Keyless key with hidden backup key for a keyless car. Why can't Americans be this level of ninja?
>>
>>13989509
what would you need a backup key in the key for if you lose your key?
>>
I thought this was standard on just about every remote key, to have a steel-key?

>>13989520
If you have no power in the batteries on the key, if it has stopped working for a reason and so on
>>
Why cant cars just use your figerprint!

You could have a backup key still, just like how you have a finger print lock on your phone but can still type a password to unlock it. This isn't rocket science.

Why have a fingerprint scanner when the key has rfid so when your are in handle grabbing range it just unlocks?
>>
>>13989533
I hope you aren't being sarcastic, because fingerprint security is actually a really good idea.

>unlike iris scans and facial recognition, you decide when and where to be scanned
>can conceal your fingerprint from third parties by following certain habits like wearing gloves and wiping down your fingerprint sensor every once in a while
>data on your fingerprint can be encrypted and made just as secure as a good password
>is always on you, can not be lost for the most part unless you do hard labor and your fingerprints wear off

>>13989566
Put a timer on it or something, or allow multiple fingerprints for both a mother and father for a van or something

It's a horrible idea. Every consumer fingerprint reader has been compromised. Most of the time it involves a 5 minute process to create a copy of your fingerprint. Not to mention, if there's snow on it or if you're wearing gloves, it won't work.

Until biometric systems get better, the best solution is still keyless entry. In my car, as long as I have the key on me, it unlocks when I touch the door handle so I can open the door as if it were unlocked the whole time. This works through gloves as well.
>>
>>13990355
That's exactly what a lot of cars do now. Mine unlocks as soon as I touch the handle if I have the key in my pocket.
>>
>>13990382
Computer engineer here, that's not necessarily true. It depends on what hardware you use and the protocol that you use. The ones that are easy to copy are the keycard systems used in many businesses.

I meant wearing gloves as in when you're touching things in public that aren't your fingerprint scanner

It is more of a physical compromise usually, which can be prevented

If you leave the car locked with the light on and kill the battery on the vehicle you need to unlock it manually to pop the hood and jump it.
>>
>>13989533
I think it would be cool if you could use an app on your phone to store your and people who you would want to lend your car to's fingerprints on so even if you aren't near your car and say a relative needs to borrow it, if you've stored their fingerprint you can remotely enable your car to be unlocked by their fingerprint temporarily

Actually fingerprint scanners on a car are a terrible idea for one very big reason

There is no proof whatsoever that people don't have similar fingerprints. That pseudo-scientific statement was made by a man and never questioned. There are people in jail for crimes they didn't commit over fingerprint "evidence" despite proof they weren't even in the same state at the time of the crime.

Another thing is computers aren't used for fingerprint analysis, no matter what your favorite cop shows say. Its all done by people, so there's a very large margin of error there.

Should've fucking kept mine. And they have to be so people won't lose them and complain about their fat fingers not being able to push the correct button.

Remember these? Almost makes me wish I'd saved the one from my last Saturn.

I always thought the keypad-on-the-door method was the most practical in the end. Low-tech, no RF involved, you can use it with numb or gloved hands on a cold morning, and multiple functions available with different codes.

It annoys me that they've gone away. It bothers me that something so simple that it's on my grandpa's '91 Towncar, that probably wouldn't even cost $5 to manufacture today, never became standard with power locks.
>>
>>13991065
As a kid I got in trouble for watching people lock their cars with a code and unlocking their cars. Its incredibly easy to watch someone use a keypad a few times to get their code.
>>
>>13991114
Especially considering there are only 5 fucking buttons.
>>
>>13991114
people do the same thing to get into locked apartment buildings.

When I delivered pizza I had entry codes for half of the towers downtown memorized from shoulder-surfing them. It's how apartment buildings get their mail stolen.

Yet people keep setting their passwords to 1-1-1-1 and not shielding the keypad. Opsec, yo.

My dads Cadillac has that.
