Hey aut/o/ists, taking a trip to Portland in my newly acquired 850 Turbo for fun and parts. I need new parts plus used scrapyard parts and was curious if anyone knew of any places like IPD or of volvo specific scrapyards in Oregon, or just your favorite auto part stores so i can go beg for stickers.

Also General Volvo/SAAB thread, post your fall/winter holiday drive plans

OP here. I need a lot of parts; this is just a partial list/general synopsis of stuff i can't easily get shipped cheaply to where i live. Also i'm coming from CA so anything along the 101 or I-5 is game.
>inb4 even Medford?

Badly need: (mostly IPD stuff i reckon)
*URO brand dipstick tube
*turbo bpv diaphragm
*grill clips
*OEM oil filters
*crush washers for oil and trans sump plug bolts
*rear brake clips

Would be nice:
*OE luggage rack
*underbody fuel line housing
*Fiberglass headlight support
*passenger side door spring assembly
*two cheap nice tires (like yokohamas from a scrapyard lel)
*new clips for oil/atf cooler lines
*bumper grill inserts
*cool AF stickers
*cheap shock/strut set? (found a killer deal on amazon and i don't think i'll beat it, but hey)

I was just about to start a thread myself. I still can't figure out what the issue is with my parking brake. I have I narrowed down to the cable or the actuator but either way it doesn't explain why it won't let the brake retract all the way. As for electrics, my high beams don't work (don't know why) and the central locking doesn't work (although whenever I push down on the driver's lock they all move a little and the relays click). The rust is concerning too. On a more positive note I finally reattached the shift boot after destroying my fingers for an hour. So worth it though

>>13869933
Those are pretty obscure things but I'd reckon ipd has the grill clips, oil filters, brake parts, and depending on your idea of cheap, struts.

Didn't see grill clips on IPDs website, but if anything i can get some from a salvage yard; i'd just rather have new. I'd like to get a set of 850r struts from a scrapyard as well, but i have my doubts about quality after 20 years of hooning.

>Prking brake ancedote, launch!
The cable on my Nissan D21 got chewed up by the housing and physically jammed inside so that it would never engage. I'd start with the cable.

>Highbeams don't work
Have you checked the fuse/relay? also inspect the plugs and wires, make sure they're plugged in correctly and in good shape.

240 owner here, just did front struts on it and have some concerns. The car is much stiffer and goes over bumps nice and smooth but it's all over the road in a way.

I know it needs an alignment and plan on getting one done tomorrow but I'm worried I may have fucked something up.

basically the kinda wonders, when I turn it right it sometimes gets set into going straight then back to right for a split second and feels a little loose.

should I just chill out and get it aligned and see after that? I just don't want to get an alignment only to have shit broken repair it and have to get another alignment.

I don't think I fucked anything up really, only thing I could think of are the sway bar end links and bushings as they are beat to fuck and I had to torch one of the nuts holding down the bushing causing the bushing to light on fire briefly.
>>
>>13870006
Clean your fuse box, they're prone to wear and being beat up in 240's. could be your problem for a lot of that stuff, just take out the fuses and clean the connections in the box nice and good so you know you have connection.

Other than that check the bulbs (I assume you already did that but you never know) relay, fuse etc.

I believe the locking system has 2 relays, I may be wrong on that but you might be hearing one click while the other is toast. They're pretty easy to access so just give them a check.

how do the ball joints look? if they have excessive play (they should be nice and stiff) the car will steer poorly, especially over bumpy roads. When the car is parked, grab the tire at 3 and 9 o' clock and try to wiggle it back and forth. it shouldn't move or make any noise AT ALL. I'd do the ball joints before you get an alignment.

>tfw late model 850s have integrated ball joint/control arm assemblies
>>
>>13871532
Honestly they seemed pretty bad. When I had only them connected to the strut housing I could easily move the strut assembly around with them as a pivot.

I felt they seemed to playful as well but I replaced them relatively recently.

Maybe my ancient struts and all around poor suspension was too hard on them.

Will look into replacing them, easy repair and don't really need to do an alignment afterwards.

Its the wiring harness for the drivers front door lock and lock actuator. Pop of the door panel and you'll see right away what's going on. The coating on the wires falls apart where they bend. Disconnect everything, take the harness and cut each wire, slip over several pieces of heat-shrink, solder the wires back together, use a heat gun and heatshrink over the exposed wiring then re-install. Its a pretty easy job.

Summoned! Some were missing when I got the car and some were stating to come off so I just ripped the rest of. I've been planning to pain the car for a while so I said fuck it. My rockers already have rust holes the size of a quarter on either side too.

