this. First and second gen Legacy have pretty much the same drive line. Picked my first gen Legacy for about 500, just needed a new set of tires. Just make sure you get the manual one, the auto is front biased power 90% to the front. more power only gets sent to the back when the front wheels start to lose traction. or if you have money you could get a beetle and swap in a 2.2L NA engine from a Subaru, instantly 4 times the power of the beetle engine, and a lot more if you upgrade internals and turbo

EJ22 boxer, 2.2 litre, 135bhp out the factory. My 1991 liberty has done 411 000km so far, goes pretty well but you would want the AWD

Subaru swap it then. Quite a common swap.
Here's an EJ22 SOHC swap. Even a 140 HP 2.2L will make them go like stink.
