I just finished rebuilding the engine completely and once it was back together learned that 1 of 3 oil seals has gone so all 3 need to be replaced and one of the seals i need to replace requires cracking the case, no bearing puller and it will be a $1500 job in a shop so its sitting in my dads shed not doing anything, so is this thing which i could probably get off him if i found a couple grand lying around.

So it is true, WD 40 can be used for literally anything, even a replacement shock, truly amazing.
>>
>>13986077

Pretty good, but I wouldn't buy one new. For the price of one you can get a nice 600 that's a few years old that you can learn to maintain and won't be afraid to drop it. 600s are perfect for beginner riders IMO.
>>
>>13986077
it's fine. its wise if you buy it used, though, because you'll probably want to get rid of it after a few months, and you get most, if not all of your money back.

Hey that 450 did well over 15,000km on a single piston and rings which both could have gone back in the bike when it was rebuilt, The only thing that was actually worn was the piston sleeve which needed to be re plated.
Considering most dirt bikes only make it around 5000km before needing a top and bottom end rebuild i think ktm's are fairly reliable.

May just be because i know for a fact that the "lol unreliable ktm" meme comes from the 2004-2007 4 strokes which is something i would never buy.

Same deal with those bikes i do 5-10 hours before an oil change and a new oil filter on mine, bikes like the CRF450X, KLX450, WR450F, KTM 450EXC-r, etc are all race bikes just for endurance racing instead of a few laps around an mx track (bigger fuel tank, longer gear ratios, softer suspension for absorbing bumps and electric start is the basic difference)

Amazon used to ship to my country but there are restrictions about what can you buy and what you can't.
So many asshats didn't know about the restrictions and Amazon just shipped whatever they bought, only to get the package lost at customs and a chargeback from CreditCardCo because the idiot that bought the stuff in the first place, left it at customs and complained as not received.
Amazon got pissed and said fuck this, now they don't ship to the third world.

So.. about the pants? or what is wrong with that gear selection?. I like that helmet since I ride a dualsport.

650r, had it for a bit over 2 years now the shifting problem just started about a week back not really noticable at first but it seems to have trouble going into the last gear at top revs, probably didnt keep the oil in check,

propper bike tho never had an issue other than that and its street legal witouth blinkers and mirrors
>>
>>13986588
Mostly the problem is that I think the piston rings and gaskets are fucked. The carb also needs to be tuned. Other than that the engine sounds strong and everything else is in perfect working order, even if it looks a bit rusty here and there. I figured if I gave em like 4 or 500 bucks that'd be good, but obviously it varies from place to place. I just don't wanna tear apart my engine and then fuck something up further. I can handle maintanance tasks like cleaning the carb, changing the oil, shit like that- but a full engine rehaul is beyond my scope and schedule right now.

People disagree with me but I'm a firm believer in 600s. My first bike was my 450R and learned fine even though everyone was giving me shit saying I wouldn't be able to control it. Also, after seeing my friend tell me a week after buying his ninjette that he should have started on a 600 made me hold this position. I think 600s/750s are great starter bikes that you really learn the ins and outs of maintenance and you can keep them and not get bored of them. I would suggest getting one at least 6 years old that you can beat on and not really care about.

what kind of glove liners do you guys use? i live in commiefornia so i don't really need heated grips, and i don't want to buy a winter pair of gloves when i just need a little bit of wind protection sometimes. it would be nice to be able to use the liners as a standalone glove as well, so i was thinking maybe some running gloves? they might be too thick though.

To be honest bro I went to the 99 cents store, found those things people put on their car with antlers on the windows, the nose itself had wire in it and I threaded it through the fairing and tied it. the antlers, I'm gonna snap off the white plastic bits and zip tie them to the mirror stems.

Then I found some silly hat for the helmet, I'll figure something out for that later

It's fun, but it's shit because there are much better bikes out there and it doesn't even live up to its reputation. It constantly needs work. They cost a ridiculous amount because the DRZ is a meme. It's slow. It's heavy. The carb doesn't work right.
I've been wanting an EXC or WR or XRR as an upgrade.

The only mod I really want right now is the FCR39, but fuck spending $600 on a mod for this bike.

I'm not tired of supermoto, but this bike isn't ideal.

