But really, I do like who English offers so many slightly different ways to say the same thing. You can be as specific as you need to be. In my very limited experience with other languages, that is missing.

Maybe it's because you aren't native English or because your methods for learning it haven't taught you a lot of "harder" vocabulary. Though wtf am I talking about. Most people I know have a relatively small vocabulary. They can't benefit from the broad spectrum of words that English has to offer. So inevitably, I can't really either.

I envy you, and your knowledge of languages. I suppose I'm just a stupid American in this regard. I know a little Spanish, from school (at least I paid attention, and know more than most of my pupils did) and for the most part, that's it.

This is true. Even now, with the knowledge I have, I view it so structurally. I know what words go with what other words and how they're pronounced. But that's only a part of knowing a language. Not only do I not know enough Spanish to fully understand it (micro-translations in my head for sentences of words I do know, and no hope for words I don't), but the real life usage of a language is much different from the analytical view you are taught in school.
