grab a plate, and we take the thing out for a spin
>I start my small talk game with the guy, ask him about his 'Vette
>he bought it new in 75, has kept it all this time, only gets it out on nice weekends
>was the car he had when he met his wife and they got married
>she died of cancer a few years back, keeps it because it reminds him of her
>get on to why he wants a truck
>worked for the rail company his entire life, always had a truck as a company vehicle, but never actually owned one himself
>says as he's gotten old he's 'always had an itch to get one, just never found the right one yet

>he gives me a small laugh and then throws in "but I think this might be the one"
>finish test drive, get back to dealership, guy gets out and walks around truck one more time
>stick a fork in it, this old guy is done, head over heels in love with this truck
>laugh and ask him if he likes it
>gives me a soul warming smile and says he would love to take it home, but doesn't know if he can afford it
>says he has a large amount of money to put down, but never really uses credit, and can't afford more than 250 a month
>tell him we will go inside and sit down, see what we can do for him
>put together his credit application, and send it out, wait to see what happens
>get call from one of the lenders
>Please_let_it_be_good_news.jpg
>lender needs to ask him some questions to confirm his ID since he uses credit so little
>he answers the questions, bank says they will get back to us in a few minutes
>still worried he is going to get kicked to a Tier III or Tier IV lender because of dusty credit history
>after a loooong ass 10 minutes, get answer back form the bank
>if he can put 18,000 down, they will approve him at 1.9%, monthly payment is 250.48
>turn to him with worried look, ask him how do-able 18K down would be for him
>guy has literal diamond like glitter in his eye
>says he has the money, will take him a while to get it, pulls out his wallet. Counts out 1000 dollars on my desk and asks if I will hold the car
>agree to hold the car for him, he says he will be back in a few hours with the down payment, wants to take the truck home that day
>go throw a sold sign in the truck, was going to go home, but I go grab a bite to eat and hang around for guy to come back with his down payment

>right on schedule, old guy rolls back up in his 75, walks in holding 4 plastic bags
>each plastic bag if full of cash
>laugh and ask guy about down payment
>says he and the wife had a rainy day fund they had been saving in for years
>before his wife died, she told him to spend it on a nice car for himself, because she knew it was his dream
>tells me he had thought about getting an SS Camaro, but 'he didn't want to make his Corvette jealous'
>we go back to the business office, and count out all the cash, sure enough, guy has 18K
>smiles again and tells me didn't even have to drain the whole fund, so god knows how much cash this old man had stashed away
>get it all sorted out, guy signs paperwork, we go out to his new truck
>guy shows me his 75' vette
>it looks showroom new, not a scratch, not a scuff, not a thing out of place
>guy asks me if I can ride up with him to U-haul place, and I agree
>we get a car hauler, and I help him load the vette on the back and get him hooked up so he can take both his cars home
>guy gets misty eyed, tells me he wishes his wife could see the truck
>he drops me back off at dealership, and watch him drive off
>felt good helping an old guy find love again

>>guy gets misty eyed, tells me he wishes his wife could see the truck

My wife and I have been tearing down a '99 Miata to feed to our '92 (the car that got her into cars). She has learned a lot through the whole process, and we are really into it really deep at the moment. She's 5 months pregnant right now, so she can't get into it as much right now, but is certainly getting involved in every way she can.

Some day, if I pulled off a seriously cool project, it would be pretty devastating if I were unable to experience it with her.

I wish his wife could've seen the truck, too.

So story number 2:

>ancient ass Ford Taurus pulls up, paint is busted, car is smoking, has all the symptoms of being beyond it's last leg
>has lift on back for wheel chair
>very old lady and middle aged lady get out of the car
>I walk out to talk to them, and see what the situation is
>in summary, the very old lady drives the Taurus, but it's beyond ready to fall apart
>very old lady needs to get a new car, middle aged lady is her daughter, in from out of town, helping her try and find a car
>very old lady has severe arthritis in her hand, really needs to find a car with a column shifter as she can't really deal with console shifter
>likes ford, is sentimentally attached to her taurus, would like to find another ford, needs something she can put her wheel chair lift on the back of
>as luck would have it, (and I am sure /o/ would approve) I have a very low mileage 08 Crown Vic I take her too
>old lady loves it
>middle aged daughter loves it
>old lady actually test drives it and loves how it drives, has no problem driving it
>now, of course comes the bad news
>old lady had no credit
>daughter is willing to co-sign but also has shit credit
>to make it even more of a great story, old lady has another daughter who lives in Georgia, who is filthy rich, that could buy the old lady a car outright, but refuses too
>tell them I will do my best, go in to see what we can do for the trade, and what we can do finance wise

