There already was an S2000 successor and Honda cancelled it. The 3.0 V6 Honda made for the car was used in the NSX test mule.

RWD allows for inducing oversteer whenever you want, generally for fun times, and contributes to a more balanced chassis. It's very hard to have a front or all wheel drive car with balanced weight distribution, an FR is not nearly as difficult to achieve roughly 50/50 front/rear weight balance. Balance is great.

Also with no CVs going to the front wheels, steering lock is improved.

Not sure why all these magazines are calling it a Miata competitor. I would expect it to cost 40k, maybe lower if they do multiple engines for a base model. I really want this happen, but I'm doubting these rumors. Besides the fact that it has no real source, Honda has being saying they want a three tier mid engined sports car line up. Unless they make it mid engined and still call it the S2000, which I'm sure S2000 fans will be mad. They might be planning 4 sports cars all at different prices, but I really doubt it. It would be cool if they had the S1000 at like 20k, then S2000 for ~40k, then that "baby NSX" for 80k, and then the NSX for 160k. Not going to happen, but would be very cool.

Releasing a car like this would be a good move by Honda. Hopefully Soichiro will haunt the boring designers sketching pig fat Accords and make them create a proper sports car.
