So I've been thinking of getting my first s-chassis... s13 or s14.

They are easily available in my area. I've been 'shopping' for the past 6 months or so, but I'm having a hard time picking one. A part of me is like "make the mature choice, choose the most stock, unmodified one as possible", but another part of me is like "but this one has a swapped sr20, and modified suspension, race seat, blah blah, so it'll be more fun."

The purpose of buying this car is purely for enjoyment-- comfort and convenience are %0 a factor. I want it to be a bit ridiculous, and feel like a toy, not a commuter. But I also don't have a garage where i can just stash it if it breaks down, and I don't have endless $$$ to throw at it if shit keeps fucking up-- so reliability is unfortunately still a bit of a factor. I'm also not very mechanically inclined. I don't mind basic maintenance, but i'd rather be out driving than shopping for new parts online and spending hours working on my car. Buying a stock car and then modifying it into my dream car isn't something i'm that interested in doing... i'd rather just buy someone else's hard work and tweak that to my liking.

So my question is, have any of you purchased an s-chassis with a similar mindset? Whether you chose stock or modified, do you regret your decision?

Is there an intelligent way to buy a modified s-chassis without being a mechanic and/or having owned and worked on a few?

Also, I'm in New York, tell me which one I should buy: http://newyork.craigslist.org/search/cto?sort=date&hasPic=1&searchNearby=1&nearbyArea=451&nearbyArea=349&nearbyArea=249&nearbyArea=561&nearbyArea=167&nearbyArea=250&nearbyArea=168&nearbyArea=170&nearbyArea=354&nearbyArea=17&nearbyArea=356&nearbyArea=278&nearbyArea=276&nearbyArea=286&nearbyArea=173&auto_make_model=240sx&auto_transmission=1

abused and neglected but unmolested fag here

im unsure whether a bearing is going out or it has a lifter tick

sounds fine when i rev it but at idle it tick or knocks

also think i have chain slap

i have a timing kit here but dont know whether to use it or not fucking shit

also 0w-40 good for it? im in commiefornia

>>
>>13944514

>>13944754
its my second one more or less the first an ex bought for me but ended up using it (and recking it) herself

anyways both were and are fun as fuck stock and the curernt one im fixing up will be my daily driver with the occasional weekend night touge car with suporting "mods"

but yeah mines was unmolested but not mainetaid and im just throwing money at it to make it reliable at the moment

if i had the means i would pull the engine and do a complete check up and servicing since they really are bullet proof both ka24e and de but only if the issue is caught before hand
>>
>>13944754
What engine? I'm guessing KA24DE unless you state other wise. First thing is KA don't have lifters, they're cam over bucket designs. Likely chain slap or a broken top end guide(which are unnecessary). At the very least you can pull off the valve cover and check to see if you have the upper chain guides still. If you do you can remove them with out issue.

Also I'd run 10-30 or 5-30, 0 weight is too thin.

Ah the single cam, different design on that head there are no upper chain guides. However some quick googling says it could possibly be the chain. Although that single cam does have lifters as well

i googled that shit too ovor these few days and watched and re-watched countless videos so its either lifters or the chain still going to check the chain guide and tensioners just in case

So I'm trying to track down what's causing my reverse lights not to work on my s13. I've already ruled out the switch and the bulbs so I need to test the power going through the fuse. The problem is I have no one to help me and I can't keep the car on and in reverse without having the clutch in. So I'm wondering if anyone knows if the reverse lights go on even if the engine isn't on? Is it possible that a kind anon could check?

I'm certain if you have the key turned to the "on" position, the farthest one before starting it when all the dash lights turn on, the reverse lights should come on when in reverse.

If it's clean I don't see what the problem is. In Australia that would be a great price for a manual stock S14. The wheels are decent. It's been around the block but if he's got a proper service history it still has years of life left in it.

Is it worth it? I'd swap the transmission, but I think it's a good sign that it has an auto, because that means it hasn't been abused.

Also, on the topic of transmission swaps. If I were to turbocharge a 240, and was pushing out like ~300hp, would I need to put a different transmission in it? Would a T56 be able to hook up to the KA?

