One guy need it for like 2k, but he got a friend to do the mounts. If you csn do thr mounts custom it isnt much more expensive than the engine. He used a T2 engine i believe though. A t2 engine can still make more than enough power for a Miata with almost no money put into it. Or you could use the Cosmo two rotor (13b re), but you would need to retain the Miata transmission.

It's a nice little handling-focused car. For mega-cheap you get an extremely lightweight car that's incredibly well-balanced front-to-back with double-wishbone suspension on all four corners, and an incredible aftermarket. Just like how you go for a foxbody Mustang for straight-line, you go for a Miata for handling, it's a lot of performance and potential in its respective aspect for very cheap.

With a kit, you don't really have to know shit.
Without a kit, you should know how to tig weld, design mounts, and be comfortable with reading wiring and pin diagrams and altering them.

It's just a lot of work and a lot of time to do it right.

If anyone is interested in a hardcore swap there's a guy on bmw2002faq who put a 1.9 TDI in a bmw 2002. He's an engineer at Kia and used a 3d scanning tool to completely scan the rear subframe it's pretty bad ass.

That's the only thing I don't like about the car. I hate that I'm pushing 3k rpm at highway speeds. The interstate scares the hell out of me, being at 5k for extended periods of time, while the car shakes and the wind howls. My hardtop is 11 lbs. Treasure coast miata makes them. With the Lexan rear window it's maybe 14. But it's still way lighter than the soft top and if your going to be an ass about a few pounds difference on the hardtop then maybe you should become an IRS inspector or something.

I have a base NA, 1996. No power windows, door locks or A/C. Probably an open dif, haven't really tested it, and I've never owned or pushed a car with any type of locking dif (besides semi trucks, because that's totally the same).

According to everything I can find the last years were the heaviest of the NAs, however the 96 was still lighter than any NB, and lighter than the 97 NA. We're talking weight changes of 50-90lbs, though.

Fun fact, the '96 has the highest ride height of any Miata ever made. I kinda like it.

I really love my car. If I had to get another Miata I might look at a 95, if only because it's OBD-1 and you only have to pass a sniff-test for DEQ shit, no plug-in required.

Dunno, probably just options. I was reading up on it, and the 97 had some extra padding in the doors, so maybe there was some more sound deadening which could feasibly add 10lbs or so. The curb weights of all 1.8s are listed at 2100lbs, but the official Mazda numbers I found off a miata.net thread list them as :

I'd take it with a grain of salt given where I found it, but it sounds reasonable. Regardless of which one you choose, they're all going to be pretty damn light. Just because a 97 is 66lbs heavier than a 94, doesn't mean it's going to be preforming worse. Mazda played with shit on the car to make it better literally every single year they made the NA, hence weird shit like all the ride heights being different. Keep in mind these cars were also made at the onset of heavy computerization, the OBD-II standard, standard airbags, etc.

TL;DR they're all pretty fucking light and you probably won't notice any difference between them (weight-wise) unless you've driven hundred of them and you race semi-professionally.

Oh yeah, I dunno about '92, but I remember now that Mazda did add one or two bars to the '93 model to stiffen it up a bit. It might've started in '92. It didn't exactly address the chassis flex issue, but it did help a little bit for most. I wouldn't think that would add much more weight though.

There are more Miatas in an Auto X lineup than any other car. The drivers are not that good and always have Go Pro's on them.

I actually played the new Forza game at a Gamestop with a Miata, got second place because of forcing the "Honnnnnn" on the turns but lost to some smaller european car.

It's an easy car but the owners are dumb enough to never master it, and they still think it's the best they have and ever will.

That's more than enough to drift. It's faster and has more power than most of the 70s, 80s and 90s rwd shitboxes and people drift those all the time. With a clutch type LSD it should drift real good, even stock.
