'99 Subaru Impreza 2.0, what does /o/ think?
>>
Headgaskets
>>
>>14026331
on a subaru a piece of cake
its been done a million times.
worry about shit like rust
>>
>>14026268
very good DD especially in areas with shitty weather, make sure the headgaskets are good and it will treat you right for a long time
>>
>>14026331
>>14026339
>>14026474
Looks like I'll be doing some research on how to spot failing headgaskets and typical rust spots. Thanks guys.
>>
>>14026533
if the headgasket has you will know because the car will probably overheat and there will be foam in the coolant overflow, if its had its gaskets changed you are good to go, if it hasnt and is under about 100k miles prepare to spend about $1500 in the future on getting head gaskets done if you arent a hard core DIY guy. the 2.0L engine doesnt have the gasket problem as predictably as the 2.5 does.
>>
>>14026533

The headgaskets were really only a big problem on the usdm 2.5 na engines
>>
>>14026552
All right, that'll be one of the first things to look for then.

>>14026559
Eurofag here, so no 2.5 NA option.

There's a 2.0 GT Turbo for 4k too, and even an SVX for 3.8k.
>>
>>14026623
if you need reliability just go with the NA impreza they are fucking tanks. if you want fun get that turbo. if you want subi guys to follow you around get the SVX
>>
>>14026660
If I were to go NA it'd be a wagon, because >muh wagon.
Tarbo would be fun, but insurance would probably rape me.
Probably a similar story with the SVX, but god damn that thing is cool.
>>
>>14026669
>>14026669
idk what its like un you-rope but in the states the early model WRX insurance is surprisingly affordable, your insurance company should be able to give you quotes based on policies on similar cars.

were it me id grab the SVX but i have a hard on for the 6 cylinder subis its honestly probably the worst of the three if you need a reliable cheap ride. they dont have the same advantage as other subis, that is to say the primary and long lived subi models are like legos so parts are cheap and pick n pull (if that exists over there) is highly viable.
>>
>>14026697
Huh, you're right. Insurance on the GT wouldn't be too bad. It's the cheapest of the three, actually.
The SVX would be about €10/month more expensive, and a lot more expensive to maintain.
>>
>>14026726
you will have quite a bit of fun with that turbo. id look at both and buy the one in better condition.
>>
>>14026738
Turbo sure seems like fun. Thanks, this was an informative thread.
I'm just gonna go to bed now and I'll check back tomorrow, I guess.

Fucking fantastic. I own a '97 and she runs great at 157,000 miles. Just make sure to do maintenance and change fluids and they'll last forever.

>>14026790
Pic related, my car. '97 2.2L Turbo

Turbo it and blow the headgasket

No, I like mine.
>>
>>14026843
Eh, my personal favorite is the Blob-eye, and I want one so fucking bad, but I don't mind the bug eye too much. Nice Impreza, bro!
>>
>>14026847
nope there's a whole two of us! lol but seriously the bugeye mafia is real.
>>
>>14026854
gorgeous!

>>14026855
id have a hawkeye if i had the money, almost bought a blob eye but it actually shit the bed before i could buy it, blessing in disguise because my bug eye is in much better shape and i got her a lot cheaper.

>>14026552
The 2.0 doesn't go through headgaskets, only the 2.5s made between 1995 and 2004.

The main thing you need to worry about is the timing belt. Needs to be done every 105k. Not too hard on an SOHC. Get the kit with all the bearings and cam seals.

Fuck the impreza

Outback SWAGON or bust. I actually like having a usable hatch.

bugeye started in 02,

Automatic is a stronger trans (people have gone 400+ HP on stock autos) and a vastly better AWD system with a torsen center diff, essentially the same set up as the rally teams were using at the time.

the manual is far less parasitic because of its less advanced AWD system and the nature of a manual in general so its sportier and has about 15-20 more WHP

i have the auto so that where my review is coming from.

power is pretty good for a DD you wont ever have trouble passing on the freeway thats for sure, its sluggish off the line because the turbo lag is pretty bad (remedied with a couple easy cheap tuneless mods, catless up pipe and aftermarket turbo inlet looking at like $500 with self install) and its an automatic. make no mistake though they are fun, extremely sure footed cars. once you get into boost its a very peppy ride that really really wants to accelerate for you, rides well, exhaust isn't very loud in the cabin but has a bit of bass to it if you are outside the car. stock stereo blows donkey dicks which is to be expected but its a 5 disk CD changer and cassette deck if you are into that. seats are nice for what they are, they hug you pretty well, keep in mind they are not luxury seats so if you have a bad back maybe not the greatest but im a young guy so i like them. suspension is fairly forgiving and ground clearance is good.

the trans likes to be driven set on 3rd for stop and go and city purposes, i only shift to drive on the highways and freeways. cup holders are lackluster but its an early aughts subi you should know that going in lol. the stock paint is also a bit shit so keep it washed and waxed if you care.

overall for DD purposes id give the bugeye very high marks its sporty enough to satisfy the occasional itch but comfortable enough that you dont feel every pebble in the road, harsh weather will become a non issue unless its two foot+ deep snow or flooding. cargo space is 10/10 with the wagon.

Add me to the "Loves the bugeyes" group.

Almost bought one. Shoulda bought one but there were so many 2.5s out when I was looking and I didn't want to fuck with the headgaskets...
>>
>>14027036
love me a good outback, had a 97, loved that thing, but idk where you got the idea that the wrx hatch isnt usable.

>>14027099 CONT:
remember you will be needing premium gas 91 or better so factor that in. make sure the one you buy is as stock as possible, the autos are also better for this, no one buys an auto to go to AutoX or track days.

another X factor is the subaru community, you will be buying into a lot of comradery, most subaru owners are quick to stop for another subaru stuck on the side of the road.

anyway sorry if this was difficult to read i just typed it out as i thought about it.

if you can find one in good shape id absolutely recommend a WRX as a DD.
>>
>>14027123
to be serious with you the manual is inferior in every respect unless you absolutely can not stand driving auto or want to build it up and race it. for DD the auto is superior in every meaningful way.
>>
>>14027160
an auto does not belong on such car
