Today I finally got my car insured AND registered! I'll finnally be able to drive it around legally.

And if anyone is interested, the cheapest insurance for my Z was with Geico. $60.21 a month, which is way cheaper than I thought it was going to be.

While at the DMV there was this sweet 260Z, so I parked right next to it and took this picture. I talked to the owner as he was walking out of the DMV, turns out he owns 4 cars total. All of them are Datsun 260Zs. He checked out mine and I checked out his. Honestly, every classic Z owner I have met has been deeply in love with their Z and was just a nice person.

I love ya guys.

finally, thank goodness!

My family and I literally just got back from a four day trip to visit my grandmother in southern california (we buried my grandfathers ashes).

But remember Stockton blvd and Fruitridge blvd, the super dangerous section of road you drove on to drop me off? Yeah, two cars were on fire there when we drove back.

Should I buy my uncle's Datsun ? Pic related, don't know the year but it used to run about 4 years ago until transmission fucked up, its been sitting in the street for a while and the floor is full of rust, would the restoration cost too much? Also anyone know the exact model and year?

>You see the 280zx on elm Street? There's also an Asian guy who has a very nice 510

Can't say I've seen ether of those. I'll keep and eye out for them though, I love spotting local Datsuns.

Wait, are you talking about that all black 280zx? I've seen that once a couple months ago while I was driving to work, it looked clean as hell.
>>
I'm not sure if this is allowed in this thread, but what do you guys think about the Y30 Cedric?

I might buy one with the LD28 diesel, but parts availability worries me.
>>
>>13879777
>I'm not sure if this is allowed in this thread
basically everything is allowed in this thread, we're all chill. You could even talk about Toyota's and we won't bag on ya.

As for the Y30 Cedric, I don't think I can help ya there; I really don't know enough about them to give an accurate assessment.

But I will tell you that the LD28 is the best L series engine ever made, parts quality wise. Forged everything (except pistons), and all it really needs to go 1 million miles plus is maybe new rod bolts from ARP.

Parts availability isn't as easy as going to a store, yes, but they are available. But more importantly, I don't see you needing to replace parts all that often.

I love the l28et. I wish I could put that in my 280 with a 5 speed, shit would fly. But its not as easy to just drop in a turbo or a new turbo engine. You have to reinforce everything so the car doesnt breakdown every other day.

the L28ET can be put into an S30 chassis with zero modifications, and the chassis will hold the power with no problem.

The S30 chassis, and especially the 280Z, can hold around 375hp before it needs beefing up. That, coincidentally, is about as much power as you can get out of an L28ET before you have to crack it open and make modifications.

>>13881207
that's wiring trouble right there, if you plan on swapping the engine into something else, get it and part that vehicle out to recoup some of the costs.

not so: throw some decent 225's on, replace the shocks, springs, and bushings (not modifications, just replacements on normal wear items), and it will be tail happy but it will handle quite well.

That's why I want to get an RB20DET. I can get around 275hp to the wheels just with a cheap RB25DET steel turbo and boost adjustment, and it will be more reliable and less expensive down the road than an L28ET.

Did you get the weld on camber or bolt on camber plates? I've been debating getting getting the t3 coil overs for a while now.

Do you think they are worth it vs some new struts, springs & sway bars?
>>
>>13883715
Thanks (guy with copper 260z)

I'll probably pull the carbs in a few weeks and refurbish and clean them...they probably needed it as I smoke tested the intake system and the throttle rods leaked out the bushings a bit.
>>
>>13887944
>I smoke tested the intake system and the throttle rods leaked out the bushings a bit.
good luck. You'll need a good drill press, drill bits, a set of punches, a micrometer, a set of files, and some more tools.

Here's some stuff for you to read:

http://www.mossmotoring.com/rebushing-su-carburetor-bodies/

this is interesting

http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/40433-su-mod-sealing-worn-throttle-bushings/

this is a good video demonstrating what you'll need to do; I suggest you use delrin or another composite and not brass, due to the micro welding (the throttle shaft is brass, so brass on brass is a no-no)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQykLNCcc0U

Mind you, all these articles aren't all datsun specific, so measurements should be considered wrong. Take your own measurements.
>>
>>13887922

They are weld on though I only have them in front, I need to get some for the rear.

