I was going through old photos on my computer, and stumbled across this. It looks like a tesla roadster, but the rear ends don't fit the profile too much.

Then they had to make it more available, faster, comfortable, and an overall better car, the Model S. So now that they've learned how to make a quality car, and they've gotten into people's heads that electric cars are good and fast, they're gonna make a mass market, affordable car for everyone
They didn't seek to make a fast car with the roadster, or even a good car. They just needed to make a car that got people's attention, looked good, and made people see it on magazine covers going "that's an electric car...?" And it worked. It was marketing
