Roughly how many dollars a month does insurance go up if you get in a fender bender? Say damages are under 1000$.
>>
>>13899046
They'll raise it pretty considerably.

I got a 15 miles an hour over the limit and they raised prices ~$30 a month. No other violations and I'm a 22 year old guy with 4 cars.

Would it be good or bad to buy a 5-speed 2.3L Mercedes-Benz 1984 190E (8V NOT the 16v Cosworth) with ~117,000 miles on it for $4,000? Four owners and quite a bit of paperwork and receipts. Interior is roughly 8/10 and exterior is also about 8/10. No rust. Price too high or is it reasonable?

I've always heard that if you're parked level or downhill, leave it in 1st. If you're facing uphill, use reverse.

My 1st is higher than reverse (as is normal, some exceptions I'm sure), so why use reverse? Does the engine somehow turn easier in the opposite direction to normal?

It's hard to tell, that audio a shit.
Take a long screwdriver and put the tip on the case of the alternator and put your ear on the plastic handle. You're listening to the bearing. If it's a smooth quiet hum it's ok. If it sounds loud, harsh etc then the bearing is shot and you need to replace it.

Direction of turning won't change. Remember your engine turns the same direction no matter if you're in a forward or reverse gear. Now, what I've noticed in my car is that for some reason first gear holds while reverse the car creeps forward. I don't know why but the clutch slowly slips and the car rolled. Do a test and see if anything works better than the other. Make sure to do it on a steep hill with your e brake off and wheels strait. When you do park for real turn your wheels so that if your car does roll it rolls into the curb instead of out into the street.
>>13904201
If you need the truck as a DD then don't, find a another truck with stick.

Otherwise get a Haynes manual and find forums that are related. I'm sure someone else has done the swap and has a step by step.

Your shitbox is experiencing poor acceleration.

What is the first thing you investiage?
>>
>>13904475
>engine turns the same direction

Well, yes, but since the direction you're "moving" is the opposite of what it should be, it would try to move in reverse (IE if you're in first on a downhill, engine turns the right way. On an uphill, it would try to turn the backwards way, but in reverse gear it would turn the right way).

I can see how it might be a clutch thing though, too. Makes sense that it works better in one direction than the other with wear and such.

But is there anything specifically in the engine that restricts "correct direction" motion more than "incorrect direction" motion?

I finally figured out my stereo's no-sound problem when I opened the door panels and saw there were no speakers. I measured the diameter of the speaker hole and it was 4inches. 95 F150, Brake pedal changes travel distance, and increases (3-4 in to engagement point) when engine is below 1500 rpm, but is less (~1in) when in higher revs.

It also has a shorter travel when I'm pressing the pedal rapidly, or after a few pumps and will hold pressure.

Pressing the pedal Brakes and slows down the truck the same regardless of how long of travel the pedal makes, and its been doing this for a week or so, so I don't think its a leak.

Brake Booster, Master cylinder with an internal leak or both?
>>
>>13906528
Ebay guides to what actually fits are not typically accurate.

A 6in may fit but what they're not telling is that you'll have cut a bigger hole.

Find a forum specfic to your car and ask there.

I bought a 1998 Accord EX for $1500 a few months ago. I've been slowly repairing and changing stuff on it. New lock actuators, power window motors, speakers, head unit and hood struts. However, there is one thing I can't fix simply because I don't have any idea how to look for this part.

There is a pop up cover on my cup holder and the latch is broken so it stays open all the time. A very minor problem, but I'd like to replace it if I can. What is this part called and where can I get on.

Took my car in after power steering went out. It also had a small radiator leak.I got it back a week later, and on the bill the major things they replaced were the power steering pump, water pump, and some hoses connecting to the radiator.

A day later my steering is making awful creeking sounds, and after sitting overnight in the driveway the powersteering is working sometimes, but is now making even more horrid noises and mostly feels like it's out. There is the sound of a straw in a near empty drink being sucked through coming from the PS pump, and it intensifies when the wheel is turned.

