Struggle is real for school; do to some happenings beyond my control I can't afford housing (And technically not school for that matter) so I'm going to live in my car on one of the campus parking lots.

What's some live-in-your-car essentials? I'm guessing a sleeping bag for the winter. Anything else?

Enrollment gives gym membership, so I have shower access.
>>
Bumping out of curiosity, I'd rather pay $1000 for a Ram Van than a dorm or apartment
>>
>>13996486
Dont bother with a sleeping bag. You will be better off with a couple of large/thick blankets. Make a first aid kit, dont buy one. Bandaids, neosporin, apsirin, something for upset stomach, that sort of stuff. Some water and something to snack on. Anything of value goes in the trunk, always. Parking on campus may not be the best thing. Look around to see if there are any warehouseeas nearby that employ lots of people and doesnt have secruity and stay away from any business. (walmart/malls) Good luck.
>>
>>13996529
I will also add that a small bucket for emergencies would be a good thing to have. Like if you have to vomit or have diarrhea in the middle of the night. Put a plastic bag in the bucket. Toss the bag, keep the bucket. You dont want to spray the bushes with liquid shit when its freezing out and risk getting caught doing it.
>>
>>13996529
>>13996547
Solid advice.
>>
Depending on where you live heating and cooling can be a big issue. No amount of bundling will help on a -30 degree night, and no amount of window opening will help on a 30 degree day
>>
Get a job and rent a cheap shithole. The most ghetto studio apt you can think of is still better than living in the fanciest van

It won't be much more in the long run because you can do laundry and make meals at home.

I live out out of my truck 5 days a week. If I didn't have family to support I would live in it indefinitely. I got a diesel fired bunk heater that consumes half a gallon or less per night. Refrigerator, TV, ect Very comfy.

It's a college town; everything costs about the same because all the apartments are at "Student loan money" markup.

I do intend to get a job, but I'm not going to burn it spending $500-950 a month for an apartment (price varies on roommate count)

Dorms are from $550-1000 a month. I don't have the full term's money on me right now (Only about $800) and I can't guarantee I'll immediately land a job since the school is out of my state of residence (out-of-state tuition was waived)
>>
>>13996688
There's one a short walk into town that I can use. A laundromat, that is.
>>
>>13996521
This. I would live out of a van or larger vehicle for 10 years before you catch me in an apartment or any sort of "rented" living arrangement for one.

Hotels for short term stays nonwithstanding.
>>
I lived in a Prius for 3 months.
Passenger seat turned around, wooden plank going from boot to seat, mattress on top of that.
I got used to the bed but never used to the noises outside (I live in a city) scaring me. Have a gym membership so showered there. Get a piss bottle, maybe some windscreen shades to cover every window.

I live in a living room of a friend right now (geobach) and might move into the bed of my truck after I get a good camper topper. Trouble is finding a good one for under $1K. Other trouble is it's getting colder in VA. Any tips for sleeping in the cold? I was thinking of a low rise cot with a thermal mat and a good sleeping bag. Will be living in it for 8 months. Pic related, exact truck I have but mine's black....And sexy. Laundry won't be a problem, it's free on base
>>
>>13997126
dont keep valuables in the bed. Those tops are not secure at all.

>cold
Your idea seems good to me. If it gets really bad you can just use a small propane heater. "Mr. Heater" is da best. If you do get one, make sure to get one that has a low oxygen shut off.

1) Housie sez don't park near me, i will call the cops and they WILL do absolutely nothing about it.
2) be nice, have a few camp spots and rotate
3) you can use a sidewalk or other flat concrete slab to open a tin can, just rub it back and forth for about 10 min.
4) don't eat farty foods
5) find a 24-hr business, they are a little loud but will almost never kick you out of their parking lot and you have other cars as cover. Casinos are the best.
6) giving out cigarettes will make all the homeless your friend
7) keep your car clean inside and out (unless you have curtains, then just outside) and you will draw less attention
8) have a good family car and not a chester van, see #7
9) if shit gets hairy call the cops they will usually overlook your houselessness
10) find a place that will take your body waste for free, like the gym. Try not to store your waste; any time you buy something use the bathroom
>>
Dude you are going to get ZERO pussy on campus living in your car
>>
>>13997381

Some people go to university because they think it will help them better their lives and aren't worried about getting pussy.