The most important thing is to keep your rockers free of debris. I blew mine out with compressed air and there was a shit ton of organic matter in there. That's what causes the rust the most. You can pop the trim off for access to the large plugs on the inboard part of the rocker to see what's going on in there and to clear the debris. Use those holes and the cowl vents to blow air down through the rocker.

I also have several large rust holes in my floor pants, front and rear. Nothing that's structural or to the point where I could put a foot through or anything. I've been contemplating different methods of patching them for a while now. I have cut panels from another one that I scrapped, but I don't want to go that route since its time and labor intensive and this is my DD. I have decided to go with fiberglass patching using this product.
https://mercedessource.com/store/miracle-paint-underbody-complete-sheetmetal-rust-repair-kit-extras

I already ordered it and plan on doing the repair over Thanksgiving weekend.

As for the trim holes, I'm going to use a fiberglass infused bondo to plug them up and smooth them over and then prime for paint.

Fellow whiteblock bro

You can get a diaphragm cheaper an upgrade isn't needed until higher boost.

http://m.ebay.com/itm/Turbo-BOV-Bypass-Repair-Kit-VOLVO-TD04HL-15G-16T-19T-/381460263514?nav=SEARCH

Also get a new tcv, skip the tuner parts and get an pierburg for a v70 from fcp
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-boost-pressure-valve-solenoid-valve-30670448

Then get a adjustable wastegate from Ard

http://www.ardideas.com/ARD-Adjustable-Wastegate-actuator-_p_120.html

Common issue is also the hose from the fuel pump to the module leaking lowering fuel pressure. Can diy with some high pressure fuel line and clamps.

Then get some reman R injectors from rockauto and you have 250hp. You could throw a tune and exhaust on it to push 300 or close to but I'd be weary of burning up the a/t.

Volvo 740 owner here.

Plans for this winter are a pair of fog lights and a pair of long range lights.
The headliht protection bit that's missing is also on it's way, it sucks to find parts for these cars in France

I have a concern, on idle it seems to shake a bit, maybe one valve has not the proper 'free moving space' (you know, that 0.2 mm between the cam and the valve, forgive my broken english) and I need to check it out because it has some trouble to cold start.
>>
Just got in from washing my 1st gen S40, happy to see a thread up. Once this car eventually gives out, I'm hoping to get a sexy 240 wagon to turn into sweet camping wagon.

Might be a valve issue, the cam original cam bushings on the 740 are sheet metal that's been soldered so if that's cracked or warped you might have some wiggle in the valve.

>>

In all fairness it isn't that unusual to make the bushings that way the real problem is that the damn cars keep going for far longer than the engineers expected ;)

if you remove the oilpan and look at the cam check to see if the wear on the lifters are uneven, if so you'll either have to tear down the engine to change the bushings and valves (hopefully not the cam) or just fuck it and keep trucking and buy another engine if it falls apart.

Don't have a pic of the B230 but the setup is basically the same, you'll need a snake camera to actually see properly but you can inspect the cam with a little effort.
>>
http://i49.tinypic.com/2jwp7c.jpg
There's a B230 and you can see the cam quite clearly, but if you want to inspect it without removing the engine you'll need a camera to see, preferably a bore cam or fiberoptic like the ones they use to check pipes.
>>
>>13874333
Real question here, what would you do with the windows if you slept in a car like that? I feel like leaving them open would subject you to predators and bugs, but that leaving them closed would result in everything getting fogged up and you running out of air. What is the right way to do this?
>>
>>13874570

Maybe put some of that adhesive velcro mosqito net stuff over one of the back windows so you can crank it down but still keep the bugs out.
>>
>>13874406
That isn't a cam that's a crankshaft..

To look at the cam you remove the valve cover.
>>
>>13874590

The cam is sitting to the left on the picture.
to check the cam from the top you'll need to remove the top and the lifters.
>>
>>13874570
Just crack them? You could rig a screen to a window too if you wanted. As long as you don't eat in or around your car it shouldn't be an issue

if you crack all your windows slightly you won't fog up, and if your window is only held by three sides instead of rolled up all the way it is stronger; it has more flex and is harder to break.

Also you're in a vehicle, so you just drive away? Or call the cops? Cops will usually overlook u being homeless if you're being threatened and have to call them to your camp-spot.

Woooooooow. How much meth money do you think that generates?

The closest pull-apart style yards to me are 100 miles away for the worst pick-n-pull i've ever personally seen or 200 miles away for a bunch of terrible salvage yards. I was already going to Portland anyway tho, otherwise i'd just order from IPD online, search rockauto for the other parts, and buy tires with tax.