I check the power steering fluid, and it's an awful reddish-pink melted ice cream look. It also seems to be leaking out from under the vehicle along with with a yellowish fluid that might be radiator coolant but was spread out in a square on the ground under the firewall.

My questions are: Should I expect to pay a large amount more to the shop on top of the $1100 I already payed after I take it in again on Monday? This isn't the first time something like this has happened with this shop.

What in the name of God seems to be wrong with this car?

>>
>>13910646
96 Bronco. 5.8L
>>
>>13910686
You're taking a damn bronco to the shop?

Those are EASY to work on
>>
>>13910686
The power steering pump is notorious for going bad in those. On top of that the front ends experience an accelerated wear cycle where the tie rods and bushings have to be replaced. Fluid leaks accelerate the degradation of the bushings. Parts are cheap but the labor will be expensive.
>>
>>13910696
I was going to work on it myself, but the shop owner is friends with my family, and I wanted to see if I could bring my car in without it coming back with more problems like the last two times. Only reason I'm bringing it back now instead of doing it myself is because I don't know if the shop fucked it up.

>>13910714
That was the case here. $300 in parts, $800 in labor. I was alarmed though when they charged me $40 for an oil change that I already performed myself a few weeks prior. I feel disgusted having to take it back in, and my main concern is if there is a possibility of the shop giving me some form of discount if they caused this.
>>
>>13910769
well I'd say they never fixed the problem to begin with. Find a reputable mechanic and have him look at it to get a second opinion. Take it back to the shop and tell them they didn't fix the problem. If they don't want to give you a massive discount or do it for free take it back to the other mechanic and pay him to do it. The only explanation I can comeup with is that there is a rusty connection somewhere in fluid lines. That "sipping" sound could be from a bad seal on the hose going immediately into the power steering pump. It could be sucking either oil or rust into the power steering system.

If that is the case you're pretty fucked and all the power steering lines and related parts need to be replaced.
>>
>>13910845
It did seem to be leaking from that hose.

This happened before when I brought it in to fix the radiator. They told me they couldn't find any leak, but when I brought it home, idling it in the driveway showed where the leak was immediately, and it came back with the check-engine light on permanently, and the over-drive light flashing.

Also noticed the cap on the PS pump is the same cap from the original pump.

When I bought my XJ a little while back, it came with a roof basket. It mounts onto the stock roof racks by 4 studs coming off of the 4 corners of the basket itself. They go around the stock racks, then you use a metal plate that slides over the studs, sandwiching over the stock racks, and bolts over the studs to hold it all in place. The basket probably weighs a good 70-80 pounds. How bad of an idea is it to put this thing on my Jeep that I actually take offroading? I'd like to use it to keep a spare in so I don't lose any cargo space inside the Jeep, but I feel like this thing isn't going to be too secure on the roof, and even if it is, I feel like it might rip the stock racks off once it starts bouncing around.
>>
>>13911686
it absolutely must not bounce around on your roof.
that thing needs to be really rigid
>>
>>13907789

I'd start at the break booster. If it doesn't have a leak i wouldn't suspect the master cylinder.
>>
>>13908701

Taking the valve covers off might not get you enough access to the chains. IIRC there should be very little to no play at all in any position of the chain except for the side with the tensioner.
>>
>>13911704
The basket itself is solid, I'm just worried about how it mounts to the stock racks. Most baskets I see on XJs are mounted to the rain gutters, which seem to be pretty solid.