Just buy a GS300 with 100k on it.

>>
>>14054608
Leasing is just renting a car and building no equity.

If you buy the car, you have an asset when you're done paying for it. Obviously it won't be worth what you paid for it 4 years from now, but it will have value.

You'll give a dealership money for the car, and pay into it like you're buying one, and then you'll have dick sweat to show for it. It's a bad idea.
>>
>>14054611
You don't have to buy anything you don't want. Get a decent credit card, use it to buy things you would have bought with cash anyway, like gas or groceries, then go home and pay it off immediately

Fuck, anything I buy online goes on 1 of 2 credit cards because of the added layer of protection they provide me on certain purchases

>>14054608
get your credit score into the 600's. get a secured credit card. In your current situation, you will be looking at 20%+ APR and with that credit, you wouldn't even qualify for a lease

>>
>>14054639
Living as an adult requires you to have credit man. You will get dick punched at every turn the farther you go into life if you don't start building credit

>>
>>14054631
Meh, no car is really that much better for winter than others, the trick is to just make sure you know how to drive RWD and make sure to buy some decent tyres.

GS300 are gud, if you're black i'd avoid things like the ES300 or RX330 because they're too niggerish, might get people thinking of you wrong by association.
Don't get caught up in thinking AWD is 'better'. All it does is help you accelerate, you still need to stop and turn at some point.
>>
>>14054645
The things is, as bullshitty as it may be, building good credit is fairly easy, and once you have it, it makes a vast number of things much easier to deal with

trying to buy a house with a credit score of 640 is a completely different experience than trying to buy one with an 820 score

The mileage is just a bad consideration if you want something inexpensive. The age thing is just a weird handicap that I don't really know why you're setting yourself with. What has changed so much from 1995 to 2005? I can get a 95 ES300 with 125k miles on craigslist about 70 miles from me, for 2 grand. That would be a hell of a get better than a younger Chevy Aveo, Cobalt, Chrysler/Dodge anything, Fiesta, etc..

not just getting a house

-getting a car loan
-getting a cell phone plan
-being able to rent an apartment
-in today's job market, being able to get a job (every single IT job I have seriously chased required a credit check, current job pulled my credit as a stipulation for employment)
-being able to get utilities like power/water/gas
-getting insurance

Soooo many different people will look at your credit for all sorts of shit you might like to do in the real world
>>
>>14054674
That's ridiculous . I don't want credit and don't want to participate, I'd rather responsibly manage my finances and I never buy enough things for my credit ever be built.
Just awful system

It's strange. My Credit Union gave me 15.4% for a loan rate for 5,000 dollars. But everytime I look online I get like 20%. Jesus christ man, I know I fucked up with my student loans but I just need wheels that has some room so I can move within a year or two if possible.

>>14054653
Lol, I don't need to worry about getting a car too niggerish. I'm black in Wisconsin, lol.

I just want a nice sedan, suv, or wagon that's gonna hold out for me during the next 3-4 years.
ES300 seems okay but I was really looking for a Subaru. What year subaru do you think I can get that's decent?

Also how do you guys feel about the shitty around the corner dealerships? I know they are sketchy but I've been looking at a few carfaxs and they seem legit.
>>
>>14054686
Or he could move to australia, where despite having universally accepted NFC cards, you look weird as fuck if you use credit, no job gives a shit and 'good credit' only helps you get car and home loans.
>>
>>14054695
Depends on the subaru and what your area is like. If you live somewhere with common slow, subarus will all hold an inherent increased value due to 'symetric awd brah'.
Like the other anon said, don't get held up on car years or kms. I personally have looked at 2x preludes in the past, 1 had 85,000kms and the other had 150,000. The 85k was a complete turd and the 150k was immaculate.

