Ran a 10.931 on my best pull on ET Streets running 3.55 gears. I think I can shave a bit off my 60' and ET this year as I switched to 3.23 and went even wider on the rears (8 to 9.5). Should be interesting when the strip re opens next spring to see what has changed. Also, if the money allows, ill be swapping in a 543 full hyd roller build with a power adder so there's that.
>>
>>14024710

look at the torque figures, a Ford Ranger with a 3litre turbo diesel got 305 nm of torque yet only 135 bhp. Most passenger sedans get more than this but the Ranger is 2 tonnes. Yet this car is used all the time for towing boats and car trailers.

Look at load weights, torque figures and the mass of the car for deciding tow cars
>>
>>14024795
god damn that's a fucking rocket shit. how much have you put into it? total sleeper, you would never guess.
>>
>>14024824
Not at all. The older dodge half tons were good to about 7-8k pounds. It'll pull a shit box just fine. And to note, I have used my fathers 98 Ram B2500 van with a 318 to pull the Fury to the strip once. Not even a struggle.
>>
>>14024865
That was the goal. I have about 2700 in just the rear end, another 500 in a driveshaft, 1900 worth of transmission clutch packs and stall converter with transbrake. The 512 cost me 5300 to build to this spec. The car cost me 625 cash value as I traded a gun for the car and paid 625 for the gun. A factory 440 was included and it was very tired thus the bore and stroke. Pic related, its the block I'm using for the 543, just got her line honed on cam and mains, new cam bearings, bored .060 over, sonic checked, head decked down by .005. And yes, it looks rusty because its sat for 3 weeks by I have builders butter in the litter bores, cam channel, cylinders, etc.

those pistons are massive. what HP are you making now, and what is the goal for the 543?
>>
>>14021936
I'm not your guy, friend.
>>
>>14024920
I'm making 570ish hp and 615ish tq to the crank now, dynos pit to 480ish/530ish. My aim, which is conservative for a 543, is 650 at the crank and 650tq. From what the guys I am getting my rotating assembly from are saying, I could get there with a hot street cam with more duration than what im running now. With my cam choice taken into consideration, ill be closer to 700hp at crank. However, as I said before, im using nitrous as a power adder over forced induction for two reasons: I can choose when the power comes in and can deactivate the system if there are restrictions. For that end of things, im going with a 3 stage dual plane fogged setup with a plate (125/250/500 shot) and two 15lb bottles.
>>
>>14024995
that's sick as fuck. I have contemplated throwing a 50 shot onto my F250 just for keks, but I don't know that much about NOS.
>>
>>14025252
It's definitely going to be a handful that's for sure. I have underbody bracing and a tucked cage but they may make me add more braces if I dip into the 9s. They gave me a ton of shit with not having a full cage with 10 point harnesses when I got into the 11s. Such is a life.

Here is my car. It's a 1968 Oldsmobile 442.

>real 442
>dual exhaust built into the bumper
>full trim
>only thing not original is engine block which is a per-emissions 455ci Rocket
>4 Barrel Rochester Carb
>M20 4-speed manual transmission
>12 Bolt Posi Rear End - 3:73 Gears
>black on black interior, buckets and console
>original Saffron yellow paint, all original sheet metal

Sometimes I think it's the best purchase I've ever made and other times I think I bought something that's pretty unusable considering I'm 21.

Anyone else have an Oldsmobile here?

If you want a race engine my boss still has a couple of GM small blocks he built for his race cars. His engine and car still holds some track records at Flemington Raceway (local racetrack that unfortunately doesn't exist anymore). He's running about 700-750hp and they redline at about 9300 rpm.

>tfw half your car is literally bondo
>>
>>14025769
No need. I'm sticking with the BBM for the amount of torque I'm going to be able to produce. And I do not need 9300 RPM, this is a street car. If it reacts the same as my current big block does to similar modifications, ill be able to rev to about 6800-7000 RPM, make peak torque around 3800-4000 RPM, and peak out on HP around 6600 RPM putting me dead in the powerband going into third gear from second. I'll stick with a Mopar.
>>
>>14026272
I'd stick with Mopar as well. Of the big 3 they are the one I'd always go with, then Ford, then everything else, then GM at the very bottom. I'm sort of half joking with the race engine, you seem to be heading towards a performance build so it just made the perfect reason to post the video.

