decided to join out school's team this year, suspension and chassis. I'm a pretty useless member of the team at the moment, but it's fun just learning a shitload about vehicle dynamics and hanging out with other people who are interested in cars and wrenching - which seem to be hard to find in university.
>>
I don't want to look it up, give me the quick and dirty list of things that are open/not spec. Can you damp the cars however you want? Different aero it looks like? Can you change anything on the engines?

Suspension lead at Concordia. Definitely don't know enough to be leading yet but I'm doing my best to learn
>>
>tfw FSAE has cost me a semester of uni and a gf
>>
>>13876255
Suspension is pretty open, you can do nearly anything so long as it conforms with packaging rules. Aero is fairly open as well but aero devices can only be placed in certain zones, and must respect size limits. Engine can be up to 600cc but must also run a 20mm diameter restrictor before the throttle body. I think fuel is limited e85 or gas (race gas included).

Kettering University Suspension Team here, also known to some as The Turbo Team.
Pic is our car before Michigan Comp
>>13876255

We have a long rule book, but you can damp the cars however, modify the engine however but it has to be 610cc or less, no chemical FI, and reciprocating piston. There's lots of rules about aero as well. It's very open though because it's a design and race competition
>>
>>13876323
19mm intake restrictor, 610cc, E85, 100, or 93

Mug Nigga, I'm co-leading suspension this year, but next year I'm all on my own
>>
>>13876255
Minimum suspension travel is 1 inch up, 1 inch down beeteedubs, mr. dubs
FSAE is known as being pretty "open" but I gotta say as frame lead, the actual car frames are mostly dictated by the rules.
>>
>>13876299
that looks cool as fuck

weight?
hp?
>>
>>13876347
Ours is a heavy MF at 520lbs

We make about 60hp at the wheels iirc (total of 12% drivetrain loss)
>>
>>13876347
Dunno about his, but I do know our car was the second fastest non-aero car at Lincoln, and I believe one of if not the lightest steel frame car at 342lbs, with 65 rwhp
>>
>>13876337
Yee nice, what school?
>>
>>13876373
Kettering University, formerly known as General Motors Institute. We also use a single cylinder. Car is a rocket ship. What school are you at?
>>
>>13876329
Oh didn't know that, is that new for this year?
>>
>>13876379
Concordia, as stated above haha
>>
>>13876396
The single? Or Kettering? It's been Kettering since the early 90s. We've used a Yamaha WR450 since like 09. We were kinda shit until 2013, then we came 13th overall at Michigan, this year we were 14th overall at Michigan. This was also our first year with a turbo
>>
>>13876401
Ahh didn't know who asked. How'd you guys do at Michigan? And did you go to Lincoln?
>>
>>13876408
Nah, the 610cc and 19mm restrictor rules, could have sworn it was 600cc and 20mm last year
>>
>>13876415
Didn't go to Michigan last year but came 8th in Lincoln . we are going to Michigan this year though so we hope to do well
>>
>>13876431
I'm pretty sure it's 19mm, I know it's more than 600 because University of Wisconsin, Madison runs a 605cc single. When they used to allow Doritos they were limited to 305cc
>>
>>13876434
Nice at Lincoln, we were on track for top 10 finish, but our pullrod ripped out of the control arm.
I would probably see you at Michigan if I was going to be there, I like to go around to different teams and ask about their cars, but I'll be in Germany for both competitions
>>
>>13875135
we here at /o/ don't like autocross - it sucks.

does FSAE hardpark or hit the touge ever? that would be cool.
>>
>>13876499
Have you ever done an AutoX in a race car? Something that has a power to weight ratio on par with a V8 Ariel Atom? If not, then you can't say it sucks

My uni does consistently really well in FSAE, and they're planning to make an electric car next year.

Should I join them, /o/?

I know jack shit about cars (I'm just here for the memes), but I know a fair bit about electrical stuff.
>>
id love to get into FSAE.

i want to build my own 2 seater, McLaren F1 style 3 seater and i want to understand chassis design, not just read instructions from Midlana/Caterham/Exocet.