The are awesome in my opinion but for the same price as the whole setup you can get one of the better weld in kits.
>>
>>13888766
If you were to do it over again, would you do the DIY cut-and-welded strut tube S13 coil over option? It's like $600 when all said and done, with all four corners.

http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/87193-just-finished-s13-coilovers-into-s30/
>>
>>13888814
I would do it again but I wouldn't cheap out on the struts like I did. I built mine back when you couldn't get Tokico Illuminas as therr was no US distributor. Don't go 240sx coils they are completely wrong for a Z which weighs a lot less. I know there is a set of Megan's for the Z you can get through McKinney Motorsports. You can also get BC coils through JPN Garage. Both of those are comparable in price.
>>
>>13888873
>$1,200
Yeah no. That's better spent on brake upgrades and better tires.

Also, there's only a 200lb difference between the S30 and the S13.
>>
>>13888966
The weigh distributions are still different.Either you pay the money now or later. I fought with that myself.

The stock brakes are fine even when you add a little power. A better suspension is a good start, that and tires.
>>
>>13889014
having the ability to stop is much more important than having the ability to handle.

The weight distributions really aren't that different; the stock weight distribution on an S13 is 47/53, while stock weight distribution in a '72 240Z is 48/52.

And when you take into account that when you put an SR20 into an S13 (like the 180SX had), the weight distribution becomes an almost perfect 50/50. A lot of people using S13's with SR's use coil overs with great success, and they have an even larger 3% gap to fill than an S30 would, it only having to change 2%.
>>
>>13888966
even if you were to use s13 coilovers would you really want to use the same struts? and what about camber plates?

It comes out to basically the same price as GabbZ maybe even more. You can get the ground control DIY coilovers for like 450 which are the same as T3's.
>>
>>13889070
I am just saying the stock brakes are pretty damn good.

You clearly already talked yourself into the 240sx coilovers, so do it. It's not a bad option just not one I would prefer. You cant do that swap for $600 when the adapters themselves are over $400. All I am saying is do it right the first time and you wont have issues down the line $1200 is cheap for a set of coils on a Z.
>>
>>13889070
The brakes are fine on early z's

>bu, bu, but muh drum brakes

unless you're doing a wilwood rear conversion it's not worth it. Yeah it's dated, but they work really well. The ZX or maxima conversions are utter crap and you won't even notice a difference. The Z is already light, with front disks.
>>
>>13888966
>brake upgrades
A rear disc conversion is all you really need unless you're actually racing the car and it's really more for convenience than anything else.
For just tearing up the twisties, some stickier pads and MAYBE drilled/slotted rotors will be sufficient.

If you're that concerned with cheap coilovers, JPN also sells a set made by CX Racing for about $900. They appear to be identical to the BC setup.
I plan on getting BCs only because I'm familiar with their product whereas I have no experience with CX and cannot attest to their quality.
>>
>>13889103
>would you really want to use the same struts?
I really don't see it as that big of a deal: it's not as world ending as you think. It would function fine, and I guarantee you handle better than the car with stock suspension.

As for camber plates, they're not rocket science, I could fab them if I wanted to.

yes you can: cut the strut tubes so it's only about an inch high, slide the coilover perch on, weld it, and assemble. Total price: $0.70 for welding wire or $15 to take it to my buddies shop and have him TIG them.

>>13889124
>I am just saying the stock brakes are pretty damn good.
they are not bad, yes. But they can be vastly improved, especially with the Toyota calipers. Two pot calipers are much better than the one pot stockers.

>>13889154
>>bu, bu, but muh drum brakes
I want those things gone so fast you don't even know. Drum brakes are a pain to mess with. And I've seen lots of success with the ZX rear disks, actually.
>>13889160
>A rear disc conversion is all you really need unless you're actually racing the car and it's really more for convenience than anything else.

exactly.

But my overall point being: I will first invest in brakes before I invest in handing, and since I need new shocks and springs quite badly, I'll go with a cheap set of coil overs to tide my over. I really don't think it's gonna be that bad.
>>
>>13889347
>Frankenstein your shit bucket all you want, I'll do mine my way.
go ahead, I'm not telling you to do shit.

