Come join us in the rust belt. You can get working early 2000 model Subarus starting at 2000. My LLBean one had no rust outside of a hole in the exhaust line. Went down to a local metal shop and he ground it out and threw on a piece of half pipe to patch it in ~20 minutes.

There's hundreds of used Subarus here for sale because it's the go-to senior car. Then they croak, and you get the car from the estate with low mileage and very little deferred maintenance.
