Sadly my 2003 4L 4x4 Ranger that I bought used at 116K miles needs a new clutch kit, slave, and flywheel. My clutch started feeling really soft about a week ago where the clutch pedal was hitting the floor. I'm going to sparingly drive it when I absolutely need to since I have no alternative vehicle.

Anyways, the shop quoted me at $1,900 after tax which is ridiculous. I'm going to call other shops around the area for a better price. I bought the truck back in April for $4,200 so $2k is not worth it. My options are to get it fixed, which I'm hoping I can do for under $1k, or sell it locally and purchase a new/CPO truck (probably a diesel Chevy Silverado).

The cheapest short term option is to get it repaired, but I'm not sure if that's the best option long term. I originally bought the Ranger because it is known as a reliably daily driver. So far I've had to replace the fuel pump assembly and now I have to replace the clutch. As much as I am against financing a vehicle, which I would have to do if I bought new/CPO, the long term reliability (~10 years) is more important to me in terms of cost to benefit.

Other problems that the mechanic identified were that it needs a new parking brake cable (parking brake doesn't work), half shaft CV assembly, differential pinion seal, and possibly a new wheel bearing (there's a "waw waw waw" noise coming out of one of the right wheels).
>>
.... I don't think the clutch should be that expensive to fix
>>
Do as much work yourself as you can.

also

>Driving a manual transmission vehicle with no working parking brake.

wtf even
>>
>>13888164
That shop is dicks.
You could do it yourself and add a bunch of cool tools to your garage for 1/4 that.
>>
>>13888462
Here's how to do the wheel bearing. Seems easy.

>>
>>13888164

$1900 seems like a fair price to fix all the issues he told you about but seems high for just the clutch.

Trucks are easy mode when it comes to replacing clutches.
>>
the clutch kit is about $250 -300, flywheel is another $100. master cylinder and slave is about $150, so you've got $550 in parts, assuming you don't break anything when you take it apart.

Its a lot of work to do a clutch, especially if you have to do it laying on your back. But it can be done diy in a weekend. If you decide to tackle it,witness mark both ends of both driveshafts, and bleed the clutch when your done, use a vacuum bleeder if you have access to one.

So my friend who rips apart trucks all the time is gonna help me. I'm ordering the parts for the clutch job right now, am I missing anything from my cart?
>>
>>13888164
sell it and get what's sitting next to it
>>
>>13889226

You may as well do the parking brake and wheel bearings too. You might save on shipping but maybe not because Rock Auto has multiple warehouses and a weird logistics system.
>>
>>13889377
i have to do one day shipping to get everything by Friday. I'll end up doing the parking brake later.

Should I replace the rear main seal while I'm at it?
>>
>>13889385

May as well. It's typically recommended when you do a clutch anyway.

Good luck, anon. Learn shit.
>>
>>13889393
I'm scared but excited.
>>
All of that stuff sounds pretty typical of an old truck. Just fix it and keep driving. Those are routine repairs.
>>
>>13888164
Replaced the clutch in my Tacoma for like $400 tops. New clutch disc, paid a machine shop to resurface the fly wheel, new rear main seal for shits n giggles. It's cheap and it's not a hard job, pull the drive shaft off and drop the trans, than it's right there in your face. I'm calling BS on the half shaft assembly btw. If the CV boots aren't torn I give it a 90% chance it's just fine. I've never seen a CV get worn out, I took the stock CV's out of my 1970 beetle with over 200k miles on them and they didn't look any different than the CV's we pull out of our off road toys with 2k miles on them. They either break, or they don't, and if it doesn't make some noise and the wheels still turn I can almost guarantee it aint broke.
>>
>>13889457

the cv boot has a 1-2 inch gash in it. About to order the parts for the clutch install. Gonna be $520 with 1 day shipping. I'll probably pay my buddy $300 to help me and use his shop + tools.

I just did both front wheel bearings on my 04 ranger 4x4 a couple months ago. $60/bearing at rockauto, and along with replacing the shocks, rotors, and pads, it took me 5 hours per side, 10 hours total
>>
>>13889476

Peel the boot off and look for dirt or grime in the CV. Get some CV grease, the consistency is maybe a little thinner than wheel bearing grease. You can disassemble the CV and check for any damage to the balls or the channels they slide in, but I bet there isn't even any. Me and thousands of other off roaders have taken die grinders to the channels the balls slide in and ground them open some for more clearance for the balls to allow more CV angle and thus suspension travel. They still go on forever like this, I've never seen one wear out they just shatter into pieces under extreme loads.
>>
By the way OP,given that it has the 4.0 V6,it should last fucking forever if you do basic maintenance. So,it's not squandering money fixing it,like an investment for the next 5~ years.
>>
>>13889240
The Ranger is objectivity better than that Taco.
And this is coming from a Toyota fuccboi.

