one reason is that the resale on VW's is pure shit and it is only going to get worse as the possibility of huge fines and continuing legal problems push VW close to bankruptcy. the stigma of VW's overt criminality is going to depress their value for quite some time. you will be looking for another car in a few years as your VW is not a particularly desirable model, and the residual value will be next to non existent. If you had used that money to purchase a comparable car from any other manufacturer you would have more residual value to offset the cost of your next car.

and honestly, the GLI is not even one of the better cars in its class.

The vast majority of VW owners will drop $25k on one instead of a comparable Asian marque simply due to the fact that they bought German.

All the while it will be prone to problems while the Asian ride will get well towards 200k miles with minimal problems. The German car buyer will think that their peers will be impressed that they bought into the "german build quality," while in reality no one gives a shit.