GM's at the bottom of my list because my family has never had any luck with any GM vehicle we've had. They all had crap engines. If I got a muscle car it'd be either a Jensen Interceptor (Chrysler 440), Road Runner, or AMX,

It barely hooks up as is, but I would like to put some bars in the bed. My dream is to roll cage it and connect the cage to the bed bars, having them run through the back plexiglass with rubber seals. Make it look clean, but I don't know if I have that much talent. Interestingly, I narrowed the rear end by welding the two short axles out of a ford 8.8.

I wish I could afford IRS, but it's not really a financial option. So I'm torn between a watts-link and a 3-link setup right now, I need to do more research on the two before I make my decision.

The current suspension setup is temporary, probably getting swapped out in the spring of '17 after I've made progress in other spots.

I understand that in the perspective of a purist that bondo is bad because it means the car was neglected but other than that, what's wrong with bondo? If it brings it back aesthetically and the owner is happy, why does it matter?

Of course I understand that it depreciates the car significantly but does it actually cause damage?

The problem you are having sounds just like one my bud had when he was done putting an engine in his jeep. Somehow the distributor got twisted 180 degrees out. Once we cranked the #1 cylinder back to top dead center on compression, we put the distributor in properly and it fired right up

Picking up a Trans Am this week sometime, just collected the asking price they wanted for it. If I'm going to drive it back home, do I need to have insurance for it and license plates and everything, or is there some sort of temporary deal I can put up? It's a private transaction, nothing's registered with the state. Vehicle was in California, now is in Texas.
>>
>>14037091
Do you not have day pass's for insurance down there?
>>
>>14037343
I don't know, I haven't spoken to my insurance agent yet. I would assume so since you mention it because when I bought a vehicle from a dealer, all that business was handled for me and I just had to go to my insurer during the week to get it squared away. This thing is going to be on a private transaction, so there's no dealer to handle all that stuff for me.

so i got a bit of a newbie question here. i would have asked in the question thread, but i'd feel like i get a much more knowledgeable response here

>inb4 long ass post

im still trying to learn how to work on, and maintain these ancient NA motors, but before i get anywhere with ironing out any potential drivetrain issues, i need to single out the first thing.

basically, the car bogs out and dies, when i give some it throttle and i wouldnt know where to start. would it be an issue with the carb receiving too much fuel, too little, or is it more likely fuel lines that are the issue, or the fuel itself? the throttle has some stickiness to it as well, and i havent gotten around to fixing that.

really i havent had much time to put into this at all. it sucks but there is so much to learn, its pretty daunting.

any kind of feedback that would help point me in the right direction would help.

also one more thing

http://fayar.craigslist.org/cto/5347660291.html

this thing has been listed for like six months, but i dunno what the fuck kind of price i could offer for it. i mean, i wanna lowball them, considering how rough it is, plus no drivetrain and all that but
what am i possibly looking at here, price wise, but god damn ive been wanting one for such a long time

this should point you in the right direction.
If you ever played with LEGO or something like that, carb rebuild should be a breeze. If you're loaded or have a crappy 2bbl carb anyway, just buy a new edelbrock or holley. There are online calculators to help you determine the best carb for each application
>>
>>14039366
Accelerator pump.
>>
>>14039236
I have a mexican blanket, but its just going to be draped over the original bench until I get them recovered.
>>
>>14039236
I was going to go for cow hide
>>
>>14039573
if the rubber on his accelerator pump is bad, it probably wouldn't hurt to go through the rest of the carb as well
>>
>>14039649
If the diaphragm is bad then the carb is leaking fuel as well as being bad to drive.

>>14039366
Holley, autolite, or afb?
>>
>>14039634
If you don't have AC then get some sort of cloth section for the seatbacks.
Otherwise you'll sweat your shirts out every time you drive it.
>>
>>14039732
>If the diaphragm is bad then the carb is leaking fuel as well as being bad to drive
yes, what I'm saying is that if he's going to go through the trouble of replacing the pump, which is necessary, he might as well rebuild the carb, which isn't necessary right now but probably will be in the near future

How do you work on your car?