And my car is currently a rusted to shit shell partially stripped in a garage, while I have a clean, low rust shell waiting for everything to be swapped over (that includes wiring, glass, complete drive train, brakes, etc).

It is a true shit heap. Hence, I don't feel bad with throwing less than perfect application coilovers on it.

Also,

>80k miles

Less work and even cheaper than coils.
>But muh clearance
The stock struts can fit an 8''+/-0 wheel with a 225 tire. If you're really paranoid, you can roll the fender lip to make extra sure the tire doesn't rub.

the early 70's to early 80's Nissan F series of transmissions are the only ones available that bolt onto the L-series blocks without adapter plates.

>I'll go with a cheap set of coil overs to tide me over
and I just found out that won't happen: my father pointed out this lil' setup, which meets my needs/wants of a 1"-2" drop and better than stock handling.

http://brandcarparts.com/shocks-struts/select-by-car/datsun/280z/1975-1978-nissan-datsun-280z-stagg-shocks-struts-and-vogtland-lowering-springs-kit-1-25-drop.html

(I'm posting a link to the 280Z setup since the Stagg shocks for the 240Z aren't in-stock currently, but when they are they're the same price)

It's $300 for Vogtland lowering springs and good Stagg shocks, which isn't bad at all. The extra $200 I save is enough to buy a full car urethane bushing set. Major savings, great improvements in handling, and simple bolt in install without cutting.

It's not coilovers, but it will definitely do the job for now.

Also '76er, when you want to upgrade your shocks and springs, this would be a great set.

that's a lot of rust... conservative WAG estimate is around $1,000 to fix including tools needed to do it (assuming you do the labor)

Personally I'd look for something a little less rusty, and a coupe if you can.

Here, this is decent, it's cheaper, it's a coupe, and it's not that far.

>>
Holy shit I'm gone for like two days and there's actual discussion happening and shit. Good stuff.

>>13890165
Sweet tits, cheap and effective. I like it. I'll add those to me to do list.

What are even the advantages of having coilovers anyway? From what I understand you can lower or raise the car easier, is that all?

whats everyones favorate exhaust system for a Z?

Next on my list is getting new shocks/suspension, 5 speed, and new tires.
After that though, I'm getting a cold air intake and I want a pretty good exhaust. But I dont know shit about exhausts.
>>
>>13893887
yeah but the plant growing in front of the headlight lowers confidence about the rest of the car, and there's no telling how much interior work will eventually be needed to be done. I'll text him about it though, maybe it only needs a new fuel pump/filter?
>>
>>13894470
Space saving, lighter, usually interchangeable parts of you but multipiece coils, ease of access, easier to setup and dual in with adjustments. That's just a few.
>>
>>13894470
>What are even the advantages of having coilovers anyway
better adjustability, you can more easily change camber, they're smaller in size so they allow larger wheels inside the stock wheel well, etc

>whats everyones favorate exhaust system for a Z?
I personally like to piss people off and I'm poor as shit, so my exhaust is going to be a straight pipe with a glass pack (primitive muffler).

But I've read that this is a good cheap exhaust setup:

"From the exhaust manifold back you have 2.5" pipe with china Magnaflow knockoff offset muffler on the end. Use the side with the most offset as the exit and rotate the body into the rear skirt/wheel well to hide it. Then a knock off non-louvered glass pack where the old resonator used to fit. You will have nice sounds and no drone or rasp, and it will be very inexpensive."

That was advice I saw from this dude, who has a very similar exhaust setup. Sounds awesome to me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaVwabeBUy8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWTZzbPGtlE

I'm not an exhaust expert, I'm still learning. I'm most uneducated about suspension, to be honest.
>>
>>13894583
>the plant growing in front of the headlight lowers confidence
......okay, yeah, I have to agree with you there.

Expect rust repairs on both. But this one will be a coupe at least, and it's less expensive. Think of the price savings as like getting a set of new struts and a whole car bushing kit.
>>

>>13896346
he's thinking about $7,000 for a rough cast head with minimal machine work done, and cams. The rest can be machined at a shop, and the head components sourced from a K20.