I already have knobbies and street-sport tires. I'm getting DS tires to replace the knobbies this month.

I've had it for a year now.

damn that is quite a few repairs. i haven't heard any of those problems as being characteristics of drz repair though. did you buy a poorly maintained one / lemon? it's inevitable there will a few repairs needed when buying a used bike. can you attribute anything to the previous owner?

also, the ktm and yamaha you mentioned have somewhat frequent maintenance, and the ktm will obviously have a higher cost for pretty much everything it needs. worth it?

thanks for the info, i'm not moving goalposts or anything. i know the drz is a fat pig, so i'm not justifying for it. i would love a husqvarna fs 450 or a ktm 690 smcr but the drz is what is affordable for me right now.

Yeah it was neglected but I bought it anyway because I was retarded and excited to get a bike. Most of it was fixing shit that the PO fucked up. A couple of things were probably my fault (snapped clutch cable).

Several of those are characteristic of the DRZ though. Leaky water pump, counter-shaft seal leaking, needing frequent oil changes.

I doubt one of those other bikes would be much worse than this lemon if I bought smart. Don't consider the DRZ your only option though. They tend to have high prices for used bikes just because it's a memebike and people will buy them anyway.

My next bike I'm thinking about a sumo but do you simply buy a dual sport and then buy sumo tires, or does each manufacturer make their own that fits a specific bike? Anything else you need to change?

I'd rather this not turn into an argument about what actually makes a sumo a sumo tho.

You can get a dual sport and add 17" wheels and street tires and a larger brake, maybe some suspension work if you are really into it. Factory sumos are fine too but I like dual sports so if I were making a sumo I'd just have a dual sport with a second set of sumo wheels.

Pretty much. The two most popular choices for factory Supermotos are DRZ 400s and WR250s. BMW also makes a 650. You can also do what I did and start with
>>13987347

And just convert it yourself. Keep in mind you need a way to get it titled for the Street and the conversion is not cheap, so you want to make sure you get the bike cheap. I picked the Warp 9s up custom made for about 1100, but the accels are a bit cheaper.

Sumos are in my opinion some of the most fun you can have on a bike in my area. Great for urban exploring and you can take it off road too.

I bought a CRF 450r, which is an off road only vehicle and it says that on the title, which means you can't register it for street use. The guy I bought it off of said the previous owner lived in Vermont and there you can register them for street use. I live in NJ so there is no motorcycle inspection. I just did the conversion and made sure I have a headlight, tail light, signals, and brake. Dual sports should be fine to just throw on a set of wheels.

if its a YZ not a WR itll suck for any cruising around due to it having a close ratio gearbox.

>source; i own one
>>
>>13988055
You do realise the only major difference between the engine in that bike and this bike is that bike has a 6 speed gear box instead of a 5 speed right?
Heck the bikes are essentially identical with the WR having softer suspension, electric start, a bigger fuel tank and a head light, they even make the same amount of horsepower if you put the same muffler on both bikes.

Idk how many times i have to tell people bikes like the WR450 are endurance race bikes designed to be doing a day of riding before being rebuilt lol, The engines are built to be light and powerful not reliable at a constant RPM doing thousands of kilometers down a highway which is why they require to be maintained to regularly. Ya get a DRZ400 or something along those lines if you want a motard, things are some of the most reliable bikes ever built because they were designed to be that way unlike a RMZ450 engine for an example which will blow up after maybe 150 hours of riding if it is not well maintained.

trailtech x2 headlight with a vapor dash.
the YZ would be a bad choice for that
a close ratio box means you have a tall 1st and short 5th.
so to keep it from revving out at highway speeds you have ot gear it so high it would be useless in surface streets.
when i got mine the first gear was pretty tall, for traffic use but it sat at 6-7k at 45mph
with the WR transmission in the same bike with the same gearing 6-7k rpm puts me at 65-70mph with a nice low 1st
youd also be looking at weekly oil changes and monthly valve checks to keep on schedule

Ah I used a rough rasp tool in a die grinder to cut the relief for the fan and to clean up some bits. It gets away occasionally and leave marks. The bends are pretty meh but I just put the bar in a vice and bent it by hand so they aren't ideal. I'll give ya that one.