Depending on your area, some rental storage facilities have electric and you can work on your car there.
>>
>>14039952
I can't work in my parking lot for the building. There's a policy against that.
>>14039996
I wonder if I could do that. Get myself some jacks and lights and maybe a heater. Store some tools there and I'd be golden.
I'll ask around.
>>
>>14034959
The rule of thumb is to never use more than and 1/8 inch of plastic filler in any area and NEVER put it on/over rust. Many of those show cars with mirror glass perfect paint jobs got that way with skim coats of filler and many many hours of sanding. Plastic filler is perfectly acceptable when used properly. In fact many times the last step before sealer primer+base coat+clear coat is to throw down a layer of filler primer and do even more sanding.

On the subject of tuning carbs. My 427 has a 750cfm Holley, and it's got some major idling issues. It's hard to start, and when it is running I have to use very light throttle to keep it at 1krpm, otherwise it stalls out.

If I try to tune idle mixture and it doesn't improve the situation, should I advance the timing a few degrees? I've heard BBCs with lopey cams like a lot of timing.
>>
>>14041120
If fiddling with the idle mixture screws don't do anything, maybe there is a vacuum leak? Otherwise, advance the timing until it pings under load then back it off bit by bit until it stops.

Generally a big lopey cam will always have poor idle and vacuum, so you might just have to crank up the idle speed and deal with it for now

Assuming its a stock motorcraft carb.
Take off the top and unscrew the big screw that holds the venturi in place like pic related. Theres gonna be two holes that you need to blow compressed air into to clean out the fuel passages. 90% of the time its just gonna be a clogged passage causing it to bog. and make sure you have a new inline fuel filter so it doesn't happen every couple of weeks.
>>
>>14041120
Could be timing, or just the idle speed. How many RPM is it idling at? Also, is it only stalling when cold or does it happen when the engine is warmed up too?
>>
>>14041159
I've had it ping higher in the revs as it sits, but I've been told it could just be running lean. The worst part is I don't know my exact cam specs.

Sounds like the engine is running lean if you have to hold throttle to keep it running. Even with a fairly bug cam, my BBM idles alright (minus the lope). How large of a BBC we talking? Is it overbored/stroked at all? Sounds like idle jets may be gummed up if your idle air screw does nothing. What's your current ignition timing set at?.

I just bought it last month and put it in storage, so I haven't had a chance to start fiddling with it yet.
>>
>>14043548
Ah I didn't see the name splits! Being that its destroked but with a higher CR leads me to believe that you are running very lean and with a bit too much cam for the carb to run right with. I'd say try a carb rebuild if you want but your CR is way too high for most pump gas. Even with aluminum heads to have to run low lead 110 AvGas with a UCL to get the most power and avoid pinging and that's with an 850 CFM carb. If not, I have to richen my secondary, go to a bigger primary jet.

Seeing as you don't know your cam grind, if it was used for drag as it looks and the destroke lead me to believe its a max effort street/strip cam that lives in the upper rev range. It could be the fuel pump but that is doubtable as the car does run under throttle. Just to get it going until the LS is ready, you could do a rebuild and up your jets or switch to a larger carb as I said above but why bother unless you have someone that wants to see it run.

I guess this might be the place to ask
My dad's kit car has leather seats which are apparently from some really old race car that was scrapped and my granddad found, but the car is open topped and has lived outside under a cover for the last couple of years and the seats are now mouldy and hard.
We've put on some leather treatment which made them soft, but they got hard and the mould came back within days.
I have a feeling an auto upholsterer would upholster the seats, but would they make new seats if I give them one of the old seats to get measurements from?

I'm still planning on selling the whole drive-train for an LS/T56 towards the end of 2016, but in the meantime I'm going to have some fun with the bigblock. It's a learning experience, since I have absolutely no experience with a carb'd performance engine. I'll just factor in the ignition to the selling price.

Learning how to tune a carb properly is going to be interesting. I might have to up the primary jets if I can't solve the lean condition with just tuning, and I've never even disassembled a carb before.

