Hello /o/

I know Toyota and Honda have a proven record for being reliable, but havent many other brands? It seems like everyone I talk to who isn't into cars just thinks anything that isnt toyota/honda is shit. Any thoughts /o/? Are they really just superior to the other jap, american companies?
>>
honda's automatics transmissions are generally terrible. many toyota engines drink oil.

early 90s to early 00s nissans are objectively reliable. a lot of high displacement american engines like chevy/ford blocks are reliable as fuck and easy to work on.

tl;dr no, honda and toyota aren't necessarily superior. they have their issues. normies have their opinions because brand loyalty and marketing. plenty of other brands make equally or more reliable products, and plenty of toyota and honda products have shit-tier quality issues.
>>
>tfw I'm a normie looking to buy a 95 celica rev3
>no particular reason because I don't know shit, just want it

Would you buy one /o/?
>>
>>14049028
>A huge number of entry level Hondas/toyota a sold when compared to other car makes because honda/toyota is inexpensive, So more of them are still around simply because more had been sold.

>you can neglect the engines and not do regular oil changes and somehow they are still okay. (I went 19,000km on a single oil change in my 04 saturn vue v6 because of laziness...only thing I noticed was it wouldn't hit V-tech as well because of low oil pressure)

>compared to other cars from japan most toyota/honda body's don't rust quite as much so that helps pass safty and keep them on the road... my 1990s legacy ran like a champ after 600,000km but the body rusted out so I had to scrap it.

Most cars can see very high mileage if they are treated right but Hondas/toyotas just seem to be a bit of a snowflake when it comes to surviving neglect and abuse.
>>
>>14049048
I'd rather an MR2 or a 300zx but those celicas usually run pretty cheap so why not
>>
>>14049063
300zx tt was the car that claimed the life of my best childhood friend... it would blow the doors off most cars on the road and I would recommend it to anyone. amazing car. Get the 2+2 if you can it is a better car all around and can handle a engine swap much better
>>
>>14049048

>>
>>14049107
But it's half that on my 2000 yaris. ;_;
>>
>>14049112

The art of boring shitbox*
>>
>>14049165
The Coupe was , for the most part American market only.
Americans got the coupe from 2000-2005.
Canadians got the coupe from 2000-2002. The coupe was replaced in Canada by the 2 door hatchback. From the B-pillars forward, the coupe is the same as the 2 door Echo/Yaris hatchback. Even the doors are interchangeable. From the B-pillars back is where it was changed.
>>
>>14049193
what shitbox isn't boring?

"may you live in interesting times" is a classic apocryphal curse. pure shit cars aren't boring if they're constantly blowing up or constantly undriveable. that's what separates shitboxes from pure shit: boredom.

>>14049200

a good chunk of the floorpan and suspension parts are interchangeable. I'm sure all that's needed to install a Celica rear suspension into a Corolla is to weld in the Celica's trunk pan. seat will swap over, struts/shocks will swap over, brake parts will swap over. Hell to do a rear disc conversion on a Corolla, everything you need comes from a Celica and is a bolt-on affair. The only modification needed is to redrill the rotors for 4-lug wheels if you aren't converting to 5 lug.

In my experience, over the long haul, with the exception of fuel mileage, which may not be that big of an issue depending on how/how far you drive, there isn't anything much cheaper to run than a late 90's early 00's Buick with a 3800 and a 4T65E. A whole lot of shit would have to break on one of those to even approach the cost of an inevitable timing job, and if you maintain them aggressively, they will run well past 300k. My LeSabre had over 500k before the trans finally bought the big one and when it did, I just got another Buick.

Avoid it like the plague. In fact, avoid ANY car with a CVT. It's not just a meme. CVTs are notoriously unreliable transmissions.
>>
>>14061923
What do you recommend? The corolla has a 4 speed
>>
>>14062065
>The corolla has a 4 speed
Only absolute base models. higher trim models use a CVT.

I would look at the Scion iA instead. It uses a 6 speed automatic. Other suggestions include the Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic, Buick Regal and Verano, and Acura ILX.

I would also look at the Ford Focus. While all the above cars have proven reliable automatics, the Focus's dual clutch automatic is known for being problematic. But it's STILL more reliable than a CVT.

No they really aren't as good as the average normie will tell you. They're cheap and theres no shortage of them. Along with brand loyalty and marketing it just makes them sell and sell and sell.

Other imports are good. Even koreans are stepping it up recently. GM and ford have recovered well too in recent years.

Tldr theyre ok.
>>
>>14049028
Throughout the '80s and first two-thirds of the '90s, they were consistently better than the rest in more ways than just reliability. They've lost that edge and now cruise on reputation - but you can do that as long as you're around as good as the competition. Not, like the Big 3 did for a while, if you dip below them.
>>
>>14049059
The are snowflakes because the Hondas of the 90s had engines that could rev to 8000 RPM and were rarely taken above 4000 by the normal commuter. The auto transmissions were and still are the weak link in the system and to some degree i-VTEC.