If you're not worried about image, ES300 are excellent cars. They're a more luxurious camry built to a high standard, making them some of the most reliable cars on the planet. If you're looking around $3-5k and don't want to be getting any surprised in terms of repairs, i would definitely start there.

I personally avoid smaller dealerships because it's too often they're selling cheap auction shit they've 'fixed' on the cheap for normal prices, and this can fuck you over in the future.

CU's can usually do better than main line banks. Since we are talking about it, I will repost the FICO scoring guidelines for those who might be interested:

Payment History - 35%
-The most important component of your credit score looks at whether you can be trusted to repay money that is lent to you.
-Have you paid your bills on time for each and every account on your credit report?
-If you've paid late, how late were you - 30 days, 60 days, or 90+ days?
-Have any of your accounts gone to collections?
-Do you have any charge offs, debt settlements, bankruptcies, foreclosures, suits, wage attachments, liens or judgments against you?

Amounts Owed - 30%
-The second-most important thing: how much you owe. It looks at the following factors:
-How much of your total credit have you used? Less is better, but owing a little bit can be better than owing nothing at all. Lenders want to see that if you borrow money, you are responsible and financially stable enough to pay it back.
-How much do you owe on specific types of accounts, such as a mortgage, auto loans, credit cards and installment accounts? Credit scoring software likes to see that you have a mix of different types of credit
-How much do you owe in total, and how much do you owe compared to the original amount on installment accounts?

Length of Credit History - 15%
-How many years have you been using credit for? How old is your oldest account, and what is the average age of all your accounts?

New Credit - 10%
-Your score considers how many new accounts you have. It looks at how many new accounts you have applied for recently and when the last time you opened a new account was.
-If you've opened several new accounts recently, you could be a greater credit risk

Types of Credit In Use - 10%
The final factor is whether you have a mix of different types of credit, such as credit cards, store accounts, installment loans and mortgages. It also looks at how many total accounts you have.

With certain types of credit, like ar or home loans, you do have a window (which varies by state) where you can pull as many inquires as you want without it hitting you credit multiple times

You don't want to pull multiple types of credit in a short period of time, or send in applications to like a dozen different credit cards

I cannot stand when kids on here make fun of other young kids for getting loans. It just shows you that that kid is daddys little richboi cocksucker. I fucking rage to be honest. Good credit scores are the difference between a 1000$ morgage and a 1450$ morgage. Or a 400$ vs a 560$ car payment. Or if theres a house or apartment to rent and the playing field is 100% equal, the party with the better credit will win.

Also what babbys widle cocksucker doesn't know is many fortune 500 companies look up your credit score along with your criminal records to see if you're a responsible adult or just a blowhard with a degree.

A good credit score is much more valuable then the cash piled up you save on interest.

Bullshit, yes but also reality.

Sorry for the rant...

>>14055748
If you have strong credit, then no, it's not a bad idea. Spreading the cost out over a length of time will ease the burden on your finances, help you build more credit, and the interest rate should be small

>>14056149
This. /o/ fails to realize the sheer number of people who have no savings. As in literally if they can't get a car financed with no money down, they would never be able to buy one

Sometimes they are just dumb and can't live within their means.

Sometimes they are forgetful, and can't manage to pay bills on time.

And sometimes they are/were long-term unemployed and have a legacy of living off of credit/letting things default. Debts have a tendency to double/triple in the span of time between the first missed payment and the end at a collections agency.

I've asked for help on /biz/ about it the last few weeks, too.

Well fuck, I'll see what litigation options are available. There's a retired assistant DA (She still works, just not for the DA) I used to do volunteer work with, but she's a friend of the family, so I don't know if she'd just tell them I was trying to look into suing them or not. Does asking for any sort of legal advice count as attorney/client privilege?

>>14056947
>I've asked for help on /biz/ about it the last few weeks, too.

