The wives of the old farts wanted to get involved in their husband's car hobby, but they don't actually want to get involved with the car. So they started making these dolls, and dressing them up, and making their clothes.

The husbands, wanting their wife to feel involved in their hobby, agreed to let the wife bring the dolls to the car show. One wife started it, and then all the other women started to copy it. At some point, even the men started doing it. Why? Because much like stance, if you want to fit in and be accepted, you have to tow the line and do the same thing everyone else is doing.
