I'm in your shoes, or I was. Still am though a bit though mostly now it's a bit of envious of all these people I know who had their parents pay for their car and college while I'm sitting here paying my student loans and paid for my vehicles myself.

However now that I'm in a good job, most of those people are still looking for a job either because they have shit work experience, poor work ethic, or picked stupid degrees because they weren't thinking practically. My degree wasn't the best either but it was a hell of a lot better than "Art, Sociology, Music, History, Park and Recreation Management" and etc.

Now slowly even most of those parents will start to expect to not have to support their kids anymore and people like you and I will be used to the real world and many of them will struggle and fail. Then many will also be fine but those are also usually the ones that drown themselves in debt all their lives as well due to never developing a sense of being responsible with money.

I grew up poor. Parents could never afford anything luxurious. Couldn't go out to even get fast food a lot, or a bag of chips down the store, etc. I always had older video games, older tech, etc.

Fast forward to high school in 09, I started my first part time job and was dating this cute chick who was massively spoiled. It was weird to see this. I pulled enough money to get me a 1991 Toyota Camry, pic related. One of the absolute best cars I have ever driven. Had 145K miles on it but I got it for dirt cheap. Was such a fun ride.

Her parents bought her a fucking Hummer. An H2.

Now, I actually travel the US due to business, get my Rental Cars paid for, and now have enough Rewards points with Hertz for multiple free days (hoping to heck they soon get the 2015 MX-5 in so I can drive that).

I bought a corolla for 300$. Shit payed for itself. Its practically intact after 60 thousand miles.

Right now, I'm at a university and there are tons of spoiled kids and rich immigrants from china and the middle east with really nice cars. gtrs, audi r8s, amg mercedes, etc. You got other groups of people who's parents finance a new civic or camry for their kid too. Sometimes it feels like shit to not have a leg up in life right from the start.

That said, I've been busting my ass in an engineering program, knowing that when I'm done, I'll be able to afford a nice ride that I -deserve- to own. In the meantime, my point a to point b car does it job fine. I'd be lying if I said I didn't get jealous or feel envious of others nice cars from time to time. But, when I think about it, I know I'll appreciate the car I get in the future far more than somebody could if it was just given to them. At the risk of spouting off platitude bullshit, I really believe that anything worth having is worth working for.

I don't drive a car, I own a motorcycle, work a dead end shitty job but have an insane amount of fun.

I have a friend who works in a hospital, his family are very well off and he's never had to struggle in life for anything.

When I did my bike training, my stepdad got me a small 125cc bike, some chinese cg125 copy, was £200 of one of his mates, we were a poor family etc but I used it and when I passed my test and it came ot getting a bigger bike, I struggled to save up.

My stepdad once again, knew a guy with a good bike going cheap, mates rates etc, bit knocked off the price, he made me save £100 of my wages each month, hated it at first, but before I knew it I had a fair chunk to buy the bike myself, and I appreciated it more then.

Around the same time, my friends dad had just got himself a brand new car, all paid for by daddy etc.

Years and years later, I hit some real financial trouble, nearly lost everything, lost my bike, but got back on track recently and managed to scrape together enough money to buy a Triumph Speed Four in shit condition, using the leftover money to fix it up over the course of a few months.

It cost very little to repair, did it all myself, had the bike stripped to notihng and rebuilt, it now looks amazing, runs perfectly and has never caused any issues, I also now know the bike inside out and with no money spent sending it to triumph dealerships. I appreciate the bike immsensly seeing as I pretty much built it myself.

My friend who was always bragging about his car and his comforts etc has had a lot of issues with it, daddy is no longer around and all the repairs have to come out of his pocket, and he always takes it to the stealership.

Me and my bike have a near sexual bond, him and his car don't.

Long story short, fuck what others have, find something shit, make it work, make it yours, love it even more!

Use that 94 Civic your dad bought that he lets you use to drive to a job and save up enough money to buy your own 94 Civic that you can use.

Perhaps that was his point in not just giving you the car, so you didn't turn into a spoiled punk who expects handouts.

That's how I was till life caught up with me and hit me in the face.

You won't stop envying them, but if you work for your own stuff, it feels that much better. I remember when I finally got my own vehicle that I could call my very own. It felt that much better to drive my own car than it did to drive any of the cars my parents had. Once this happens to you, you'll stop caring so much about your friends getting handouts and realize that once they need to live in the real world, you'll be a step up from them since you won't need to rely on those handouts.

It doesn't, really. I worked hard for a lot of shit coming up, my family was so poor I worked part time in high school just to help pay the bills. I worked my ass off through college and stuff, got a good job, make decent money now. All of that hard work paying off didn't feel anywhere near as good as winning 5 years worth of salary in the lotto did.