So maybe you guys can help me with this. I did a 4bbl swap on my truck, it has a Ford 360, I decided to use an Autolite 4100 for the carb. So currently I can get it to start up, but it idles incredibly shitty, almost like it has a miss, and often dies while idling. It also does when I try to give it any gas. I don't suspect a vacuum leak because I can stall the engine by closing the choke plate. It also seems like my idle mixture screws don't do much when I tweak them. It seems like it's down to a carburetion issue (unless I have bigger problems like fried rings or burnt valves) but I can't seem to put my finger on it.
>>
>>14056183
A side note is that I pulled all my plugs and they're completely carbon fouled. I bought them new a few weeks ago. I wonder if I should try hotter plugs? I'm using regular Autolite 45s right now.
>>
>>14056362
Try adjusting your ignition timing a few degrees while running and see how she reacts.
>>
>>14056362
Tweak your ignition timing and see what happens.
>>
>>14056374
>>14056409
Alright, I'll mess with it when I get home. I'll replace the plugs since I can't clean them up, I tried.
>>
>>14056734
Oh yeah I feel like an idiot for not mentioning this, prior to my 4bbl swap I was out driving it and it developed a really bad miss that actually kept the truck from running at idle. It would run if I punched the accelerator but very poorly with lots of backfires out of the exhaust. I took it for a carb issue which is why I did the swap, since I had wanted to anyway. Now I feel like I'm missing some other issue that's causing my poor running since it's occurring with a different carb.
>>
>>14056807
You still running a mechanical fuel pump? Could be on its way out and starving it for gas until you are at WOT. If you can get ahold of a fluid pressure gauge from AutoZone (bout 20-30 USD) put it in between the line from pump to carb and get a reading. Only other thing that could cause the stumbling that hard is timing being off by a ways, did it just sort of happen or did it gradually get worse?
>>
>>14057078
The fuel pump is mechanical, but it's new and I actually had to put a regulator on because the pressure was too high. But I think I actually know what it is, I'm pretty sure the timing chain slipped. I checked by putting a breaker bar on the crank snout bolt and it looks like I have about 10° of slop before the rotor actually engages and starts moving.
>>
>>14057592
Shit. Whelp that's definitely it then. Being ohv, do you have a tensioner or is it set by a cam bolt? Haven't torn into a 390 in a while.
>>
>>14057592
That's not uncommon when you consider how many transfer points there are between the crank bolt and the rotor. It is highly, highly unlikely that the chain slipped. How many miles are on the engine? How much advance
are you running?
>>
>>14058587
This. Double check your ignition timing and see where that goes. Hell, the hold down for your dizzy may be loose.

No. Even if it is cheap, it is an old Luv with 180k on it at least. The bed rust may be the least of your worries as the frame could be gone. Also looks to be missing the front bumper as well, but that's not all that bad. And as for the brakes, you could be looking at a line but the way he makes it out to be you will be replacing 90% of the braking system (booster, master cyl, wheel cylinders, all lines). And that's all before you look at how tired the engine may or may not be. I only saw one reference to it in the ad and it said it was not original.

Tl;dr Be patient and keep searching. It will happen.

I know for a fact my dizzy hold down was tight, there was no way for it to rotate out of time. I've also got it set in the best spot possible right now as far as timing goes, less or more advance kills the engine, I can't say how much I'm running because I've been playing it by ear. As far as it being, "unlikely" for the chain to slip, one has to consider that the original timing sets on these engines (which I'm sure this one has) used nylon teeth on the sprockets, so they really weren't that durable as time went on. And the odometers on them only go to five digits, with mine reading 64k. That could mean 64k or 164k, either way more than enough for a timing set to wear out.

>>
>>14070949
>break in the new cam
You really, really, should use a known-good carb for that. Extended cranking is not good and once running you shouldn't turn it off for at least 20 minutes. Either situation occurring dramatically increases the chance of a flat lobe.
>>
>>14058929
I'm back, with my list number.

Research tells me this makes it the latest version of the 750cfm 4160 style. Any major differences between a 4160 vs 4150?
>>
>>14072387
Yes I know. Not my first cam break in. This carb is fine, the bud I got the carb off of said it still ran when it was on his truck, he just said I should probably rebuild it, so I did. Cam and lifters have plenty of assembly lube and I have a ZDDP additive to put in the oil.

>>14072372
Just a cheap Enginetech Stage 1 performance cam. A bit better than stock at a good price
>>
>>14072397
4160 has a metering plate on the secondaries. Other than that, no real difference, you can convert them back and forth. I prefer the 4150 because you can easily rejet it as opposed to swapping a metering plate or drilling it out. And there is nothing wrong with vacuum secondaries unless you are running a very large cam and no vacuum manifold. Going to the 543 fro the 512, I'm going to be low on vacuum so I'm split between converting to hydroboost for the brakes or adding a vacuum manifold.
>>
>>14070940
Rebuilt engine? Did they increase the CR?