That was your first mistake

And no, don't get anyone involved with your family, that's just asking for shit to get messy. Asking for legal advice does not give your privilege, you have to legally (as in sign a piece of paper) retain someone as your legal council

Seriously bro, as pointed out above, this is something that could follow you for YEARS, and it's a fucking federal crime. Ignoring it could have catastrophic long reaching consequences. In short, it could come back to bite you in the ass 20 years from now if you never take steps to correct it

Everything you said is completely built off of uneducated, preconceived notions about credit.

You can still be financially responsible and take full advantage of the various things credit will allow you to.

Stop being a luddite and get educated, because credit isn't going anywhere soon.
>>
>>14056947

As LPG has said, get yourself legal council with a lawyer that specializes in bankruptcy and debt. As he said as well, if you're being serious that your parents legitimately stole your identity and ruined your credit, there will be lawyers who will talk to you and likely take the case upfront with no cost to you, because you're going to win.

And to reiterate what others have said, you have to stop thinking this as a thing between family. Purely think about your future. Credit is needed, man. I'm sure LPG has an extensive knowledge of the repercussions of bad credit. All I know is that my parents went bankrupt, ruined their credit, and then suffered for 15 years while they attempted to rebuild their credit to something that was usable. This is your life you're protecting. You're not attacking your parents, you're defending yourself. Get serious legal help.

Get some legal help that's completely removed from your family. NOT the retired DA.
>>
>>14056854

You only have that degree of "I don't want to hurt them" because you don't fully realize the extent of what your parents did. Your parents have financially fucked you for at least 7 years.

Look at this post >>14054674

Your parents don't obviously love you a whole lot to steal your identity and literally financially ruin you for years.
>>
>>14057165

>>
>>14057183

Same guy here. For the parents-identity theft-credit guy.

A true story, I know a guy who had his parents do this. Someone I know had a mom and stepfather put a whole bunch of shit in his name. Cars, a whole bunch of other shit.

His credit is so fucked right now that he, quite literally, can't even get cable television for some reason. He never took care of it and now he can't finance a car and is constantly having to buy new piece of shit ruined cars that last a few months, because all he has is cash. Can't get cable TV. A whole slew of other shit.

Just in-case you didn't think it was serious enough. I'd really like to press how serious the situation you're in is. Get it taken care of.
>>
>>14057204

No. It's not, you can bitch and moan all you want all the live long day, but there's two things to note.

1. You're wrong.
2. Credit will always be a part of your life, regardless of whether you use it or not. Your name will still always be tied to credit in some way. No one doesn't really have 'no credit" they just haven't established credit. Trust me, if someone wants, they can get your info and still finanically ruin you, even 'without' credit.

Gripe all you want, that is the 100% reality of the situation. The best you can do is tell the Credit Bureaus in your country to put a "Freeze" on your credit (You need to redo this every so often, I think it's like 90 days or something) and to send you yearly credit reports to make sure it's not being used. This is about as close as to you having 'no credit that can be used' as you can get.

Again, being vigilant and financially responsible, credit is a great tool. Getting into a home with a mortgage, making monthly payments (you'll need to do that with rent, anyway), and then actually getting equity back with your monthly payments (you get nothing with rent) is the biggest and most common plus. Other pluses include things like Cashback Credit Cards, which is literally free money.

>>
>>14057642

>>
>>14057622
To step in, not having credit doesn't by definition make you poor. You can, in a limited way, exists without ever using credit. However....

You would be foolish NOT to exploit credit to your advantage. Having it puts you in a position of power in almost any type of financial transaction. You can dicate terms instead of having terms dicated at you

Think of this was. I have 50 grand to go buy a Mercedes. I could pay for it cash. But instead, because I have a credit score of 840, I finance it at 0%. I then stick my money in a saving account where it earns 1.2%. I can draw out the monthly payment each month, but the remainder of the money sits in the bank earning me interest.

