So why hydraulic brakes instead of mechanical ones?

So you can stop faster...?

What kind of mechanism do you propose? The only one I can think of that works with suspension is a cable (like many parking brakes), cables stretch, hydraulics can transmit a lot of force very consistently, and are easy to maintain.
