Was in your same shoes. Ended up picking up my caliber srt4 for 9500. 11000 if you count my 3 year/36k mile warranty that covers everything.

Though ideally i was looking for something like a mazda 3 hatch, Subaru outback or forester, or a newer focus. For daily commuters even if i don't plan to haul a lot daily i find hatches to be more practical often enough they're worth looking for.

I have a Forester because snow and practicality. It's also really fun to drive on the weekends since it's a manual and it's lowered. You can also make them look really good for cheap.

Legacy GT/Outback XT, they're around $10-14k. I have an Outback XT and it's comfy as fuck for something not branded as a luxury car. About half of them were manuals.

There's the Forester XT too but they're a lot harder to find without the 4 speed auto.