At the end of 5 years, I have the car, but my 50K worked FOR ME in my savings, I had a cash reserve on hand in case an unexpected expense arose, and I earned interest, instead of just spending 50K at once. If you had shitty credit, you couldn't do any of that

Good credit lets you put your money to work, and I have never seen anyone who I personally, by my own LPG standards, would consider successful who hadn't cultivated good credit and used it to his/her advantage

In short, you can mine coal with a pick axe. But why would you want to when a small amount of common sense gives you a much higher return on your dollar

>I don't think she's smart enough to manage work and school unfortunately

You would still wanna take steps to protect your identity anon. Get your SS number changed. Get your credit profile frozen so you have to give verbal authorization for anyone to pull it. Plus you would want an official record somewhere that you actually filed a report for stolen identity.

As far as a lawyer charging more than what the debt is worth, it would still be worth it TO ME personally to get it off my record

-Consolidate the debt

-Take all the free steps you can to protect identity

-Sue your parents in small claims for whatever the maximum amount your state allows
>>
>>14058003

>>
>>14058032
shiiiiiiit

sue them for the total amount of the bad debt then. Small claims is self representation. I've been in it 3 times
>>
>>14058032
Then sue them for it or see if you can get a criminal case for it, providing the statute of limitations hasn't run out.

You really need to just find a lawyer, they'll inform of all your available options.
>>
Hey LPG, I'm apart of navy federal credit union and I have no credit. I really want to finance a 12kish car and I feel like that's an easier way to build my credit. I worked out the little math and I'd be doing about 7k on interest at about a 16% (which I think is really bad, right?). Should I go through with buying the car? It's an FD, so it's going to appreciate so long as I keep it nice. That's pretty much the only reason I'm willing to take such a hefty interest hit
>>
>>14058041
Only lawyer I've spoken to has my option at try to pay everything off, but there's nothing I can do to really get it removed or go after my parents.
>>
>>14058073
Dude.

You were 17 when a loan contract was signed. You can not legally sign a loan at 17. Someone signed that loan. The paperwork for it exists somewhere, and as a minor your parents are directly responsible for it. You could absolutely sue your parents in small claims court.

You need to go talk to a lawyer in person, and lay out the entire scope of what is going on. You have a civil and a criminal case with what you have described

>>14058058
That's a very strong 'maybe' on your FD appreciating anon. And I wouldn't touch ANY car loan at 16%
>>
>>14058094
Ah, but it was a student loan with the government. I was informed that such a loan is literally the only single loan that can be signed and valid despite the signer being a minor. That was made exempt due to the amount of 17 year old high school graduates.
>>
>>14058032
Goddamn what kind of yank state lets small claims go to 25k.

I could only get 5k the last time a cunt vandalized my car.
>>

>>
>>14058105
yes, but as a student loan, your parents would have to have either co-signed, or signed as a guarantor, no government student loan ANYWHERE lets a 17 year old sign on by himself.

Even if your parents had the paperwork faxed or mailed, did it all themselves, and sent it back in, copies of the original paperwork exist

Not saying he isn't lying but living in a van is common way people in silicon valley try to avoid being ass-raped by the cost of living in Commiefornia

You get a plumber's van, register and insure it in a cheap state and live in it while you work for several years until you can get a mid level or better job in a not shit region. If your office has showers you park half a mile from the office and ride a bike in. If not you get a gym membership

Most of the guys that do this are the first generation to go to college so being the standard of living isn't all that bad when you grew up in or near a trailer park.

No dude. Fuck no. Time to be an adult and stop letting people fuck you over. Don't talk to your parents friend. Don't talk to your parents.

You don't necessarily need some special lawyer. What you need is to talk to different lawyers instead of 4chan. Set up consultation meetings with different lawyers so you can tell them your story and ask how they can help. This is free. They will tell you what they can do and any cost involved. Go out and talk to 10 different lawyers, SOMEONE is going to be able to help you.

Also follow the steps the LPG said about protecting you identity going forward and document this CRIME. This is no different than your parents gang raping you and forcing you to eat shit. DO NOT TRUST THEM and start looking out for yourself.

What's better for building credit guys?
Putting more on the downpayment and going for a short term, aggressive loan?
Or putting an average downpayment and going for a longer more passive drawn out loan?

I don't wanna waste money on interest but I also would like to have good credit.