You mention lighter than original chassis, what car is it in or do you just mean "weight reduction"...

original ecu?
>>
>>13913018
they would add a few sensors for data logging however the wideband 02 is what we would be looking at for lean/rich running.

if you have money to burn i would highly recommend the purchase of a wideband 02 sensor, (and gauge)

do integras have cold-start enrichment? sometimes this is a secondary injector in the intake manifold that jams open on older cars (4AGE im looking at you) causing a rich running condition.

does the integra ECU have a diagnostic mode? does it return any faults? you can reset the ECU to see if that helps.
>>
>>13913058
a friend rebuilt the motor several years ago, i bought it when his chassis rusted out and put it in a crx so it is significantly lighter. ecu is original, also new map sensor.

a cold start mode exists but i didnt bother wiring it into the swap. i do plan on getting a wideband and getting into properly tuning this thing in but thats at least 6 months in the future.

ecu only shows an electronic load detector fault which should be inconsequential.

i did clean the injectors myself and didnt replace the seals so that is where ill start

What does a "tune up" consist of?
>>
>>13913190
new spark plugs, points, condenser, etc
>>
>>13913190
idk for me its changing the spark plugs, oil and filter, cleaning the intake, maybe sea foaming it if i feel like it

im curious myself
>>
>>13913190
Depends on the context really

Some people will sell it as fresh fluids, filters and brake pads, as well as checking all the service items (belt tensions, balljoints, all the wear and tear crap)

At a 'higher' level its generally getting a car with a tuneable (not all stock ECU's are tuneable, all aftermarket ECU's are) ECU and running it on a dyno.
The dyno tech will then recommend some changes to the cars ignition and fuel map to improve the efficiency / power (which are made) and then the car is run again to see how the changes have worked.

Can be. Don't necc. need Bosch, but if you continue to have streaks try lubing the joint at the base of the wiper assemble by the engine bay. People often forget about it and it only takes a little stiffness to have streaking problems.

Someone gave you a response, but also have you ever heard the term hill starting? If you roll in first gear, Your engine can actually start. It's easiest on diesels. But It can happen to pretty much anything. It's great to be near a hill if your battery dies.
>>
>>13904927
MAF sensor is a likely suspect. Should throw a code.
>>
>>13905311
Yes, why the fuck would you do that?
>>
>>13905311
since the 02 sensor will be reading WILDLY off target the engine will run the injectors rich as fuck.

Since only 2 injectors are actually running this will mean despite dumping fuel into the 'active' cylinders the O2 readings will still be wildly lean.

lots of exhaust popping and back firing, carbon buildup in cylinders, exhaust temps through the roof (goodbye turbo if you have one)
Potentially dead catalytic converter and some muffler damage.

Hey guys, I have a 3.0l v6 99 ford ranger, I want to get a better sound from it, what exhaust set up should I get?
>>
>>13913431
Its kind of ascended into a meme i guess.

The original term was used in reference to carburettors where a "tune up" would involve adjusting the needle set depth or changing the needle all together in order to improve the cars running (either to remedy a problem, or to improve performance)

Recently (last 5-10 years) though i see it as advertising from mom'n'pop garages who seem to just offer a service and a safety/wear check.

(an example would be when i bought my off-roader the previous owner recommended getting a tune as she was running a bit lean, by this he meant fiddling with the carb)
>>
>>13905099
>But is there anything specifically in the engine that restricts "correct direction" motion more than "incorrect direction" motion?

No because the compression in the motor is what is stopping you.

Or maybe it's the transmission? Hmm, I don't really know now.
>>
>>13913634
Wait, I take that back. You can roll in either direction of the transmission is disengaged from the engine. The compression is what locks the wheels.

To make things easier, and this depends heavily on the car in question, you want the engine to mate with the transmission. Motor mounts can be fabbed out of plate steel.

If the engine does not mate to the current transmission, you need to pick an engine+trans combo and see if that will fit in the current engine bay and trans tunnel (if rwd).

This is partially the reason that old american cars and trucks are so popular for hotrodding and engine swaps - the body-on-frame architecture uses very simple geometry for all of the important parts. Two frame rails and the crossmembers in between. Need the tranmission to sit further back? Bang the trans tunnel out a bit and weld a trans crossmember where you need it.

Looking at the cx5 on wikipedia, it seems that your engine swap choices are lacking.

