Which drivetrain is best for launches

better launch, better off roading, better on snow and dirt/gravel tracks, pretty much the only awd advantages

So why is it that all drag cars are rwd? Is it weight conservation?

Well, that is if the cars with equal horsepower have enough horsepower to break traction.
If they don't then RWD will be better.

But because they almost always do, AWD will launch better due to increase drive tire surface area.
AWD is basically like adding another 250mm to your rear tires.

If you're ONLY using it for drag racing, then you can pretty much put all the weight over the drive wheels and get all the traction, but in an actual car with actual handling AWD is better, even though that if there's enough grip the weight and drivetrain loss do limit acceleration a bit (read: lol no power vehicles or at high speeds).

on some systems like the gtr or bmw xdrive, yes, they can shift the power down to rear wheels only when needed. on most systems such as audi quattro or subaru awd it means heavy understeer though. there is a reason the best lap times are set by rwd cars

Two underpowered cars with reasonable tires in a straight line the RWD would be better, but two high powered cars the AWD because you'd be hooking up from four spots rather than 2. Think Porsche Turbo S beating a Corvette Z06

Cause awd drivetrains will lose more power than a rwd. Low to mid power, I'd give it to rwd... But mid to high, I'd give it too rwd, depending on tyre choice...

Why most drag cars Are RWD, is Cause when you launch, most of the weight gets thrown back giving more traction, but you would need fat ass tyres to use that advantage...