I have my eyes on a Camaro with the same 6.6, but depends on budget to build that engine up to somewhere close to 11:1. Also not sure if stock crank will take that or I need to include a forged one.

Oh budgets, why art thou never enough?
>>
>>14074325
Your crank will be fine up to 12:1 if you aren't trying to spin it up too high. The cast cranks are only a weak point when you try to make a ton more power, a compression bump wont hurt you but a large cam and headwork would constitute a full forged rotating assembly to me.
>>
>>14072397
All I can find as well is that it's a 750 cfm 4160
>>
>>14074454
Well this is the engine that makes like 150 net HP stock.

If I'm going to rebuild the engine, then yes, that'll involve new heads, carb, cam. Haven't decided on specifics yet but I'm looking to make between 300-350 at the wheels.

If I'm gonna need that crank anyway I might as well see how much more I can get out of it without ruining its DD reliability.

I haven't done much research yet, tho. I have no plans to do any of this in the next few months anyway.
>>
>>14074597
Then find a forged crank. Not saying the cast one will break, but better safe than sorry. Go full forged or keep it stock with a set of headers and an exhaust. Desmog and it'll be a 300 hp engine again.
>>
>>14074681
Damn. Yeah, I guess you're right. It's gonna add more cost and it was already going to be an expensive job considering all the int. shipping and customs charges (eurofag).

Also, what is desmog? Never heard that term before.

But that's about right for regular pump gas with iron heads. If they are aluminum, 10.2-10.4:1 is a good spot for 93 RON/ 98AKI.
>>
>>14075339
Yes you will have to rejet if you want peak power at that altitude. Also, I suggest running your primary jet a size larger than is required and slightly lean out your idle. It'll up the throttle respond a bit at that altitude.

I did some calcs. Red shows differences between options. Honestly havent checked what kind of valve lift I can get with dome pistons, tho.
>>
>>14075459
Just look at the below deck height at TDC. Then measure your total valve lift and the amount of valve below head at full valve spring compression. Remember, you do want a good quench area as well so don't make everything make just .010 total clearance or you will be hurting. Free up a bit more clearance and you are golden.
>>
>>14075381
Keep it at 10.3-10.5 and you can run premium, any more and you will get knock guaranteed. My buddy has a 400 SBC and runs a 10.5:1 CR. We are going to be thickening his head gasket to lower it as much as possible as he gets knock at 5800 RPM and higher. Ran AvBlu with UCL and it does fine.
>>
>>14075479
Well, I'd have to check before buying any parts and after determining whether or not my deck needs any machining. Hence preliminary. Right now I just entered a deck clearance that I read in some article, which may be normal for these blocks or just that specific one. I can't really tell right now, but it just illustrates I have some options.

I'm not sure which various head gasket thicknesses there are beyond the 0.040", but I figure I can have one cut from some thinner copper sheet. I've seen it done before. Thicker likewise may or may not be an issue, but of course I'm not gonna make any decisions before I measure what I've got and I haven't got anything right now.

And before I'm buying any car, though of course I like to keep dreaming, I need to focus on buying and decorating a house first. I just got a new job so I might finally be able to start moving ahead again. It'll be a while before I can set any car plans in stone, but at least doing these thought exercises will help me learn what I need before I need it. /blogpost

>>14075487
Thanks, that's a good datapoint. I guess I can live with just over 10:1, I'm just used to high CRs because I drive a diesel VW (pre-2010/dieselgate if anyone cares - I don't) now.
>>
>>14075775
I was both posts and I see where you are coming from on the priorities, bought my house last year so an engine build was put on hold. As for the CR, you should be safe up to 10.4:1 on premium. Do you guys use ethanol in your gasoline at all? It's very common here except at marinas.
>>
>>14075821
To my knowledge regular gas ("Euro 95" - for 95 RON) has a legal max (no minimum) ethanol content for cars that arent compatible with E10 or higher.

E85 is the only ethanol fuel sold as such, and only available at select few gas stations, none of which I'm anywhere close to. I wouldn't like to redo my fuel system if I don't have to anyway.

Is it your first house? Did you rent before that or straight out of your parental house?

