i just know the upper timing cover gaskets are leaking, but the cooling system is so far rock solid which is a blessing.

M235i is a much better car but I personally think it looks ugly. 4 series looks much better but it's so overpriced now. A 435i with some options is about $63k in Canada before taxes.

Thermostat stuck shut on me last night. Caught it before it overheated.
I had all the parts with me and my tools because i was planning on changing it tomorrow.
Didnt have the fan wrench though so couldnt change it in the parking lot.

It had been stuck open for a week so i guess my luck ran out. I leapfrogged it the 2 miles back to my friends house which is conveniently where ill be working on it anyway.
>>
>>13980525

I recently got an E34 a few months ago and the temp gauge was off. Usually it would either stay flat on cold or come up to the middle but then fall to cold again. I had the car checked by a mechanic and they couldn't find a physical fault anywhere and said I should see an auto electrician. So before I got to, I'd started a little work on some other electrical parts and after disconnecting and reconnecting my battery, the gauge worked flawlessly every day since.

Until today. I'd driven the car around for most of the day and it was all fine. I stopped and did some shopping and when I started it, the gauge sat just a pinch above absolute cold and the engine was operating temp for sure and it was a warm day. Another stop and start later and the gauge still sits near absolute cold.

Is it just the sensor or might my thermostat be jammed open like a few places I've read seem to say?

manual conversion is a bitch, don't underestimate the cost.

you need: the trans, the crossmember, the clutch, flywheel, clutch slave, pedal box, shift linkage, and you have to have a driveshaft shop shorten your shaft.

it's probably around $1000 if you're using used parts.
>>
>>13980770
Check the female terminals on the temp sender. There could either be corrosion or they may have expanded enough to intermittently lose contact.
An easy way to gauge the connection is to coat the male terminals with a dry erase marker and then plug and unplug the connection. If there's too much marker leftover, you need a new female pigtail.

I fucking hate that transmission, but like the shitbox of a BM way too much for some retarded ass reason to let it go. I'll probably just go broke and pay myself sick for new transmissions like every fucking week for the rest of my life.
>>
>>13984485
That being said, I've heard that the problem with the 4HP22 is that it pressurizes the A clutch pack when on drive but fails to depressurize it properly when you go from D to N or P gear, which causes tremendous clutch slip and burns the fucker out in like a flash or something like that. Apparently the problem is with the seals that go to the A clutch pack or something like that and I've heard that you can either drill a pressure relief hole somewhere or replace the steel seals with some teflon seals.

>>13984613
Too poor, too inexperienced and too lazy. I've had so much dreams and fanatsies of doing all kinds of awesome things with that car, but my inexperience with cars and europoor mean that none of them will ever come true. Also the fact that I have 4 other shitboxes sitting on my driveway and no garage space to work on the BMW mean I'll never get it done.
>>
>>13984627
cheaper than a new tranny it you pull parts from a junker
theres guides everywhere you cant fuck up
cant fix laziness
>>
>>13984645
Then there's one other problem, the camshaft has worn down to fuckall. Apparently the banjo bolts on the head have come loose and don't feed the oil in the right place, which caused the 1st cylinder cam to wear out prematurely. Currently the intake and exhaust valves aren't opening at all in the 1st cylinder thanks to the cam being completely round.
Need a new camshaft too to get her roadworthy. Current transmission should be okay for some time, but not for too long. THe shop fucked up something as it's quite hard to pull the gear selector down the gears, especially the "hand gears", you really have to use force to get the selector in place.

E36 325i, 1995. Bought her in June with 51000 km (no, I did not forget a zero there). She's at 54,5k now. Since then I changed the front shock absorbers, water pump (fucking plastic propellers), valve lid gasket and a few other things.

Took it to get the exhaust done today, two straight pipes after the cats, 2" each. Sounds fucking great

97 328 (m52b28). So much blood and sweat in this poorly maintenanced pos. bavauto probably knows my email address by order at this point. Currently misfiring and o2 adaptation limit codes. brand new o2s in it, brand new plugs, ignition coils, compressions fine, fixed shitloads of vacuum leaks (replaced every hose, intake boots) and cant find any more, cam sensor, tps, maf, k&n, catalytic converter, had the injectors cleaned. water pump with metal impellers, bilstein suspension, guibo, tons of small shit. Given up on it at this point, just a daily driver. Building a 4.6l with twin turbos now.
>>
>>13985740
Oh, right, did vanos seals and bearing as well. Found a few burned out wires in the harness I fixed, but I suspect those running from the o2's to the ecu. Need to ohm them out. Also, the ignition coil harness has a 240ohm 2w resistor that has rotted plastic falling off it. Haven't been able to find a replacement one yet. Junkyards and Bentley manual are your friend though.

I got 2 years ago. It looked like it was in pristine condition when I bought it, my wannabe mechanic brother in law checked it out told me it was a good condition car with very little to fix. So I believed him because he graduated from uti (after 2 years there barely). Within first 2 months Trans program and a voltage regulator. Then cooling system and so on and so on. I love the car don't get me wrong. Better pic With my wife's car.

more:

lasted ~1yr no maintenance needed (paid $3,400)

new wheels+tires, sold 14" bottlecaps (trm c1, 15x7, 4x direzza dz102):
~$800

then idler sprocket broke off (m42) - bad luck (pic related)

$2,400:
- replace m42 w/ 80k miles
- replace 100% all timing parts on engine going in
- new battery
- new clutch

could be worse. needs:

- ebrake (no cable right now lol)
- new brakes
- 5 wheel alignment (steering wheel is a little off center)
- rust repair (4 corners have holes p. much. would not have paid $3,400.. e30 newbie mistake.. oh well, it's fixable.)
- odometer stuck (~160k on the clock, prob closer to 200k body.)
- A/C leak (works great for a few mo when filled, r-134a converted)
- auxiliary fan is stuck

oh it was making noise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRtZlUKPx2g prob about ~200k on the orig engine.

the timing components became worn and made noise, but it died very suddenly and catastrophically when trying to start up (after replacing the timing chain tensioner with a new one to see if that fixed it - it didn't).

hence why i have 100% brand new timing components in my new engine.

Trying to figure out the no-start on my buddy's 1996 318i today after fixing his broken ignition cylinder. It'll run the radio, fan, dash, lights and bump-start just fine but I'm not hearing anything from the solenoid or motor and it doesn't even seem to be drawing any power when the ignition is turned. I don't have any DMMs or MMs at my disposal atm so I can't check voltage drop or continuity, so what does /o/ suppose I do? Has anyone else ITT dealt with this shit? Apparently the car was running fine last night until the cylinder lock pooped on him.
