My dad always used them when I was a kid, for a long time it was all I knew. I thought it was weird when I finally saw someone using a jack and stands.

I used them once for a lawn mower ended up launching myself into the air when I put it in gear and had the throttle wide open

Cheap ones are better than the halfassed shit that guy said, but from personal experience many are a bit of a nightmare to get fwd cars up. Often i have to rest them against the lip of my garage where it meets the driveway to keep it from chucking itself out.

They're okay for most things, but it's probably a good idea to have a jack and some good jack stands, just in case you have to take a wheel off.