There's more to it than aluminum heads, it depends on a lot of variables in the combustion chamber size and shape, one example is if you can avoid having sizable cutouts on the piston you can typically go a little higher with CR. IMO it's always better to copy or get close to someone elses proven engine build with the same pistons, heads, cam, and intake, let them do the trial and error with parts and dyno time so you don't have to. Car Craft and Hot Rod have built countless engines in all power ranges, one is likely to be close to what you want to do.

>Car Craft and Hot Rod have built countless engines in all power ranges, one is likely to be close to what you want to do.
Well I guess that's true.

In the end, I'm afraid budget will be the primary deciding factor in which parts I'm going to run, if any at all.
>>
>>14075919
Yeah we have E85 everywhere around here with E10 max for regular and E15 offered.

It is my first house, me and my fiance had rented for a year then moved back with family to both save money and keep my parents afloat on their mortgage ( we took our 10k down and paid off a chunk of their mortgage and brought them current, both my parents are disabled). We then saved about 5k for move in expenses and about a year after being at home, we found the one we wanted to buy.

Renting for us did not make sense in our area as the average rent for a 2 bedroom apartment is 650/mo plus electric. I have a 5 bedroom 3 bath house with 4 cars of garage (2.5 car and a 1.5 car, really need to rip out the dividing wall, it isn't structural) and a 3 car driveway. 2300 square feet for 73000. Area has a negligible crime rate and is 99.3% white in a town of 20000.
>>
>>14075971
I was just giving him a basic go to. From his spec sheets he posted, the combustion chamber size is stated and I was telling how to measure it up. I do know the is a ton more involved, just stating that if everything else is the same, a set of aftermarket aluminum heads will flow well enough for a 10.3-10.4:1 CR out of the box if he has enough carb (650 will run just fine) Factory irons will not flow anywhere near that so unless you want to run super rich and wash your rings out, aluminums will get you there.
>>
>>14076121
That sounds fucking GOAT.

Houses are quite a bit more expensive for what you get in eurostan, and I don't have a partner to combine incomes, so I'd be glad to get a driveway in the first place.
That said, eurohomes are built to significantly higher standards, as far as I can see, so there's that.

>>14076133
Yeah I assumed as much in the first place. First thing you learn in engineering is that any cause-and-effect relationship only holds for all else being equal.
Aluminum also conducts heat better, so I assume that plays a role too.

For comparison's sake, what CR would you say is the max for 95RON?
>>
>>14076149
>what CR would you say is the max for 95RON?
too many other factors.
in a modern car, probably 11:1 or even 12:1

in an old car with a carb and mechanical ignition probably 10:1 max.
>>
>>14076149
It's a pretty nice house and the build quality is good as the man who owned it was a carpenter and built the house to his specs by hand. That means I have a few oddities like built in wall storage in various shapes and such.

As for the 95 RON (regular) id say 9.7-10:1 would be as high as I'd go. With timing adjustments, you could make it work at a higher compression, but you would be losing power.
>>
>>14076164
Sounds solid.
What I was referring to though is things like building materials. Houses here tend to be fully made of brick, rather than wood.
Are the storages hidden? (Was he a gun owner?)

Hmm. Well, premium isn't that much more expensive so I might as well.

Timing chain anon here again, I put the new set on but noticed it seems to be very loose. It seems to have plenty of play in it, shouldn't a brand new timing set be tight?

Like a 4 year old's pussy.

Well I looked into it, the timing set is made by some company called S.A. Gear. The gears were made in the U.S. but the chain got made by nips. I'm thinking I should send it back, but I don't really know what to get instead, I can't afford a Cloyes set. I'm wondering if Comp Cams makes a good timing set because they have one that's $20 more than this one I bought.

Oh there's also an Edelbrock set for about $60, same as Comp.

Comp cams is a step up but just spring for the Cloyes. Ive put many of their sets through hell and wont get anything else.

Seriously tho? Take it to someone who knows more about that shit than I do. Because I know about as much about timing chains as I know about how tight 4 year old pussy is.

Do you have any experience with their street true roller line? I could definitely live with $70 for that versus $110 for the original true roller.

Works just fine, Ive never had any of their products break on me yet. Then again I havent really had much experience with the higher dollar stuff, not too many clients wanna spring for the more expensive parts.
