So I'm signing up with the Canakek Chair Force as an avionics technician and I'll probably be starting basic in a few months. I want to ditch my autotragic econobox for a fun driver-oriented car, but I'll only have maybe 13k in the bank or so by then, and my car is only worth 4k or so.

Anyway, my starting payment will be 50k/year or a bit over 4k/month. If I find that I like and don't suck at my job, that's 5 years (minimum) of stable and reliable income. According to /k/ (not the best source, I'll call a recruiter later) at least half of that will be disposable income.

If that's the case, I could set as much as, say, 800 or so per month to finance a good new car or an even better pre-owned car from a dealer. Or maybe get something cheaper and upgrade it myself. Does that sound like a good idea?

Pic related is just a possibility, not set on anything yet.

I'd say go for it if you can afford to save some with all the costs of the car and living expenses.

The new wrx is good. My dad just got one about a month ago and hes loving it.

Personally tho. I'd say get something 3 years old with low miles. Its almost new and a way better value

It sounds like a horrible idea. Listen to your drill instructors or whatever they call them over there. You will not live comfortably throwing away more than half your money at a car that will be worth shit in a couple years. That isn't even including insurance.

Don't get married or buy a brand new car.

>more than half

Less. Closer to ~40% of what is left of my disposable after living expenses and retirement savings. I don't have any plans to have a family or get a home larger than a townhouse later in life, so I don't have much to save up for.

>never buy new

Yeah, I'll probably just get something "new" from the last decade with under 50k miles or something.

The finance company may charge you a higher percentage just because you are military, since you are considered a risk due to job pressures: even though you may not be performing active service in a theatre of war at all during the 5 years, there is still a risk of you perishing in your duties or losing your mind or suffering from some kind of psychological condition, and the finance company will offset this risk by charging you higher APR—naturally if you get an interest free deal (which you might not, because lolmilitary) then disregard the aforementioned. Then there's the case of you possibly being called overseas to service aircraft there, which will require you to store the vehicle and pay fees. You still have to pay the finance payments regardless of you driving the car or not, which will also still be depreciating.

Get a second hand car with your existing capital. Don't finance anything. If it's a lease finance, FUCKING DON'T X10.

What the fuck? 40k/yr?
I'm in the DEP as a Marine poolee and my starting pay is gonna be god damn 24k
fuck me

>"The starting salary for a fully-trained Avionics Systems Technician is $49,400 per year; however, depending on previous experience and training the starting salary may be higher. Once all required training is complete, they are posted to a location within Canada where they complete on-the-job training on the equipment specific to their home unit."

So I guess I get a less good pay during basic and training which will take most of the year, after that it's 50k and up.

Only 24k? Jesus christ, that's poverty level.

Literally best new recruit advice ever.

Don't get married, don't buy a car.
>>
>>14036781
>don't buy a car

Why? I don't want to be cooped up on base all day during my off-time or on weekends. I still want to go places and I'd rather not take the bus.

Pretty sure my recruiter guaranteed I wouldn't be going overseas during my first four years. Makes no sense they'd send a rookie anyway. And I doubt Trudeau has any interest in wars anyway, it's an attack on his favorite religion.

>don't get married

Even if I wasn't socially retarded, I wouldn't be stupid enough to try this.

It's not actually "don't buy a car at all ever." Just don't buy a nice new car that's worth any serious percentage of your income. $40k isn't that much, really, and it's important to save when you're young. Military guys do it all the time, buying WRXs, and F250s and Mustangs.

I'm a member of the vaunted 1% and drive a fifteen year old truck. Cars are money pits.

Wait that's 40k CAD or USD?
Anyways, you get paid much more than me. In the American military payment is based off of rank, not job. I think that's really awful but whatever

He's only factoring in base pay.

The medical, dental, vision, housing and uniform allowances, dependent allowances, et cetera are often worth far more than just the base pay alone.

Here's a calculator that shows the rough civilian equivalent of your income.

This doesn't take into account tuition assistance, GI Bill, tricare, or any other benefits available to servicemen. You can add probably about 8k to compensate for that.

So an E-2 with less than 2 years in makes the equivalent of about 47k, not at all bad for a 21 year old.

Also, at least here in the air force, the desired jobs are given a re-enlistment bonus, which is basically certain jobs getting paid more than others.

in the US, military bases are surrounded by payday loan places because they all do stupid shit like this.