But i dont go to university, im not a particuarlly clever man.
>>
>>13876690
Salut!

How did you guys do at TO shootout?
>>
>>13876863
Our design is pretty much done, problem is we are waiting on Tubes which is putting us way behind schedule
>>
>>13878284
What school?
>>
>>13878357
Monash Uni, in Ausland.
>>
>>13878359
There are lots of teams starting to get into the E-car. I'd highly recommend doing it because they will teach you almost anything. I have no doubt Monash would make a great E-car. My school barely has the budget for our combustion car, if it wasn't for sponsors, we wouldn't exist.
I've seen your guy's car, and that thing is fast
>>
>>13878366
I think nobody really knows how to do it at the uni, so they're really in the research phase at the moment.

They're setting it up as a summer internship for 3-4 guys to research what stuff they might want to buy and then not actually starting anything until next year.
>>
>>13878370
That's how lots of Teams do it, or they have a 2 year build process where the first year theh only bring it to comp for static events and the next year for dynamic
>>
>>13878333
Not very well. We had 3 new drivers with very little practice time. Towards the end, one of our drivers was starting to get the hang of it and was consistently improving by about 1s each run. We got to about 2s behind the leader, then ran out of time/ had some issues with our car. In the end we placed 4th.

>>
>>13879433
Texas A&M
>>
>>13878673
Same way we passed last year, a turbo does wonders for making the car quieter. >>13878880
Depends on what school, at my school we will take anyone because we have about 10 people who do anything and another 15 that act like they are part of the team but never show up and help.
>>
>>13879422
They make you sumbit a application for a spot on the team?
Thats retarded. Literally anyone who wants to help car is allowed on the team

Oregon State and Ravensburg make GFR, which is pretty much one of the best if not the best team.
>>
>>13879768
They still dominate
>>
>>13879768
Neat. If i have time next year I'd love to try out for the team. Do most teams use ice engines or electric or both? >>13879746
>>
>>13879778
Depends. If they have enough funding some teams will do both combustion and electric. If not most use combustion
>>
I was Chassis & Composites team, lead of composites manufacturing, for the GFR 10 and 11 cars. The chassis was a legacy design with updates. Built four of 'em; two E-cars and two C-cars.

I left the team, even though we ranked #1. Our captains were dishonest and played favorites.
>>
>>13879803
Osu?
>>
>>13879844
GFR is Oregon State and Ravensburg, Germany
>>
>>13879724
They have a big application process at Monash, with interviews and everything.

They also have a minimum requirement of 20 hours per week on the car, meaning it's literally only for people who don't give a shit about their degree.

Bruh. Mondays at 7 Rogers 230. I just started going two weeks ago, everyone's still working on the cad model, there's plenty of grunt work to be done. If you can get in the machine shop, even better. I'm a soph, so I have no clearances or useful knowledge. Feels pretty badman, but I'm starting through the cad tutorials this week.
>>
>>13879724
You must have been on a shitty team.
>>
>>13879771
Oregon State has an FSAE team? When I was doing FSAE, OSU only had a Baja SAE team.

Which is FSAE for idiots.
>>
>>13882445
Yeah, OSU's Baja team is pretty much dead. Our FSAE team is partnered with DHBW Ravensburg, fielding the Global Formula Racing. I haven't kept up with them that much, but the dicks I knew are gone.

>>13879844
Yeah, I still go there. But I'm no longer involved and can't say anything about the current crew. This was my experience from years ago. I did learn some great skills and had some fun though. But, it will take up all your free time and its hard to balance with homework.

Also, "Next drive day is two weeks away" means "Next drive day is two years away". So don't expect to drive a car soon.
>>
>>13879724
Most schools iterate the car each year. At A&M, they treat it as a capstone design course, and the car is scrapped each year. So each year they start from scratch. Being on A&M FSAE means you're King Dick, at least at A&M
>>
>>13881935
How do you find out about UTA's team after graduating? They literally take up half a damn building with their shit, tour guides push it at every school tour they do and have an insane amount of funding (relative to any other organization on campus). You must not have paid attention to anything on campus