So, it's probably gonna be like $11,000 for a sick as fuck DOHC head for the L-series; cheaper if group buys are made. I know of guys that already dump $20,000 in the L series.

That is much, MUCH cheaper than the fuckin' $35,000 OS Giken rough casting with zero machining.

On the negative side it looks like it'll have to be almost completely repainted. If I pay for it to be repainted should I just stick with yellow?
>>
>>13899956
Maybe, or maybe he just doesn't know it off the top of his head. It could honestly just be sitting there.
And if it does have back fees, haggle the shit out of him: "You know, I like the car, but it has X dollars in back fees, and it obviously didn't pass smog when you had it, so it's gonna cost X dollars to fix (normally around $250 for a catalytic converter), so I really can't offer more than X dollars". Go hard on this.

>pay for it to be painted
Listen. I'm gonna be frank with you. Not trying to be rude, but to be real.

Regardless of what vehicle you buy, you're gonna have to get new paint on it. Why? Because you're gonna be doing rust repairs, and that means cutting body panels out and welding in new ones. Normally ones that have paint on them.

So, you have two options: one, shop and wait for the perfect vehicle to come up, one that has already been gone through.

Or two, repair the rust and have it painted.

And secondly, why would you pay for someone else to paint it? A decent paint job is expensive as fuck, more than the car is worth. Meanwhile, for only a couple hundred dollars you can apply a tough as nails paint job to it that looks sweet as tits if you just put a little bit of work into it.

Unless you don't have a driveway to park in, paint the damn thing yourself. Let me find the trusted and true copy pasta for you...

The patent pending Dat L24 'Valspar Enamel G.O.A.T. Paint Job for Non-Plebs ©'

>If you're painting a car in the DIY mindset, what you want is a single stage, oil based enamel paint.

>Like for instance Valspar Tractor and Implement Enamel.

Ratings back then were SAE gross BHP, measured with no alternator, fan, A/C, etc.
A freshly rebuilt L24 will put out around 120-125 net BHP.

L26 and L28 advertised power figures are net BHP so they really were making 160/170 BHP, respectively.

He was talking about the welds I believe.
>>
>>13923845
Yeah. Specifically, the excessive discoloration on the flange welds for pipes 1 and 4 (from the right).
>>
Heat soak refers to the bluing around the welds.

As you apply more heat in one area the surrounding metal discolours.

a thin band of blue either side of the weld indicates the right amount of heat was used.

if you have a flat surface (like the mounting face of a manifold) and the bluing reaches the edge there is a significant chance of warping.

so the far right weld on the image probably warped the metal at the end

>>13945741
I'd probably go with an RB20DET swap. With a new oil pan made from a guy on HybridZ (it's about $250 for it, and they're really nice), they bolt right in, even the stock driveshaft connects. You only need three extra wires I believe. It's about $1,250 all said and done. They make lots of power, and parts are inexpensive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKg27CBUdkM
>>
>>
>>13945821
Is the stock efi really so bad? It seems like itd run better with it. Is it just shit because of the age?
>>
>>13947134
yeah, shit because of the age.
If you want you *can* replace all the old injectors, vacuum lines, etc, and clean aaaaaaaall the contacts on the ECU and related wiring, and it will run fine. But that takes a lot of money and a lot of time.
>>
>>13879952
I went ahead and bought it, and it's a lovely car. Over half a million kilometers on the clock, and most of the electrics work and the engine runs like new.

But there's a problem with the tachometer, since it only works at above 3500 rpm or so. Any ideas what would cause this?

Also, it appears that this car was never produced with a limited-slip diff, but are there any bolt-on LSD diffs? I couldn't find any info in the car about the rear end/axle model though. How can I identify it?
>>
>>13947932
to be honest mate I don't know how to help you there, since I don't know how much from the S series of vehicles interchanges.

But I can say that Nissan made a big effort to have as many parts as possible be interchangeable, to save costs. So there's a good chance the 300ZX Shiro LSD might fit, or the 200SX turbo R200 LSD might fit. Gonna have to do your research, though.
>>
>>13948052
Well, it has a solid rear axle, but there was no drivetrain info on the VIN/info plate on the firewall, and there are no markings on the differential casing or axle.
>>
>>13949613
>Remove diff carrier
>Measure ring ID
>Find LSD/torsen carrier that will fit ring
>Swap over necessary parts
>Install
You now have an LSD.
>>
>>13949721
You make it sound simple, but I don't know a whole lot about differentials, even though I disassembled a wrecked diff once.