Overall I'm happy with it. Would be cleaner if I painted it or something but I don't care that much, I just want it to hold well.

Colors matter. A bike is an emotional purchase. it should appeal to all your emotions: masculine, aesthetic, love of mechanics - whatever your thing is. If someone demands a bike look beautiful, as well as perform well, that's legit.

>>
>>13988586
You can burn out the clutch several different ways, all involving letting it slip or be only partially engaged for an extended amount of time. Of course the whole concept of using a clutch is to provide a "slip" point between the engine and transmission, so wear does take place with normal usage.

Everything in moderation. Used as designed, a clutch will last a very long time. Abused, it will have a short life span.
>>
>>13988602
I'm interested in learning to ride. You can damage a clutch by doing what it is designed for, letting it slip? I don't really understand I'm afraid.
>>
>>13988620

By disengaging it incorrectly, yes. "Dumping" the clutch means disengaging it too quickly, usually at a too high of an rpm, which will wear it out faster than if you do it smoothly.

Watch this video. I started it when he dumps the clutch, and you can guess what happens. Then watch the rest of the video. You'll see when they're on the freeway on ramp he says something like, "This bike doesn't like to be upshifted!" or something. All of his clutch re-engagements are extremely rapid.

>>
>>13988620
The clutch is a wear point between the engine and the transmission. It's the same for motorcycle and car, and wet clutches wear less but still wear. That is their purpose.

When I see a lot of rider videos on YT people will upshift and just release the clutch. For example shifting from 2 to 3 they'll just let go of the clutch and put throttle.

Yes, upshifts can be done very quickly. It can even be done without using the clutch. The video I posted is an example of improper shifting because of the rpm at which he is letting the clutch back out at, and the speed he's letting it out. His bike ends up lurching a lot to compensate for the difference in speed at the wheel and the drive because of this.

>>

Okay so basically when you're upshifting you can dump the clutch but downshifting you want to match the RPM to speed? Unless you're coming to a complete stop at a red light or whatever, then I assume you just brake and hold the clutch in as you shift back down to 1 or N.

Nothing wrong with that, but there's no reason to just make it an emotional purchase either imo, I get where he's coming from.

When I purchased my SV I didn't care that it was an ugly bike, it ticked the other boxes I wanted to tick, and I can't see what anything other than the tank and the dash looks like when I'm riding it anyway.

clutchless upshifting, it werks look it up on youtube, if you flick off the throttle you take the load of the transmission for a split second, allowing you to upshift. Dont try and downshift with this it will fuck ur shit up

Motorcycle transmissions function with this absolute black magic voodoo mechanism of continuously engaged tertiary teeth called dogs. The way they work allows you to slip gears up the ratio if you apply a tiny bit of throttle.
Press up on the shifter, rev the throttle a tiny bit, you just moved up a gear without touching the clutch.

>>13988780
Like this guy said don't downshift doing it. Specific mods exist to let you downshift this way, and you'll cause significant premature damage unless your bike is setup for it.
>>
>>13988749
I feel like I might have given a bad explanation, but let me clarify.
You can both quickly up and downshift very quickly. Your rpm should ALWAYS be matching the speed during any shift, otherwise your bike will lurch due to the mismatch of rpm (at that gear) for the bike's speed. When upshifting this is a no brainer. You reach your shift point, and you shift into the next gear.
When downshifting you also need to be at the right rpm. This usually means you're going to pull in the clutch, quickly 'blip' the throttle to gain some rpm, downshift, and let the clutch out. Since you're going to be in a lower gear, you will need the extra rpm to match your speed. Then the engine brake will slow you down. It also can be done very quickly. It becomes muscle memory. You need to know how hard to blip for the speed you're currently going and the gear you're shifting down to.

>then I assume you just brake and hold the clutch in as you shift back down to 1 or N.
It's usually wiser to engine brake almost the whole way until you come to a complete stop. It's just better to have the bike in gear should anything happen. When coming to a full stop, I will rev match and use front brake down to 2nd gear, and the last 20 ft or so I will usually just hold the clutch in and brake to a stop.

Simply holding the clutch in, clicking down to first, and only using brake to reach a stop could leave you vulnerable. If for some reason you need to accelerate, you need to do a lot of work to get your bike in the proper gear for your speed and give the right throttle.