If your plan is to build it far off from stock, get one that's pre molested.
Instead of buying a clean stock 240 & molesting it myself, I picked up a crashed track car that had minimal damage that was reversible & a SR20, so I could sell off the shit I didn't want, & build what I wanted with a clear conscious of not reaping another clean 240
>>
>>13949669
Nope. Just Wangan Warriors, some mx5 events, Japan Classic sunday, and some oldtimer events.
Hate the Dutch "tuning" scene.Mostly retards with riced out golfs, peugeots and civics.
>>
>>13949839
Hehe yep. Only guys I know who are into tuning have 206's with airride and retarded bumpers
>>
>>13949880
It's very similar to the vw scene in the US. Its wheels and a drop(usually on air). And then they go around saying built not bought and that they are tuners.
>>
>>13950572
I think stance is a result of no accessible racetracks and events, for the most part
>>
>>13951416
I completely agree. If we had more venues, heck even more parking lot legal events, more people would rather do that then go for street cred bs. I also blame the American culture as a whole. All we care about is status and which black guy can throw a ball in the hoop at a higher percentage then the other black guy. Resulting in kids trying to make their cars as cool as possible without much work, like wheels and airride only.
>>
>>13951666
Where I live there's hundreds if not thousands of high powered cars but no easily accessible track, yet people wonder why there's so much speeding tickets being handed out. So why even bother, it's easier and less risky to sit in a parking lot and look at a hellagay swagfucked #slammed car.
>>
>>13945537
so i have a single cam. blew the hg after putting a turbo on it. in replacing the headgasket you have to take the cam sprocket bolt off and keep the chain held at tension right.. so after putting everything back together i put the cam tool through the holes in the sprocket, went to turn the wrench to tighten the bolt, thought i moved the cam. moved it back like, 2mm proceeded to tighten. ran like dog shit for 2 days before the engine locked up. im pretty sure i bent a few valves.

question is,...aside from not being retarded, how do i not do that again? is there a way to keep tension on the cam or something so you know you're not moving it while you tighten the cam sprocket bolt?

>>13952917
that pic is actually a kade, so if youre looking the sprocket in that pic, thats the idler sprocket. im not familiar with the sohc.
but if youre saying what i think you did, is when you tightened the cam sprocket, you turned the cam which caused the valves to hit the pistons, correct?
the way to do that is to use a wrench to hold the cam in place. idk about SOHC, but on the DOHC, theres a spot for it right after the front cap. see how it has the flat spots towards the front, like a regular nut?
but since i dont know the kae, you be better off seeing if its in the fsm or just googling how to time a kae
>>
>>13949419

looks pretty clean bro, that's a great price too (looks like they just listed it at book price because they didn't know about rice tax). Seems like it's the original owner too. If you're okay with it being a convertible, I'd jump on it before it's gone.
>>
>>13949419
A t56 is a 600hp+ turbo. If you want around the 350hp mark a gtx3076 with a .73 rear housing would do the job. Around 300hp would be a td05 size, maybe go a hks gtsr if you can afford them. Then just get a manifold to suit, most likely be a t3 flange for a 300+hp car.

>pro tip: don't buy stainless manifolds, steampipe is much better suited to high heats and pressure.

There's a pair of these for sale around the corner from where I live, 18×10 -20. They sit just outside of the gaurds on a coupe with 50mm over fenders so thinking I might be able to get away with my 30mm over fenders on my 180sx. At the moment I'm running a 9" +8 and they fit easy under my rears. He wants $1700 and i'm not sure I like 18's on s13's but they are pretty sweet. It should have been as simple as making sure piston 1 was at top dead center, putting the gears back on and lining up the chain markings to the gear markings. It shouldn't have been hard nor given you issues.

Why anon

America never gets the good cars :(
>>
>>13958842
its also stock metal with a moderate pull. im sure under 30mm overfenders you can get rid of some of the camber. see if hell let you do a test fit
>>
>>13958842
Sorry rpf1's are like $1500 a set, was reffering to meisters

>>13958851
Not really stance if you can fit it under your gaurds without retarded amounts of camber. The more tyre I can get on the ground the better

>>13958865
I should be able to fit them, still not a big fan of 18's though. Might be a good reference for what kind of wheels I can fit without going too retarded.

Was offered a 1990 Toyota supra turbo (mk3) for my s14. Both cars are auto both cars are low mile low owners. Mine has a clean title his is rebuilt. In really considering it because Its such a clean supra but I know that I can make my s14 cool and fun for much less money. Opinions?

I would keep the S14, having owned one. Mk3's are really cool and perform nicely once you dump a shitload of money into it.

i found a new use for the subwoofer i took out of my car
>>
>Find the bottom of my front fender bubbling
>wtf
>Pull apart the fender lining, check inside
>Mounds of dirt and twigs gods know how old or how long they've been in there
>Rusted my fender from the inside out

Now I have to source two new front fenders.
>>
>>13963993
The reason I want to go through with the trade is because my car isn't necesarily the nicest car on the planet. Its a 95 so it has the gross grey/blue interior, no radio, needs both new fenders because the older gentleman who owned it previously ran over it on one side and dented the other badly. Also needs brakes and a new windshield.

Ouch. No need to be a prick. Just asking for some advice or pros and cons of both situations. Man, all previous threads were supportive until you showed up.