I know weird right?
>>
>>14002209
That's because store security isn't the only concern in a Walmart parking lot.

Like the other anon said, its better to find a parking lot that used by people going to work and is 'quiet' in terms of security.

Protip.

Don't settle in nigger neighborhoods.
>>
-invest in a portable charger, make sure you stay in your school's library as long as you can and charge your stuff there to avoid them dying while you're in your car.
-buy a case of water and keep it in your trunk or somewhere where they won't get in your way (or refillable water bottles to fill at school)
-take the anon's advice about a waste bucket with bag; buy baby wipes and use those to clean yourself if you can't go to a bathroom, they're cleaner and you'll use less paper
-stock up on blankets, buy thermal underpants and shirts
-if you can splurge, buy a foam bed overlay, will make things a lot more comfortable
-since you have a van, make sure you buy windshield covers and park in areas with walls or low visibility
-get multiple spots, rotate daily as to not draw attention; talk to campus police/security and ask them about overnight parking to get an idea of what to expect from them at night
-buy some ear plugs, you're gonna be hearing a lot of things
-do not neglect you car's battery or you'll be stranded for a while, try and get a spare if possible
-if there's a bus station or train station nearby, you can probably park there overnight

that's all that comes of the top of my head; you stated that you're out of state so I assume no relatives or friends houses you can sleep at; have you tried seeing if there's a local homeless center? They'll let you crash there for free and feed you
>>
Bike. Yes or no? Pros saves time and lets me get to further out places without using gas.
Cons cost
Campus has a shitload of bike parking so I can lock it up away from my car

Some parking areas.
Condos near commercial zones usually have street parking and separated garages and gated pathways for residences.
Never park in front of a house in a residential, park somewhere not in veiw from current house that usually has a large fence wall along the sidewalk.
Streets that are commercial zones that have nothing on the other side but have parking are ideal.
Public Transit lots are ideal for daytime parking for rear tinted windows.
Rest Areas were made for overnight type trucking and are not that monitored by highway patrol after hours.
Public Parking Garages are safe, but you would have to pay to get out. Bonus if it is automated as actual staff will not bother you and there is no parking limit. Consult to the rules of each City's garage, as some limit parking time less than 24 hours or are not open for 24 hours.
It is actually okay to park more than a day in the same spot in some parking lots as long as there is not tow away sign.

Risk areas.
Cops depending on the area do not actively patrol past 12pm, but will always patrol pass a school zone.
Residential streets that have cars all over parked on the curb already are actually nigger neighborhoods and should not waste your time.
Public Parks should never be bothered with due to daytime only hours, that are usually not in view.
Private Roads, well essentially residential outlets that have three houses in on street.
Gated Houses/Communities, retirement reaching people who paid pretty big money who won't stand for bullshit in front of their home.
Parking lots with only one store front.
Never park near homelessness areas of congregation, like around universities or some unpublicised route of whatever pilgrimage they do on a weekly basis.

Now the last thing is take care of the car. It is your home and like a home if it is not kept than the neighbors will complain. I seen worse, but why would you drive a car that was a complete mess inside and out anyway?
>>
>>14002474
Depending on car you would need trailer.
Depending on car's location you may need to move your car almost daily.

Walmarts actually encourage people using their parking lots to sleep in. Though some local ordinances override this. It's mainly for trucks and people passing through. Not something to do everyday.
>>
>>13996486
Apply for as many grants and scholarships as you can. Dig around online and you can find pretty. There's a ton of small ones that get few if any applicants. Anything you can do to reduce schooling costs.

You may consider sharing an apartment. A lot of cash strapped college students do. I knew plenty of students that would have extra roommates off lease to reduce their own rent cost. Just keep your things together and have a backup plan if you get kicked out without notice.

College is pretty chill so if you've got friends you might be able to couch surf. Just don't make yourself a burden. Help with chores and keeping the place clean. I've known people that basically lived on their friends couches during and even after college.

Check out the Mazda 6 hatchback. People don't realize they exist because of how much they look like a sedan with the hatch shut. Similar setup, but more more fun car. A tad bigger too I think, which is useful for living in.
