It's hard to explain simply, but essentially you can think of the spark plugs firing at a specific frequency. Now imagine that there is a sine wave that's pulsing at this frequency. Pretend that when the sine wave hits the top (peak), that's when the spark plug fires. The difference between the peaks is 360º. So if the ECU retarded timing by 8º, it means that it shifted that wave over just a little bit. What this means in reality is that the sparks are firing just a little bit earlier than they should optimally, and thus the engine isn't going to produce the optimal amount of power.

I had a 95 Lincoln continental with the 4.6 amerifat V8 and at 80mph it was less than 2500 RPMs.
I always feel like the lower RPMs on the highway, the less fuel consumption.
Any thoughts?
