Reposting this thread because it got pruned early due to yesterday's spam.

I'm looking for a SUV (or pickup) to call my adventuremobile. It needs to be manual transmission, and very spacey, as I'm 6'2 and hate driving in tiny cars. I'll also probably be removing all of the back seats and renovating the back of the vehicle into a little sleeping area with a mattress, heater and all. Something you would normally do in a van, except vans kinda suck.

I'm currently looking at the Subaru Forester but I'd like to get some recommendations from you all.

The Subaru Forester CROSSOVER is a very nice car.
It has been a CROSSOVER since its inception. And I highly suggest it.
It's probably the most SUV/Wagon level CROSSOVER vehicle out there. Which is great.
For a CROSSOVER.

not legal in U.S.

Crossovers are hatchbacks on stilts with very poor AWD systems (if at all), terrible handling and compromised interior space due to 'muh style'. They also have shite fuel economy and no redeeming features other than 'active rolls over easier than most dynamic'

The (pre 2008) foresters are wagons asthey are the opposite of all the above

Also kei cars > crossovers and generic never offroading SUVs
>>
>>14037470
Ah. Well, what's an actual vehicle capable of offroading with a lot of space?
>>
>>14037022
if you're only going to be doing light off roading, I would suggest a Honda Element. With the back seats removed, it's cavernous.
>>
>>14037022
Toyota 4runner, if you can find a descent one...

OP here, let me clarify on what type of offroading I'll be doing for future reference

Will I be riding around on forest service roads, and bumpy dirt/sand roads? Yes.

Will I be climbing up rocks and driving through mudslides? No.

>Will I be climbing up rocks and driving through mudslides? No.
Yeah. An AWD Element or like any Subaru or real Jeep (like, not a Compass or Patriot) will work just fine then.

I used to have a KJ Liberty Renegade with a Sunroof, and at 6'3" tall, I had a ridiculous amount of headroom in the thing. They're also pretty cheap, even if they're generally kinda shitty on road.

The delica is also a van.

You need an Isuzu rodeo. 4x4, option for stick shift, the 3.2L V6 is fun, has the body roll of a Winnebago, but small and light enough to be thrown around.. At least that's the experience I've had so far.. I've only been driving for about 1 and a 1/2 years.. My beaten to shit hooptie has been running fine, as long as I kept the oil fresh and topped off

if you get that forester you can say goodbye to the option for the low gear ratio, thats fine if you dont plan on getting out yourself if you get stuck off the side of the road on a rainy day or down a driveway. im not personally a subaru fanboy they look pigfat and soccer momish. they have the same fuel economy as a truck because of there awd system creating unnecessary power loss. i'd rather have a honda civic than a subaru forester. the 2.5i imprezas are pretty gud looking doe.

check out these alternatives, 2000-2006ish nissan frontier, nissan xterra is supposed to be decent aslong as you dont get the first gen, nissans are going to be cheaper than both subaru and toyota. toyota 4runner or tacoma, i would rather go with the tacoma. or a dodge dakota. i would pass on ford anything, chevy anything, and dont believe anyone otherwise. peace

Yeah, but manual options in 80's are limited in the US, which is where I assume OP is. 3rd gen 4Runner is worthy substitute.

For more info OP, Muh Rodeo has 4x4 Low, which has been used on occasion for pulling cars from snowy ditches last winter.
Also, pic unrelated.

Element would be great. When I lived in El Paso, I took my AWD Element through some pretty decent dune trails, never skipped a beat. Only time I got stuck, it was because we had stopped to do something, and later when I tried to drive off I left the parking brake on, but that motherfucker drug it's ass for a awhile before it stopped. Took off the parking brake and it got out of the hole just fine.

I've been driving a 2001 subaru forester for the past 6 years and it's been fantastic handling the rough maine terrain, I've never gotten stuck even in deep snow and it feels so planted. i've also slept in the back quite a few times since the seats fold mostly flat, but if you're 6'2" you probably won't be able to lie down and stretch out all the way
>>
>>14040713
maybe if I sleep at an angle I will?
>>
>>14040918
if you tilt one of the front seats forward a tad and get a nice big pillow i bet you could make it work. i would also look at the subaru outback because it's a bit longer and has probably more sleeping space
>>
>>14041150
Was looking at the Outback, but I want something with manual transmission, which only the Forester has and not the Outback for some reason.
>>
>>14041356
Just get a legacy and put outback suspension
