>also a good deal cheaper to make, something like 1/2 the cost

Imagine an ND miata that's 35% lighter, 1500lbs.....

Sounds like gm is the main resarcher in this. This could be a wonderful thing.
>>
>>14028944
aluminum has different, not as nice properties, but at the moment it works well as a lighter alternative...

if this takes off though, it's like "better" steel, just all around better at being steel, and make aluminum mostly obsolete aside from within engines
>>
>>14028955
Yeah, I do you dirty buck-toothed cockney faggot
>>
>>14028944
Except that aluminium is more expensive than steel, and this will be better than aluminium and cheaper than steel.
>>
>1500lb ND
maybe then it wont be slow as balls
>>
unfortunately the bodyshell of a car is only about a quarter of the car's weight. an NA miat chassis weighs like 600 lbs. you could pare it down to 450 with this 'new' technology, bringing the NA's weight from 2150 to 2000. not really dramatic.
>>
I could see this being good for commuter cars, but sports cars are already lighter thanks to aluminum and composites. If it was so revolutionary you would have seen it implemented in race cars by now...

This really, really shouldn't be called new. Been around for many years. It is really interesting though. It isn't a specific alloy, its a process of rapidly heating a given steel through induction then quenching it to make the grain structure incredibly strong. They're just taking different grades of steel and putting it through this process to improve it.

I'm not sure if they have any way of producing large billets or forgings this way though, so engine blocks won't be seeing the love as far as I know. You could make the vehicles frame 1/3 lighter, or keep it equal weight and make it significantly stronger also. I'm inclined to prefer the latter. It'd be a big boon for crash test ratings at least.

They're also using various grades of this stuff for ballistic panels in some DARPA project.

>>14029050
It might actually be in use with some manufacturers, or an equivalent process under a different trade name. Not everyone just announces their trade secrets.
>>
>>14029066
Valid point. And also nice BAJA, I'm on formula myself
>>
>>14029058
>while being cheaper
standard gizmag/popsci/ifls/gizmodo claim, just like the super batteries and algae-grown fuel. believe it when you see it listed from a steel supplier.

to be fair, the entire 'skyactiv' concept is centered around these incremental changes that make small improvements here and there to maximize economy without having to fundamentally redesign the vehicle

And they're doing pretty fucking good at it too.
>>
>>14028916
>>also a good deal cheaper to make, something like 1/2 the cost
that alone would ensure that it gets used instead of traditional steel.
i doubt it's that much but cost is always the biggest driver towards implementaion.
this shit has been out for 5 yraes now why isn't it standard?
>>
>>14029261
They just got their first US patent on the process in 2013, and they still don't fully understand what exactly is happening to the local chemistry of every alloy when its flash processed. They're processing steels and then seeing how it performs, though a handful are extremely well understood now.
>>
>>14029279
>not just accepting it works, releasing it anyway and figuring out how later on
fucking nerds
>>
>>14029363
The company is already selling their heating and quenching system, so if a manufacturer had the money they could be making their own flash steel right now, and thats assuming they're not already doing so. Volvo in particular is famous for their metallurgic wizardry, and they could possibly employ a similar process themselves but keep it a trade secret.

The underlying principle is that they're heating the steel extremely hot, then cooling it near instantly to prevent all the carbide from dissolving uniformly. Its been known for a few decades that doing this to increase the bainite concentration in a steel makes it stronger, this guy behind Flash Bainite basically created a stupid simple and cheap way to accomplish it.
>>
>>14029403
I'm guessing someone will be doing it then if the cost savings are as big as claimed.
Will Mr Flash get rich off this?
>>
>>14029452
>Will Mr Flash get rich off this?
He already owned a 17,000 sq ft machine shop so I'm assuming he already was rich.
>>
>>14029032
this isnt just the body shell, this is all structural components made of steel, or even those made of aluminum, with the possible exception of aluminum engine blocks
>>
>>14029492
yeah it's not going to include castings or non ferrous metals
still that's a large part of a vehicle and it makes parts that were of marginal benefit in aluminium more likely to be steel
>>
This is pretty neat. Bainite has been around for a while, but its a little tricky to make and work as far as I know. Only stuff you'd own made of it would be heavy duty steel saw blades, or a retardedly sharp katana if you're a weeaboo.
>>
>>14028916
This isn't a new form of steel. The Youngs modulus will be crap have fun with chassis flex.
>>

Car companies won't. This is good news for their profit margins, not for you.

What are you going to do about it; build your own new car? Yeah, right.
>>
>>14029852
i think it will drop some. not by much, MAYBE a grand or so, to attract more buyers with HEY LOOK THE CAR IS LIGHTER CHEAPER STRONGER SAFER AND MORE EFFICIENT but not nearly by 1/2 or whatever they save. sacrificing a few thousand to make a few hundred thousand is a solid business plan at least in by book.
>>
I hope to god Factory Five gets one of these machines by the time I can afford a GTM.
>>
so why cant you make a block out of steel? especially with this steel?
>>
>>14029944
Im pretty sure its got to do with the tempering process. They heat it up extremely fast via induction and then cool it down just as quick. So it seems like it can only be done with thin sections of steel. Which makes sense, because bainite made the old way was expensive as fuck.
>>
>>14029944
They can't heat and quench the steel fast enough. Thickest material they're working with now is half inch.
>>
>>14029944
it might work with liners

>>14029921
nah they won't make a better car then sell it for less
if everyone is using this material then it won't be a usp
>>
>>14028955
Keep spelling the way your queen tells you to

when will they just start mass producing carbon fiber cars?

The BMW i3 this a carbon fiber frame with thermoplastic body panels on an aluminum chassis.

If the i3's frame gets damages. their are premarked points you can cut the frame. Then epoxy on new carbon fiber frame members.

Not 6,000, around 3,000 to 4,000 for modern sedans and cross overs. You have to compete with every other vehicle on the road, unless you want to drive a coffin like a Smart car, or a Miata.

You can't disregard physics you fucking moron.
A heavy vehicle will physically throw a light vehicle backwards. That vehicle getting thrown backwards exposes the occupants to higher G forces. Those high G forces and the sudden change in direction can tear the arteries on your heart clean open and make you bleed out near instantly.

Except nitrocarburizing is a thing, it's cheap, and it's extremely easy to do. It renders steel rust proof to several microns and it increases the surface wear resistance of the steel.

>Davy settled on aluminum by the time he published his 1812 book Chemical Philosophy: "This substance appears to contain a peculiar metal, but as yet Aluminum has not been obtained in a perfectly free state, though alloys of it with other metalline substances have been procured sufficiently distinct to indicate the probable nature of alumina." But the same year, an anonymous contributor to the Quarterly Review, a British political-literary journal, in a review of Davy's book, objected to aluminum and proposed the name aluminium, "for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound."

So basically the discoverer of the element called it aluminum. Then some butthurt british ringo decided to complain (shocker: a brit complaining about pointless shit and being wrong).

tl;dr brits are retarded and cannot even into spelling and pronunciation in their own language.

We are talking about weight you retard, a car with a stronger lighter frame but the same amount of crumple zone is not the same as a micro car - read the fucking thread.
Incidentally. head on collisions at speed with larger vehicles are by no means the most common type of road accident.
