I just went to look up the Chrysler line up since I hardly even notice Dodge/Rams on the road anymore. Turns out Chrysler itself is still a subsidiary and makes cars called the 200 and 300, which I've never heard of. Is anyone driving these or am I just missing them?

The Challenger and Viper look good, the rest of the Dodge lineup is pretty boring but inoffensive. Jeeps and Fiats look like shit, but that's always been the case.

Nissan is generally fine but I think their designers has a collective stroke when they modeled the Juke.

Considering brands as a whole, Lexus is probably the worst right now. They're at the forefront of Toyota's broader transition from "forgettably bland" styling to an offensively ugly look. And sadly, their competitors will probably follow.

Despite the trend towards angry/aggressive styling, I would still call most of the other major companies' brand language more bland than ugly. Many have turds that stick out, but I can't think of another that's got ugly across most of the lineup like Lexus.

Chinese manufacturers tend to do pretty poorly when they're not trying to straight-up clone some other car.

Also, ugly < bland. Toyota's new designs don't even look like designs. It's almost as if they had a computer auto-generate the model based on market research. "They like sharp angles in the body lines, slit lights, and tall grills. Do it!" It's all very uninspired looking. The type of people who buy Lexus are probably going to forgive blandness, but ugliness might be another story.

A better example would be VW/Audi, who were (and are) also criticized for styling blandness. They've worked in the aggressiveness more subtly, though. While their current designs are still rather bland, I think they manage to look much nicer than most of the Japanese cars.

If anyone is being bipolar it's Lexus. It's like they are throwing a massive tantrum of overcompensation after the soulless turds they were spewing out in previous generations. What any rational company does in terms of styling is to translate their design language into a balanced style, enhancing their core characteristics while avoiding extremes. On one end of the spectrum you have brands like Lamborghini, that take an outrageous design approach while making it stylish and decently beautiful. On the other side are the germans, and although their designs are far more restrained, they're far from bland and boring.

It's just a matter of taste while adding subtle beauty and purposeful restraint. A los of asian cars fail horribly at hitting that middle ground mark that tends to make western cars so appealing.