I'm trying to install new u joints with pic related and I cant seem to get the fuckers in.
Tried the hammer and socket method with no luck. Forcing them in with the clamp results in deforming the shaft and yokes to the point that if i manage to get the outside snap rings in, the joint itself is pressed so tight by the end caps that it wont move at all.
wat do? Seems like using a dremel on the holes or end caps might work but I'm sure that's not the correct way to go about it.

>>13919689

It's a common problem. Tolerances are hyper-super fine in a uni assembly, so I would pull it all apart, and clean everything. Again. Go to the extent of running fine sandpaper around all contact surfaces on the yoke and shaft, to ensure a perfect fit. Lightly lubricate all surfaces with engine oil, and attempt assembly again.

Remember - for the uni caps to slide into the rings smoothly, it is more important for them to be dead straight than forced in hard.
>>
>>13919728

Me again - consider a test-fit of caps into rings *without* throwing the whole assembly together. Make sure you know, for certain, at the the caps actually *fit*. I've been supplied incorrect unis before - and sometimes they're so close to right that you can't eyeball the difference.

The shaft has a double cardan on one side and a single on the other so I have to press them in in six places. Ive got one in that fits like a glove and two more that are in a bit snug but seem fine so i think its the right parts.
I used sandpaper to clean the rust off and put a bit of grease on the yokes before i even tried putting them in.
The end caps fit in the holes buts its extremely tight and I believe that pushing them in and pulling the old ones out with so much friction is warping the yokes.

Can someone explain to me how braided steel works? I know of it being used for brake and oil lines, and I believe it's used in larger diameter in exhaust systems to make a flexible joint.

Is there a silicone line inside of it to contain the liquid, or does the steel somehow work alone without leaking fluid or gasses? I can't imagine some kind of rubber inside of a bend in the exhaust system not melting from the heat. What advantages do steel brake lines and the like have over regular silicone ones?

Take a driving lesson and ask the teacher to treat it like a driving test. At the end, they'll point out all your problems, and what won't work for you on the actual test.

For example, you might get points deducted for not following recommended speeds (Like 20km over a speed bump sign at 30km even though the road limit is 50km), fail reversing while staying a meter from your starting angle, palm the wheel and have not have two hands on it at all times unless changing gears, indicate too late, indicate incorrectly coming out of a round about, stop inches over a stop sign line, etc.

Ask your parent questions about rare edge cases and see if they can answer you. Can you cross over a painted island? When entering a round about how do you give way? If they're uming and ahing about it you might like to take a couple of lessons to refine your understanding of the rules.

Because gearing for the street is different than the track.
Racecars have a longer first gear because they don't need to pull away from a stop sign.
It would be a waste of a gear.
When cars leave pit stops spinning their tires like that it's so they don't stall out not because they're fucking around.

Depends on the price. GTIs are nice to drive and perfect daily drivers. If you're A) A student B) Family man and need a second car, the GTI is to go for.

With a clutch I have no issue with it. I just hold the brake pedal with my right foot and lift the clutch until I can take my feet off the brake without rolling backwards. Maybe it's harder if you drive an old car with a weak engine or something.

Kinetic friction creates heat and that heat is your power loss.

It will help but only a little, gummed up oil doesn't dissolve with fresh oil at best youre just washing it out.

The only real way to fully clean an engine is taking it apart.

Using the diesel method will clean out gummed up oil but that's more advanced.

TLDR: not really but you won't do any harm

If I want to put on my winter tires (already mounted on rims) myself, how badly do I need a torque wrench? I can pick one up for $50 on sale right now, which is roughly what it costs for the garage to change the tires for me.

Or should I just use the lug wrench and estimate the torque?
>>

I've honestly never used a torque wrench for changing tires. I've never seen anyone use a torque wrench for changing tires. The shops use big pneumatic wrenchs and I just use a lug wrench and twist like a motherfucker.

