Ive had several rx7s as well and loved them to death. Thought the miata would be similar. It's not.

No ABS, traction, and no good crash protection. Also, a lot of people don't say this, but if the ground is wet and you go a little above speed limit on a corner, you will die. The 185 stock tires aren't good. When people say "they're fun track cars!" they mean it, and I'd recommend you get one as a toy solely-nothing else.

ive owned a miata for a few months now, the power is lacking, but the grip levels even in stock form is pretty impressive, if I slow down before a corner and then floor it the entire way round when it reaches its limit it does a balance between oversteer and understeer, eventually a bit more understeer which may surprise people, I think the suspension is stiffer at the front stock to make it less likely to oversteer, I think changing the suspension for some nice coil overs, adding a good LSD and adding some high compression pistons, up rated con-rods, ITB's and an ECU mod will make this car pretty much perfect for racing around the road when its safe to do so, and a riot on the track. engine swap = has to be a lightweight engine or else moron. forced induction = no cus' adds weight and reduces controllability, unless moron. moron = someone who ruins the almost perfect weight distribution.

adding a turbo wouldn't ruin the weight distribution but it would upset it somewhat at least slightly. Because turbos require exhaust gasses to operate, depending on the size of turbo varies the amount of exhaust gasses needed to spin the turbo to an optimum speed for it to create boost rather than just restricting the engines ability to breathe.

Turbos create power spikes, when they suddenly get to the point where they provide substantial boost, variable turbos and twin turbos of different sizes can solve this issue, but adds weight and reduces reliability.

In a lightweight car like an MX5 your better off going for quick engine response and lower weight, for the price of a decent turbo unit you could get some high compression pistons and light weight con-rods which would increase the power by about 60-80 BHP. Being smart you would then spend other money on coil overs, uprated clutch, limited-slip diff and some decent tires, but don't forget to upgrade the brakes.

this car is about handling, if you want straight line speed you should either learn to drive properly or get a different car.