Will I need to shim the diff or adjust any clearances then? Everybody has horror stories to tell about diff rebuilds gone wrong, with the gears always whining afterwards.
>>
>>13949900
Probably, but as for as going from non-LSD to LSD, all you need is the carrier (the bit that holds the spider gears/clutch packs). I can't say how much info you'll find about the Cedric but somebody somewhere must know something and in your journey for information, you'll learn a lot about your car that you never even thought you should know.

Did some digging for the hell of it. The Y30 got Nissan's H190 rear axle like literally everything else so basically any rear end part from any old Nissan with a solid rear end will swap over.
If you can find an LSD for an old Hardbody, for example, it should bolt right in.
However, different applications got different spline counts an the axles so to avoid any headaches, I'd get corresponding axles to go along with whatever diff carrier you find.
>>
>>13950212
Thanks for the info, anon. I have a Nissan Vanette Cargo limited-slip diff + solid rear axle lying around, but the axle itself has leaf springs and drum brakes unlike the Y30 which has coil springs and disc brakes. I'll have to try and see if I can install the Vanette diff into the Y30.
>>
>>13950326
Good luck, Anon, and take your time.
>>
>>13950326
if the diff has the same axle spline count, you should be able to swap it right in.
>>
>>13947169
What carb setup would be better? Im willing to invest the time for triple weber carbs, but i also think doing a 4 barrel would be cool, from what ive read though using a 4 barrel carb is too much for a 2.8l engine but i would prefer the simplicity of maintaining it. What do you reccomend?
>>
>>13952001
well, triple webers are quite expensive and can be a pain in the ass to tune.

And as for the four barrel, it really comes down to what carb you use.

If you use the Holly 360cfm carb, you should be good to go. Quite reliable as well (just make sure to use the Arizona Z Car intake, and not the Carter: the AZC intake performs much better in the low end, and you wnt that for the street.

But if I had the choice, and I had the money for triple webers, I would actually go for a bolt on 4 barrel EFI setup like the MSD Atomic EFI or Holly Terminator EFI. The next gens of each setup are coming out soon, so they're gonna be having some fire sales on the current gen stuff. If you use the Arizona Z car intake, shit would be so cash.

Now, nobody has done this to a Z yet, but I see no reason as to why it couldn't work, since the systems can work on something as small as a 1.0l engine.

I'd expect a drastic improvement in idle, cold starting abilities, fuel efficiency, and overall reliability. You'd also be able to run E85 without much trouble (well, with fuel system upgrades like new fuel lines and E85 capable fuel pump)
>>
>>13952001
Sidedrafts > downdraft, always. They're not that hard to synchronize if you actually take the time to learn and get the proper tools.
If you want Webers, get OERs. Exactly the same with a couple modifications for ease of adjustment.
>>
>>13952154
I can probably manage to get the amount id need for the triple, but i had never thought about actually using a newer efi system, I will try to do that if i can. I think it would be great. Thanks for all the help guys, once i get the car ill be sure to come back with pics of it before/while im wrenching on it.
>>
>>13947169
That's like saying building a custom PC takes too long. Cleaning an EFI system is ez with knowledge and you only spend like $50-100 refurbishing it then you have a more reliable system than non-rebuilt carbs.
>>
>>13947932

L-series engines are very sturdy, and they are almost always yanked from cars not due to malfunctions, but due to engine swaps. So for $250, that engine should be solid, and if not, it's only $250.

WHAT THE FUCK THAT'S EXPENSIVE
Dude, you could buy a simple bearing/seal/pistons n' rings kit, and with a trip to the machine shop for it to be decked and honed, and you'd be good to go for the bottom end.

And for the top end, a quick cleaning, new or at least straightened valves, a valve seat lapping, and new springs and you should be good to go as well.

All said and done, that should only be like $500-$700 including tools and machining. That's a huge saving, plus you'll learn.

You'll want the "How to Rebuld Your L-Series" book.