> clutch kit from NAPA
$160
> flywheel NAPA
$45
> slave cylinder NAPA
> $130
> Master Cylinder
$160

Clutches are fucking easy to fix on trucks. Stop being a girl.
>>
>>13889597
that's not a tacoma, but okay
>>
>>13889637
Is it a good idea getting a clutch from NAPA? you would think people would want a quality one
>>
>>13889240
Eww no.

>>13889597
That's not a Taco.
>>
>>13889674
that's a second gen tundra

I wouldn't get one of those either
>>
>>13888164
to get the clutch out you'll probably need to take out the exhaust so that you can get the bell off.

the exhaust doesn't come out unless you Take out the main engine mount rail.

The main engine mount rail interferes with 4wd if you have it.

i have had a ford ranger for about a year now, and the thing is literally satan to do any major maintinence to.

Also, there are so damn many seals. In the front wheels alone there are over 10 seals.

Rangers are built like shit.
>>
>>13888164
check that it's not the pedal wearing through the pedal bracket. That was a common issue with these trucks. The pedal widens the rotation point so it hits the floor without really disengaging.

Probably the slave cylender only if the pedal is fine
>>
>>13889665
Napa is a quality parts store.....Napa clutches are Luk clutches. Lots of Mechanics get their parts from Napa.
>>
>>13889648
My bad, the Tacoma has become so pigfat it's hard to tell them apart, especially with the similar fuckugly styling.
>>
>>13888449
Lol you've never got a clutch done then.
Dealer quoted my buddy 2500 for his subaru clutch
And 1800 at a local shop
We ended up just doing it ourselves
>>
>>13888164
Just replace the slave and your pedal wont be as mushy. You dont need a completely new clutch, you just need your hydraulic lines to hold more pressure
>>
>>13889722
>fuckugly styling
compared to the fashionable box that is a ford ranger?
>>
>>13891221
The body style in the OP is superior to the blurbs made nowadays.
Only the first gen of Tacos didn't look like pigfat disgusto shit.
>>
>>13891231
Also, the T100/Tundras never looked good.
Not even once.
>>
>>13891232
compared to what? the f150 it obviously copied?
>>
Also, a ford ranger is what people get when they realize they can't afford the tacoma they wanted

The amount of cocks /o/ would collectively ingest on their path to owning one of these would cause the Earth to implode under she sheer weight of the hot creamy loads alone, resulting in a black hole in preposition rivaling my ex's blown out vagina and distended asshole.

The clutch kit will come with a new pilot bushing

Get the clutch slave and master assembly with the new line.

Get new, driveshaft u-joints, engine rear main seal, trans input seal, output seal, and t case seals while you're in there. Cheap and good insurance from having to crawl under again

At least do the engine rms and trans input so you don't have to pull the trans again later.

Blue loctite the flywheel bolts and u-joint cap bolts.

You will need 2 12" 1/2 drive extensions and a c/v (swivel) to get to the top bellowing bolts. You also have to drop the exhaust so start soaking the bolts at the manifold(s) to downpipe now.
>>
>>13891277
I have a 3 international trucks. One is a 59 b100. Then there's a 62 scout, and a 73 scout. The 62 runs but the driveshafts are bent, the 59 was buried halfway up the door in the woods since the 80s, but has zero rust and still has the original paint. The 73 has the motor out of it, got too many fucking projects for my own good, the where all dads but he's too old so they're mine now
>>
>>13889558
It's got the 4.0 Sohc
with the stupid ass timing chain on the rear. Open should replace since it requires pulling the engine or trans to accomplish.

>>13891199
If 03 still uses the mazda tranny it's internal and you have to pull the trans to replace it anyways.

Yeah, you're good. I would change it, but it doesn't require removing anything related to your job to replace it after if needed as it's bolted to the firewall under the hood.

I run mostly napa parts, have a volvo 850 @180k. An old hilux @270k and a suburban work rig @150k, all run great and have no issues. My favorite of the major parts stores.

Would take Napa over AutoZone. O'Reilly. Carquest any day.
>>
This is making me wonder a few things. Which year of Ranger is easiest to do maintainence on yourself, and is the most dependable in both the tranny and engine? I want a 4x4 Ranger, just not sure which I want.
