when buying a convertible i'd want that sweet soft suspension. a convertible isnt meant to be sporty. its for driving around ncie and easy with the top down and the sun on your shoulders.

It should only be an issue on 93-06 M60s and 95-98 models with M52 engines. I've got one of the warranty-swapped engines in the 328i I've gotta fix.

Easiest way to tell is to look at the engine under the start motor.

>why shouldn't I just swap in an engine from an e46 330i
Cost.

It's kind of more trouble than it's worth if you don't know what to expect.

>>13958644
never heard about the headgasket issues but literally ever E36 on the road today has had the metal water pump installed. it would be impossible for any of the plastic ones to have lasted this long.

as long as he avoids the nikasil engines, the E36 is pretty solid.
>>
>>13959602
There should also be a sticker saying it passed the recall near the engine I think. The only way a nikasil engine was OK was when it was run on premium only (not just 95 but had to be 98) which a lot of people didn't do.
>>
>>13959830
I’m not lazy, I just lack the skills and tools to do it by myself.
>>
>>13959840
Yep. Low sulphur fuel stopped the problem.

Next time I stop by the garage I'll check the manual on the car. I think the original engine lost compression around the 100k mark.
>>
>>13959809
Just buy a workshop manual thing for your car, and see what tools you'd need for it. What exactly needs to be done?
>>
>>13959854
Most of them have probably long since been replaced, I really doubt a nikasil could last this long. It should be easy to tell if it's been replaced considering the sticker and the pic the anon posted.

There is another Astra convertible as well, it's black and has a small dent in the side which the owner paid to have painted but not pulled which I can't fucking wrap my head around.

So the BMW guy is super keen on selling the car to me. Has dropped the price to $3,000 and offered to deliver it if I want him to.

modern manual roofs are pretty easy to set up. you just pull it up over and then latch it to the windscreen.
you'd have to pull over to put up an electric roof anyway.
>>
>>13963382
True.
I think I'll go give it a look tomorrow.
Still tempted by some other cars though it's so hard to settle on one.

There are some others I'd like but the sellers wont drop below $4,000 which the cars are worth it but I just don't know if I can afford right now as I've some other major expenses coming up.

I've been looking at the a few of the 150mm+ lenses because "muh macro" but they always seem to jump in price.

Yeah, I really dislike flash.

Longer exposures + your own light source always end up better, but I guess flash is designed for the quick "right now in the moment" photography when you don't have time to set up a tripod and fuck around with time settings

the 96-2001 engined ones and most of those are the vanos engines and are in the 318i and TII hatchback versions. it took me 3 seconds to google: bmw overheating. the fan clutch breaks, which also leads to plastic impellor water pump failure. and because most bmw drivers arent mechaics the head gaskets cook and worst comes to worst cooked cylinder head... and yes bmw has said to me all their cars have to be run on premium fuel.

I remember a mate of mine had a 3rd gen Astra
We used to rip on him so hard about that piece of shit, then got a phone call asking for a lift one night about 10pm as a "bit of an emergency"

Filthy cunt of a thing had literally caught fire on the Hume Hwy somewhere down around Yanderra, just driving along and 'whump' whole engine bay was full of flames apparently, burnt that piece of shit to a shell. Him and his very pregnant wife literally had 10seconds to get out or be incinerated.

Its really hard to drive when you're laughing so hard you're crying.

My point is for that price, what's wrong with it, and what's going to cost you a fortune to fix. Add to that the fact you don't know if you can afford buying a $4000 car outright and you're setting yourself up for trouble buying an E36. Let alone a flexy convertible one with a piece of shit transmission.
>>
>>13965142

>>
>>13965949
I was talking about the nikasil engine and cooling problems in my post. It's a common known issue. It mainly affects the M52 engines.

The cooling problem is all E36s.

>>13966158
I really disliked the Toy Run when I did it. Clusterfuck with tons of riders who barely know what they're doing swinging around in their lanes.

Then a group like SARS will usually rock up to make as much noise as possible and show off.
>>
>>13966275
I seem to remember someone using a photo of your car and making a comment like I'M GOING LIKE SQUISHY AND LEAVING THIS PLACE FOR GOOD. Then getting paid out because it was Socks and not Squishy.
>>
>>13966280
>The cooling problem is all E36s

Typically that's just the water pump and maybe the radiator but most should have had those parts replaced with the upgrades by now (most got recalled and had the system overhauled, there's a sticker on the radiator).
>>
>>13966290
The original piping tends to rot away too.
>>
>>13966299
Most people who have it serviced regularly should have had it replaced. Like with any car, I'll never consider it if there's no books/receipts and obvious neglect.
>>
>>13966302
My main point was if you're spending 3k, but can't spend 4k, you probably can't afford to own that E36. The cheapest part of any car is buying it.
>>
>>13966308
are you talking about 3k lowballer?
>>
Hopefully picking up a 2011 300EXC on Friday morning. Maybe this time some cunt won't swoop in and get there before I do.

e36 fag here. Currently have an auto black sedan and the paint is peeling like crazy and interior is falling apart.

I'd rather get an e36 coupe with sunroof and fix it up. Also I want to learn to drive manual so why not burn through a clutch that probably needs fixing?

Thoughts? And things to watch out for on e36's on gumtree?
>>
>>13966310
Yes.

>>13966327
E36 coupes are more expensive. Also the clutch is a cunt of a thing to replace in one.
>>
>>13966274

I still lurk semi-regularly
>>
>>13966308
there are tonnes of dirt cheap E36s around and they're all fine. sure you'll get some shitheaps but E36s are just generally really cheap, the redbook on 318s is also only about 2500.
>>
>>13966330

Would really like to learn more mechanical skills. Think an e36 coupe would be suitable?

I've got about ~20k cash I can dip into for parts when needed.
>>
>>13966325
good luck
>>
>>13966280
My experience of it was pretty chill in comparison. Everyone seemed to get into a rhythm once we were all moving, nobody whizzing past at a million miles an hour (at least not where I was) or anything.

Mind you, there were cops everywhere so I think anyone who who was feeling a bit "special" in the head would have been dealt with pretty quickly.

The most "out of hand" it got was someone doing a burnout in amongst a large group of people once we were all parked up at the waterfront.

Managed to miss it as well, lucky me.

>>13966325
Good luck.
>>
>>13966336
318 don't count though. They're the red-headed E36. My entire point is if you can spend 3k on a car, but not 4k, you won't be able to afford to run an E36. Sure it's not modern BMW expensive, but it's more expensive than most cars.

>>13966345
Not really. Those engines are loaded with electronics and shit you shouldn't be fucking with.
