Do I just pick the highest grade for my Hyundai Veloster?

No, whatever the manual states unless you have your car custom tuned for another octane.

Literally every car has an owners manual. If yours doesn't have one the previous owner must have tossed it, a new one is cheap on ebay though.

Their Owner's Manuals are available on their service website..

Oh, so you're just an idiot.
>>
>>14010338
10 bucks is expensive? I'm not talking about a Haynes or Chiltons manual, the owners manual is like "here's how the radio works" and "put this pressure in the tires".
>>
>>14010338
God you're a fucking moron. You can't fix shit without a manual, so I don't know what the fuck you're doing. An owner's manual isn't a factory service manual, either, so I still don't know what the fuck you think we're talking about.

My dad always said it's good to use higher grade gas to extend the life of the engine. He always put 93 in all his vehicles.

I also have hard for some time now that BP premium grade in particular is the holy grail of gasoline.

Wow. You get so many choices. Here in EU we only get to choose between 95 and 100 octane.
>>
>>14010227
It most likely requires only regular. Putting a higher octane gas in it does nothing for performance or longevity.

We usually get 3 grades. 87/89 or 91/93 at low altitude and 85/87/91 at high altitude. Your gasoline uses a different rating method which is why the numbers are different.

91 is the lowest in aus? or does the rating change somehow? :/

Yes, the ratings are different. We use AKI which is an average of RON and MON while you just show RON.

we get 91, 95 and 98 here.

it's not a turbo. Turbo was like $100 more a month on the payments but now kind of wishing I did get it.

Shit is slow as fuck. Still the fastest car I've ever had so far though. I consider it a starter hot hatch before upgrading to something better in a few years.

>Hyundai Veloster

just fill it with water and push it into a landfill.
>>
The car is decent on gas however. Averaged 33mpg so far rhis week mostly highway which was why I was asking about the gas.

My dad is swearing that if I switch to 93 I will get improved fuel economy, but the manual says 89 is sufficient for the car.
>>
>>14016600
Luckily I have gap insurance, so this is feasible....
>>
>>14016607
There's no way your fuel economy is going to go up enough to offset the cost.

A girl I knew bought a NA veloster in the highest trim.

I've never experienced something that made me want to never drive again so much in my life. It drives like a yacht, vague as fuck, and the actual interior designs make no fucking sense half the time. My DD is a 2.3 litre mazda3 that's 9 years older and cost less than half as much and is more of a hot hatch than the veloster will ever be.

Also the luggage space isn't really that big either. It folds up all nice to make more room but it's still not that much.

The car is a good first new car for younger people, the ride is TERRIBLE and you bounce all over the place on the highway, its pretty slow but the corners are fun.

it has very little body roll so it feels flat in corners, understeers like a motherfucker though when you push it.

>test drove 2015 GTI
Holy shit I never knew cars could be this amazing after living with a veloster for 3 years
>>
I have one too.

Mine's a bone-stock base model.
I think the steering is pretty nice. Steering has a nice weight to it which is good for a light car. Steering is also pretty direct, goes exactly where you point it. There is very little bodyroll, can confirm.

The base 136hp engine is more about fuel efficiency, but can be fun if you learn how to downshift and rev... then just do it constantly....
I got a traffic ticket in it for "too many rpms" at a red light or some shit.

Higher octane fuel does absolutely nothing for longevity in a modern vehicle. Modern ECUs will handle any fuel.
>>
>>14020473
Except if the car was built for premium, putting in regular is going to cause your MPG to drop, so you're really just shooting yourself in the foot.

Also depending on the car you can cause damage (over a LONG time of putting in the wrong fuel) but it's unlikely.

If your car is built for regular putting in premium is absolutely retarded and does nothing other than waste your money.
>>
>>14016607
Your dad is an idiot. If the manual says to put in 89 put in 89. Putting in 87 will likely make your MPG drop. Putting in 93 will not make your MPG go up.
>>

>>14010338
You are confusing the owner's manual with the factory service manual.

If you use a lower octane than recommended the knock sensor will pick it up and the ECU will adjust timing and cut power without any damage occurring. But, this doesn't mean you're okay to keep using it long term if you end up needing a higher octane.

A higher octane fuel will produce a slight, yet noticeable increase in torque in the lower rpm range by burning slightly slower on the power stroke. The combustion is able to have a more linear reaction instead of being more sudden and instantaneous.

If your engine is old or has high miles it can benefit by being able to stay at a lower rpm than it would on a lower octane and still be able to have the same acceleration. I'm not sure if any of you fags realize it or not but uselessly sitting at a high rpm will put excessive wear and tear that can easily be prevented.

However, once you start reaching into higher rpms the spark timing will only be able to adjust itself to a certain point and you'll end up having poor fuel economy.

tldr: "But the computer thing is a smarty pants and muh booklet in the glovebox is the word of god" is not a legitimate argument, literally the only thing you faggots on /o/ know is how to make a car drive on crooked wheels and all of the acceleration stats and lap times you memorized to try and be a badass bench racer.

>Q. So, are there any circumstances under which premium gas would be a good idea?

>A. If you plan to haul that aforementioned mother-in-law in hot weather, or are going to be driving up monstrous mountain passes with a heavily laden car, then you might consider filling up with a tank of premium gas.

>Q. But, under most normal operating conditions, do I lose anything if I use regular unleaded instead of premium?

>A. In many cases, no, but you'll have to experiment with your own car. If you take our advice and drive judiciously - without lead-footing or overloading your car - and you don't hear pinging, you can use regular fuel. Of course, you'll lose that warm feeling of giving oil companies an average of 20-30 cents more per gallon of gas. And, you will lose performance that under most driving situations won't be noticeable.
>>
>>14010227
Where is this from? In my country gas stations don't sell anything lower than 92.
>>
>>14010227
no. pick whatever your manual/tune states. When I had a STI the factory tune said 91/93, and the tune I got called for 93. You can only hurt a good motor with shitty gas, it doesn't help a shitty motor to put in good gas (doesn't hurt it either). Shitty cars are designed to be drive and maintained by a half-retarded american pavement ape that will change the oil at inconsistent intervals and put the cheapest gas in it as possible.

Europe, NZ and Australia are the only places that use AKI. Literally the entire rest of the world uses RON.
