at what point in life is it ok to own a convertible? I need a new daily and was thinking of picking up an E46 but everything nearby is a convertible

when the car was designed from scratch as a convertible and even then I wouldn't get it unless something about it really captivated my attention.
I personally don't like convertibles and I can say that after putting about 20,000km's on my car. There's just not enough times in the year when the weather is perfect for top down driving. It's either too cold, too hot, too humid, or too cloudy with a chance of rain, if you plan on going on the highway, you can't have a conversation with a passenger or hear the radio.
Then the rest of the time you have to deal with the bendy chassis, and all the wind-noise (my car has wind-noise, don't know about other convertibles) and the worst part is that you have to deal with every single jackass that feels it's necessary to talk to you at the lights.
but ya, a convertible E46 is a pretty stupid idea desu.

Just get one with the hardtop.
Convertibles are the epitome of cool

thanks for the input; weather is not an issue here as its usually 90F/32C+ degrees here in California. The car would be a daily, I rarely take passengers anyway but I don't know how I feel about wind noise as I've never been in a convertible

only when you have another regular dd.
I quite like mine. Its not a fast car to begin with, so I don't really care about the performance loss. Wind noise is pretty minimal with the top up and even though its 25 years old and the weather stripping should probably be redone it stays bone dry inside beside for the occasional drip that will fall in where the weather stripping is just completely missing. Not sure what else to say, but like other people have said, don't let what other people think about your car decide what you drive.
