Looking to buy a first car.
Want something sporty yet practical (AWD and decent sized). Also want something simple and reliable enough I can do most maintenance reasonably (no Audis, and little supered engines like subies scare me). Fuel economy is not a huge factor.
Looking at an 05 Magnum RT, relatively light for an AWD wagon (~4400 Lbs) with a respectable 340 horses ready to go. Not huge on the looks but I hear the ride is nice.
Can find clean titles with ~100K for around $6000 near me. These things have Chrysler's 5.7L Hemi in it, anyone have any experience with them? Any other thoughts or other suggestions?

If you seriously found a 5.7 AWD Magnum for $6000 buy it.

But you should know that reliability is on the lower side. It's when the car first came out. But the wagon and v8 will always hold its value. The AWD does not necessarily mean better handling, the front wheels don't activate until necessary which means they only turn on if stuck in the snow or mud usually.

well I currently live in PA and plan on relocating after I graduate to CO so I desire AWD from more of a climate standpoint. I may just say fuck it and take a cheaper and better condition 2wd one and spend the difference on better winter tires.

yeah well the other ride i was considering was an 06 impala SS but it has less power (300hp) at 4700 lbs if Edmunds is correct. Im honestly struggling to find something with over 280 hp in a practical body that isn't an SUV. Not that I'm opposed to SUVs but i think a sportier wagon or hatch or sedan better fits my desires.

realizing now that 4700 was gross weight not curb. do you think the extra 390 lbs is worth the extra 40 horses? not that the weight to power is a deciding factor, just not really sure what would take the priority (higher power or lower weight?)

The Magnum will do anything a fwd Impala SS can do or better from a performance standpoint.
