Hello /o/ - I am looking into buying a truck for about 4 grand or so.
I am from the midwest and my intentions are to build a sleeping platform in the back of the truck. I am taking a trip out west to california this summer.
Similar to the photo posted.
I want something that is good in gas mileage and also pretty reliable. A smaller size truck as well, similar to a ford ranger.
My question is what are some good trucks/ years to look for when buying? I would like something with the extended cab but NOT the shorted bed like some of them I see. Also has anyone have any experience with this? Thanks
>>
Don't get a ranger. S10 or taco. Tacos are expensive, s10's are a dime a dozen.

Whats your opinion on the Ranger? -Just curious
Any main difference between that and a S10?
>>
>>13999913
You're the first person I've ever heard recommend a s10 over a ranger for anything.

If you can't afford the Taco you can still go with an old Toyota truck. Other options are Nissan hardbody and Mazda B series
>>
>>13999943
Thats what I was thinking, every ranger I look at on craigslist looks used and abused. The Ranger in the forums seems to be looked at as more of a reliable truck.
>>13999950 Are tacomas typically more expensive compared to a GM truck of similar year and model?
>>
Also, which smaller pickups get the best gas mileage? Im looking at roughly 5000 miles in a few weeks.
>>
>>13999943
The ranger gets shit milage and I will never own another Ford in my life. Taco/s10 get best economy. Taco is prestigious s10 is like a rock.
>>
>>13999950
>Mazda B series

You mean based ford ranger
>>
>>14000108
Based as in pleb tier

Probably because the only redeeming feature of the s10 is the motor, they have a porcelain rear end, a rube goldberg 4wd system, a inferior front suspension, and are much more difficult to work on.
>>
Don't look at small trucks if you want to get gud gas milage.

I have a 4cyl s10, I get approx. 17.8 mpg, I could get better but at that point I would literally be impeding traffic, that's how slow I would be.

Trust me, what you want is a van.
>>
>>14000386
What kind of gas milage would you be looking at in a van??
>>
>>13999901
go for the ranger. OP's pic related
>>
>>14000524

Bad, get a wagon
>>
>>13999901
Why not a van man prolly better all around
>>
>>14000750
What van would i get?
All of them seems to get worse mpgs that a pickup

I used to drive a 2012 chevy express with the 4.8l vortec and i managed about 22.4mpg mixed driving. With vans, you want your foot to be as light as possible. accelerating hard will eat the gas.

17 Mpg highway (yikes)
Im a young dude, comfort isnt as big an issue as fuel efficiency and reliability.
>>
>>14000547
I think I am going to do this. Any model/year recommendations ??

Either get the 4 cyl or the 4.0 liter, the 3.0 liter get 4 cyl horsepower with 4.0 liter fuel consumption.

Umm how do you get 17.8 mpg on a 4 cyl pick up?

I get 18 on my lifted 4.0 Ranger with huge tires. Are you driving uphill all the time with the pedal to the metal?

4 cyl manual rangers are good for gas mileage and can easily get up to 30 mpg.

There was clearly something wrong with your truck or driving habits.

Yes. (not who you replied to)

Toyota's reputation for reliability is pretty widespread, so people selling used 'yotas tend to ask ridiculous prices for them... and worse, idiots come along and pay those prices.

$4k is gonna get you a lot less truck if you go with Toyota.

Other anons suggested vans. Really, for absolute maximum utility per dollar (mileage included), what you probably want is a mini-van, or a tall wagon/crossover (like an Outback/forrester). Low deck for more space, near passenger vehicle mpg and handling. You don't really need a truck unless you're dealing with some rough roads or towing, and you don't need a full size cargo van unless you're hauling a lot of weight or a lot of volume of stuff.

Plus, for a mini-van, Japanese reliability isn't going to cost you an arm and a leg. And, with enough prep time, you might be able to sell off the rear/3rd row seats too.

>4 cyl manual rangers are good for gas mileage and can easily get up to 30 mpg.
lolnope. I owned a 2.5 5-speed and even trying to get good mileage could only get 23, and that was driving impeding traffic slow
>>
>>14000818
>>14000386
The 4wd s10 may get under 20 but even flooring it from every stop I could average over 23 with my 2.2 5 speed. Best was 27.
>>
You know it only takes like 18 hours to drive from the midwest to california right op? You don't need to bring a sleeping bag.
