I drove a Turbo NA miata on a sprint track 2 days ago.
Shit was fantastic, wasn't a huge turbo but it meant it was still revvy and happy but with a huge power boost in the mid range.
It was still really linear as well.

The only factor in which that car was worse than an N/A version is that it uses more fuel.

Forced induction doesn't make a peppy responsive engine less responsive or peppy, it just gives it a power boost at certain rev ranges which by comparison makes the times when its off boost and behaving like it did when it was N/A seem super shit and slow.

That's not how lag works. How fast an engine revs up while in gear has to do with how much power it makes and how much load it's under. How fast an engine revs up in neutral had to do with how much power it makes and how much inertia it has. Lag refers to how quickly an engine responds after receiving a throttle input. If you open the throttle and it takes half a second for the engine RPM to increase, that's an unresponsive engine. If it responds in only 2 ms, that's a very responsive engine. You can identify grossly unresponsive engines by driving them, but typically you have to use telemetry to compare throttle position vs change in acceleration (jerk) in neutral.

To a lot of people a car is just a machine that pumps out benchmarks like comparing graphics cards.