Likely the float is not adjusted correctly (too low would lean it out causing lack of power/hesitation, too high may make it flood simulating a stuck closed choke). If memory serves right, the v6 cologne engine came with the Carter YF or YFA carb. Google search how to adjust a carb float.

whats your current level of knowledge?
Channels like Jafromobile offer good knowledge (though specific to 2g and 4g mitsubishi engines alot of the theory is transferable, his channel mostly deals in engine building rather than suspension)

other things like wheeler dealers are a good introduction, in the (only good bit) engineering segments you get a good brief discussion about what makes cars go.

>>13929342
When you buy insurance you are paying someone to deal with collision lawsuits.
if you dont have insurance you have to deal with the lawsuits yourself.

Now if they sue you for damages you will have to make a defense. if they dont you can just ignore it and continue on.

If they declare the collision to their insurance company the insurance company will sue you.

Best I could figure was stand up the front and sit the rear on the jack, with the ramps set up under the frame so if the jack goes they catch the car, but ramps aren't built to take sudden force like that (plus the welds on these fuckers look sketchy as fuck); it all smacks of a trap to my logic.

Well i was going to search for some good underside or jack point pics but you should be able to jack it up from just infront of the rear wheel under the side of the car. then slide an axle stand underneath, then repeat just behind the front wheel. remove both wheels, swap around and repeat on the other side.

>>13929616
That's not quite how a 5 wheel rotate works, you need all four up so you can swap FL to RR etc. I know where the jack points are, I just need all four wheels off the ground at the same time. Might just go buy a second set of jack stands, my theory on tools is if I need it once i'll prolly need it again, so may as well get it.

remove lead from foot. From a stop, just give it a little gas to get it rolling, then gradually increase. brake as little as possible; if this means going slower that is better. If your car gets 2 mpg when you accelerate from a stop if you can increase that to 4 mpg then you've just doubled your fuel economy.

I want to be able to answer phone calls and send text messages hands free while the phone is in a dashboard mount, what android app will allow me to do that?
>>
>>13931389
There is one that come from google that is called "car home" or something like that.
Changes your screen so you only have like 6 or 8 big buttons with the apps you need the most (like navi, phone, messages and whatnot) or with rapid functions (like directly open map of navi, go to a certain chat for whatsapp, answer incoming call, etc).
Makes your phone way more car friendly, especially if you have it on a stand. You just need to tap the bigass button and be done with it.
Not totally hands free, it requires a lot less attention to be used.
There are a bunch of clones on the store if the original car home is not available in your country.

The stock speech-to-text of my phone works good enough if there is not too much background noise, so I don't really know about third party apps for that.

Since you are apparently still alive, keep doing what you have been doing so far.

Increase your safe distance a lot when the road is wet, locking wheels on water is like going on ice.
If you lock wheels and need to avoid an obstacle, brake less or don't brake at all so your car can follow the direction of your wheels and hopefully miss the crash.
If the impact is unavoidable, keep your wheels straight

If thereĀ“s something I feel above average, is controlling my braking, a skill born of how I hated moving around when father was driving, sudden stops and shit that would make me movement sick.

Guess thats why Ive done good so far.

97 Expedition here

So yesterday I took my truck in to brakes plus to get an alignment done. they told me it couldn't be done without $1500 worth of parts and labor for repairs.

Said I needed to replace front L & R upper ball joints, which are part of the upper control arms, front L & R lower ball joints, front sway bar bushings.

I don't think they even really checked out the rear.

fuck. OK so after the sticker shock I thanked him and came home to internet and my haynes manual, this shit doesn't look that bad. youtube vid also mentioned new sway bar end links so i priced a couple of them.

Parts:

The guy spoke highly of MOOG, so that's what I have been pricing out so far

front L & R upper control arms $47 ea

front L & R lower ball joints $24 ea

front sway bar bushings $11 set

stabilizer bar link $6 ea

Tools:

ball joint service kit $105

front end puller kit $60

What grease do I put in the lower ball joints?

Am I missing any other parts i should check out or just change out during this job or specialty tools for this job?
