>convert toyota echo to RWD

do i just extend the driveshaft and switch differentials?
>>
what you do is buy a real rwd car
>>
>>13873357
Yes. Exactly. You might want to turn the engine 90* too though.
>>
>>13873364
look, if getting a shaft of metal is cheaper than getting a RWD car, then guess what i'm going to? are you ready? get a shaft of metal.

do you go to the arctic circle when you're out of ice cubes? no. you nut up and fill up that fucking carton.
>>
>>13873357
>do i just extend the driveshaft and switch differentials?
If you're asking this, you do not have the technical or vehicular knowledge to pull this off
>>
>>13873377

Different gearbox, may have to get a new lower end for the engine depending on the configuration, different differentials, make a tunnel for the driveshaft, new brakes, CV-joints and all that comes with it in the back, new suspension

And you'll still not have one of RWD's greatest pros; the good turning radius

can't i switch them? and why a new lower end? you mean a flywheel or some shit?

Does RWD really make a difference in turning radius? I was never aware of that. It does make sense.

Especially if you just start doing donuts. Near zero turning radius.

>4wd donuts
Lolwut?

lolwut? it's like 500 bucks at best. and that's if i get someone else to do it.

you poor deluded man
>>
>>13873411
He could go the transfer case route and have the engine stay lateral, but he'd need to do some serious work to the underneath of the chassis for fitment. He'd also need new engime mounts that will cope with the change in new weight offset. He might honestly need to cut out the passenger footwell to fit the transfer case.

If he changed the engine to longitudinal, new engime mounts are needed, and massive work will have to be done to the fuel lines, electrical looms, coolant hoses, oil pump, and engine management system.

The whole idea is retarded.
>>
>>13873429

Switch them from front to back? Usually different sizes, and chances are you wouldn't be able to find a good way to use the old front ones in the rear because of their design

And the lower end depends a bit on how the engine connects with the gearbox. I've seen engines that wouldn't really fit anything other than the FWD gearbox it came with with, but it all comes down to the individual car, and I don't know anything about the Echo
>>
>>13873456
why the fuck would i need to do any of that longitudinal stuff? isn't that just a matter of extending the fuel lines and cabling? this idea only seems inept becuase most of you seem to be incapable of taking an efficient route with it.
>inb4 it's not an efficient route period

didn't stop hondafags from doing it.
>>
You're probably gonna have to redo the exhaust and rear suspension because they'll likely be in the way. You're going to need to mount the engine 90ยบ so the transmission can sit between it and the drive shaft. In the end, you're going to be left with a 130 HP RWD car that could fall apart at any moment and won't shut the fuck up with warning lights.
>>
>>13873432

The simpler design with no CV-joints makes it so that you can allow the wheels to turn at a greater angle, with the result that a car like my pigfat W202 will handle itself better around a tightly packed parking lot than a Golf would
>>
>>13873463
>didn't stop hondafags from doing it
And Hondafags are all hugely retarded. Your point?
>>
>>13873470
my point is that if they're so retarded and still managed to do it, what does that make you? nihilistic with a wicked sense of humor?
>>
>>13873480
You'd be better off spending the money on lottery tickets. At worst you'd have value in the paper as kindling (honestly worth more than a Honda), at best you'd be rich and be able to afford a real car, unlike the Hondafags.

I used to just be a namefag. And before that, I wuz just Anon. I have just never noticed RWD cars having a better turning radius.

Say you had a BMW 328i and 328xi, would the RWD version turn tighter than the AWD car? I am here to git learned.

>>13873429
You would probably have to mount the engine the other way, right? You might still be able to leave it laterally like that though, they do run 4WD cars with lateral engines. Then cut up the floor for a transmission tunnel, then hope you could tuck a driveshaft in there. Plus at the rear end, I wonder if a diff would even fit under there. And it would take all new suspension.

Does the Echo share a chassis with any other cars? If it shared a chassis with a car that came with AWD, you could grab a donor car that had AWD and use a bunch of that shit. I thought the Corolla might have offered AWD with their "XLE" and "XRS" packages but it looks like those were still FWD.

oh i thought you were trolling

look at this picture, this is a fwd car. those red shafts are what are used to drive the front wheels.

the front wheels can only turn so much before those red suckers dont have enough leverage to turn the front wheels very well. on a RWD car, you aren't limited by those drive shafts so you can have a much tighter turn radius

>>13873463
It sounds like you would be better off going with a mid or rear engine here. Basically flip the entire drivetrain around. Rear wheel steering ftw and just rig up something electrical so you can still have a steering wheel in the front that sends electrical signals to a motor hooked up to the steering box in the rear.

Or keep the regular steering. Wouldn't be as funny and dangerous though.

That's why I said it makes sense. I understand why it would work. I just never noticed a huge difference. I figured it was more limited by the wheel well and hitting suspension parts.

However, like MightyBenz mentioned, my rich friend's Mercs have always had really tight turning radii. His 2007 C280 was RWD so that makes sense, but the 2011 C300 and 2014 E350 both had the 4matic AWD and still had a really tight turning radius.

You're going to have to spend far more than the car is worth to do that
>>
>>13873357
You're gonna have to cut a hole in the front so the engine fits longitudinally and you're going to have to cut a hole in the bottom down the middle so you have a place for the transmission and drive shaft to go.
>>
>>13873648
i don't have the knowledge nor the means, but you know what i do have? a big heard, and that should count for something dammit.

I'll bite.
As others have said, the engine in the echo is transversely mounted. Therefore, you can't run a prop shaft to a differential in the rear wheels. You would need to either use the front differential for a clusterfuck of a drivetrain or turn the entire thing 90 degrees, new longitudinal transmission, and a differential at the rear. Just buy a miata off craigslist. Any miata, it'll be cheaper than what you're trying to do and better.

If you do want to convert FWD into RWD, your best bet is a car with a longitudinally mounted engine and transmission. Very few cars are FWD and have a longitudinally mounted engine, only the B5 Passat & audi A4's come to mind. And they do this by putting the engine in front of the front axle, so you'll still understeer under most circumstances.

Just go find a wrecked/junkyard frs/brz, should plenty of them out there since unskilled stancefags love to wrap them around trees. Rip out powertrain and swap into your echo. Then cut your custom drive shaft & you 90% done with your project
